scene.org awards 2008 - your nominations
category: general [glöplog]
leijaa: I've already discussed it with gargaj. I also sent a message to scene.org in post BP feedback form (I guess it was 3 years ago) about it. In my opinion jury composed only from sceners is a bad idea. We are all floating in our own sauce which prevents any evolution at all. Most of the big festivals change the jury every year (maybe the biggest exception are oscars). Next they are organizing the jury to have a counterweighted members. What I was trying to propose is to involve someone from other area of digital creativity. A person from vfx could decide about graphics and wild, someone from gamedev could decide about technical aspects. The same goes for music etc. On one hand we are trying to do an outreach. On the other we are sticking with what I call "The scenebook of morality". The best example is "Suicide Barbie" last year.
I admit that I used to harsh words in my previous post. I wanted to say that I totally disrespect juries votings. On the contrary the whole awards giving ceremony is important because it acts like a magnet to newcomers.
Also there should be the special award for outreach or preservation achievements. I guess scamp and temis or the whole US outreach team would be a good candidates.
Hyde: no worries, I don't have nothing against you and never will have. We already met and I know that you together with Archmage are really nice guys. It's only Keops pinching us from the start. It's not hard to read between his lines. smash is the only one except us who overused SSAO and DOF in the past times. There are only Keyboarders with "texas" and Playpsyco who also uses that techniques but I asume they were not the main target of his accuses. And I don't know what you are all worry about. It's teh internet and everyone wins.

but we did ssao with a rulz0r trick for more visual pleasure!
Bonzaj : reread my post, I simply wrote that I was not impressed by DOF and SSAO in 2008, especially with the dozens of paper dealing with it, end of story. Live with it.
Every single game running on 360/PS3 (having a GPU equivalent to a GeForce 7xxx) have that or similar techniques, so no, sorry again, I fail to be impressed and I don't call that a technical achievement on a 8800 when the GPU does only that with a few objects on screen.

Quisten : that was exactly my point :D
Considering the scene.org awards appear to have sponsors it would be nice if that cash was used to buy in a broader jury, I support that idea. Bring in Kevin Mack.
Bring in Quentin Tarantino and Sean Penn. I want more political demos.
Hmm.
"buy in"? o_O
People from video effects and gaming industries won't come out and judge a competition without charging a fee. Unless they're friends of the scene.
I support a broader jury with some people from outside the scene as well as sceners. I don't see how that would be possible without some money, and I know that sucks.

that sounds 200% different than a certain earlier statement in which you told us that you "disrespect the jury"
are you toning it down now because of the reactions or is it just high time to learn a thing or 2 about the fucking language we're using here?
Bonjaz: You may have discussed it with Gargaj, but as he is not a member of the awards organizing team, discussing it with me (project manager) directly might be a better solution :)
Apart from that, the awards organizing team has already discussed having outsiders in our jury several times, the only problem is; the outsiders don't seem to be as enthusiastic as we are about it. Feel free to suggest people we can ask.

Oh damn, where did that name come from :D
I meant bonzaj, obviously, yes I can write it :)

Timbaland could judge best soundtrack.
bonzaj's idea is excellent imho :)
it would be great to see expert people invited into scene awards jury from 'cousin' communities like gamedev, game industry, cg world, cgsociety, pixeljoint, processing, cinema (like superstar Uwe Boll) mainstream music producers (like finest french rap producers at Main), graffiti artists...

I hope you're joking about Uwe Boll.
actually no, his seminar at breakpoint 07 was really enjoyable, he's obviously smart and tongue-in-cheek, he does know a lot about cinema, and he's an internet star for having slaughtered so many game licenses :D

If the seminar thought us one thing it was that he is indeed clever, but he is bat-shit insane :)
!
Uwe Boll is the supertroll of Hollywood, he beats all the actresses on the attention-whorehood scale!
concerning the composition of juries, i think it's a good idea to look at how the most famous awards organisation on our planet deals with this issue.
from oscars.org:
actually, the only examples of art competitions with hired high profile jury members i can think of are semi-commercial televised/sponsored bullshit shows like idols, xfactor, dancing with the stars and so on... it would most definitely be entertaining to see scene.org awards move in this direction, but i'm not sure if that should be the main purpose of the event.
from oscars.org:
Quote:
The question, "Who gets the Oscar?," is decided by a true jury of peers.
Quote:
Voting on all achievements shall be restricted to active and life Academy members.

dancing with the stars meets the bp demo compo - now there's a concept.
with weekly 4k face-offs?
rob is jarig ftw \o/
I honestly think celebrity juries are out of the question. A jury made up of representatives from last years winners would be best.
