Windows 7

second 'system tray' = 'quick launch bar'
speaking of UI ...
Launchy for the win (pun intended)
standard windows UI is shit with bad usability (and the usual habbit of software vendors to create a bunch of folders in the Start menu is not helping either!)
also total commander for file managing and quick-launch icons

i want non-png-based winXP style taskbar with win7 functionality!
also, i concluded that the startmenu is obsolete. (startkiller took care of that)
and i put al the desktop-icons in quicklaunch, and made it the whole screen wide, with an extra row for the taskbar.
also nexusfile > total commander >>> windows explorer
and you need faststone image viewer

Install windows XP. Disable all graphical faggotery, install Launchy. Use a Windows 95 style theme. Install Opera.
...install Visual Studio and code a decent calculator for Launchy.
...while you're at it a python interpreter.
Directory Opus > than all that shit you mentioned. IrfanView is all you need for images, clean lean and efficient.
And i hope w7 has a classic look, i really don't care for all that flashy shit that just eats up resources and slows things up. If i press a button i want something to happen immediatelly without some stupid swoopy shitty ponsy animation.

pete: if you use osx a bit, you notice that identifying the running apps is actually pretty useful. Now and then you need that extra bit of memory, and it's good to quickly see what you can get rid of. Apart from that though, I agree.
Leads me to another point though: the task switcher in osx rules hugely. Ok, there's some stuff possibly missing, but the thing i really love about it: alt-tab to bring up the app switching thing (much like windows), tab along to select an app.. press Q to instantly quit that app, or H to hide it. Soooo much faster when you want to close a load of crap!
Also, what intrinsic said about dopus. It ruled on amiga, it's still great now on pc. Osx port needed fast :)

PERFUME PONCE
I've been doing some minor testing in virtual machines with the latest build. I am about to split off about 100GB of my 640GB drive and do a full native install on my fastest box as well as natively install on a 4 year old IBM Thinkcentre P4 2.4ghz desktop and see how things go between these two. Should be interesting. This of course reminds me that I need to install a DVD drive in the Thinkcentre.
ngfyler: Very interesting...
i'm going to give it a try when my netbook comes back from the repair center.
whynot2000: nexusfile will take a look at it. Thanks.
on osx there are some really crappy dualpane filemanagers. muCommander is the best, but there is still a long way to go to reach dopus/total commander or even old norton commander.

blackbox for windows <3
if you like the minimalistic & fast stuff
thx for the input!
Psonice: don't do
win+r, appname.
Just hit
win, then start typing the appname.
See? Wasn't that easy?
...
Wait, come back! Oh no, you've gone to camp out overnight to be the first to get a macbook wheel

gb: good tip! Seems to only work if the app is directly visible in the start menu unfortunately, so it's a bit half baked. I could fix that on my own machine with a bigger start menu, but that would just annoy me when I'm working on other boxes and keep trying it :)
oh, i meant: i want non-png-based win98se style taskbar with win7 functionality!
XP is allready png...
XP is allready png...
nuff said!
and that means...?
dont play crysis!
higher is better!! :D
psonice: I had enough crap in my start menu that I ran out of space. Just make subfolders and organise, it'll still find things.
