Plus some of the other categories are interesting as well. I'm wondering if it's worth participating, it's Turku we're talking about after all..

well, cultural organisations giving out money because they want to support things is not that much buying the demoscene as corporations giving out hardware because they want us to buy more of their hardware...

Gargaj: Event Awards. I guess you could make something demolike for the other categories as well.

it's a bit confusing though, first i thought the Open category is the only one that seems to fit...

Excellent news. Nice to hear that digital art is gaining more widespread acceptance in the "art community" (if it can be called such), as well as on a national level in Finland :-)

It seems that most categories are "web based", with few exceptions.

one thing puzzles me and i know it's pretty inane so enlighten me - does this mean that you can win these prizes through the ASM/Alt compos?

(the question is/seems redundant but i admit it isnt really clear for me)

Gargaj: It would appear that you do not have to make something exclusively for this "compo" to be considered, you can enter previously made material (though it has to be made this year). So in essence it is like very specialiced film-festival.. something :)

Hello!

As it seems this post has spawned some discussion, i want to cler some things out and answer to seme questions.
I work at the Turku 2011-foundation (or actually i'm serving my non-military service here) and at the live 2011 -department.

About the term "web-based" it mostly means that all the material will be published in some form in the net. Most likely most of the material will be just converted to videos and published as an flv video.
We do anyways encourage people to think demos compatible straight to web browsers, such as java, actionscript or processing etc. applets.

Now about the demos, the open and the digital turku are purely animation compos, no matter how you do it. So it might be live action footage tampered with stunning cg effects or it might be totally realtime demo or it might be 1200% pre-rendered 3d.. If it's movin images and it's adequately digital, it'll do.

The event compos will be announced later. They depend on what would be appropriate to each event, which is being discussed with altparty and assembly.

And yes, no work submitted to us is going to be owned by us, you'll be free to submit them to othes compos too ;)

The more detailed info on all categories will be released at the end of march.

What comes to buying the demoscene etc. don't worry, there's no agenda such as that. The grand prix is mainly about SUPPORTING the demoscene and giving it some credit as a bigger organization. We want to kind of recognize the demoscene as an art community. Of course we have also some our intrests to enliven the forecoming live 2011 website with the material through this competition.
In any ways it's not about commercializing or robbing or trying to own the demoscene.

Believe me, i'm an 3d graphic artist myself, and wouldn't say this if i weren't behind this.
