Windows 7

category: general [glöplog]
That test says nothing - how were each system configured? Which optimisations were done? Any massive service shutdowns in any of the systems in order to improve performance? Etc.
Intrinsic: Directory opus is awesome!!!
Thank fuck microsoft finally are doing some work on their UI, work that amounts to more than just making it transparent. I can finally re-order my task bar. Also the way windows automatically stick to the edges of the screen for easy arrangement is great. Notification area icons are gone (albeit into a little pop-up box) and I now have a "library" for my documents and pictures that I can add my own folders to.

All that shit is good, but I know it's all shell, and I'm not paying megabucks for a new shell.

Jcl, don't worry you're not alone :)

I haven't had any bigger problems with it and it seems more fluent to use than XP. And if MS is able to make Win7 even better then my expectations are starting to get (unrealistically) high.

psonice: that win-key + typing works better in vista since it starts to type into search box which will properly look through programs and documents.

pommak: sounds like a perfect mix then. All I need is vista installing everywhere... which would mean upgrading 75% of the pcs at work and an extra gig or 2 of ram in my own machines (they're already at their limit unfortunately :( )

Can anyone confirm if the win 7 betas are less resource hungry? Microsoft were suggesting it'd run on lower end hardware than vista, so is it usable with 1gb of ram and a low spec video card?

/me confirms.
sempron 1,83ghz
256mb (!) of ram (modified install, requires 512mb to install like vista)
geforce 4 mx 128mb (no comment, i know :D )
works.
works even better and faster than xp that i have installed on another partition.

damn, even all those 256b intros are working just like under xp.

ps. i've had some driver hell, nvidia isn't working perfectly - i'm using xp drivers, 3d acceleration works, but some stuff isn't working - media center, even minesweeper, are causing system hang, but for example dungeon siege (yeah, that old hack&slash), or even binaryflow, are working perfectly (despite the fact that windows says that dungeon siege is not compatible).

overall, i guess it's perfect even for less powerfull hardware, as long as it's more or less new = has drivers for vista. otherwise, you'll have some fun ;)

and since it works fine here on 256mb, i guess 1gb is more than enough for it. of course, more == better, but it's really fast overall anyway. certainly better than vista.

Fuck Vista. If you're able to find >5Gb of installation amusable and the fact that the whole crap take about 1.4 GB of RAM after starting you're welcome to the world of morons.

Oh. So you live there too? ;P

Nah. XP for me.
Windows 7 looks nice, but they still have about 8 month to spoil it till it comes out... So let's see then.

mmm...

Windows XP is still the better, IMHO.

Windows Vista has sucked really hard.

Let's see now this Windows 7...

You all can go use MS-DOS on your 386's... it only takes up 500kb of RAM!

Windows 7 seems to has teh DRM cancer as well as other shit: http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/16/2259257&from=rss

How is Photoshop related to Windows 7 support of DRM is beyond me...

How is the new audio driver model and driver providers not supporting an output mixer (not Microsoft, but the audio driver provider) related to Windows 7 and support of DRM is well beyond me (some soundcards do support an output mixing device in the new audio driver model, btw).

The Windows 7 slashdot's FUD-spreading (like happened with Vista 2 years ago, and with XP 9 years ago) has begun! :)
