file_id.diz
category: general [glöplog]
How come people still haven't figured out how to make proper file_id.diz's? I mean.. The standard has said 44x11 characters for how many years now? Want more? Use an nfo!
And,.. What ISO/IEC number does the file_id.diz standard have?
Merry Christmas :)
Merry Christmas :)
I still haven't figured out why some people still care about file_id.diz at all.
That's true, as there's no real point in it any more. But if you do add one..
i always make sure mine are 45x12, just to annoy arcane.
Probably most people don't know that there is a standard for file_id.diz (I also didn't know it's limited to 11 lines, I only thought the width was limited to 40 characters per line).
So. Uhm. Why is it 44x11 anyway??!
http://www.textfiles.com/computers/fileid.txt
Quote:
The file consists of straight ASCII text, up to 10 lines of text, each line
being no more than 45 characters long. It should *NOT* contain any blank
lines, any form of centering or formatting, or any Hi-ASCII or ANSI
characters. (i.e. it should ONLY contain alpha & numeric characters).
arcane: Øl i Oslo i romjula?
No formatting? That also means one shouldn't rely on fixed width spaces? But ASCII drawings require them.
There are still good reasons to use file_id.diz and it should be mandatory for all kind of releases.

That HiAscii thing is something every file_id.diz in recorded history has violated :)

@Raredolf: It's the standard used for dirlistings on BBSs, hence the format.

because no-one uses bbs anymore? O_o
file_id.diz, what they said.
@bk237: Then people shouldn't use file_id.diz's either.. It's just like splitting releases into 1.44MB zip-files, *cough* 0day *cough*.
just copy a random pr0n-jpeg to file_id.diz and be done with it already
