About IQ tests, I use to say this:

Getting extremely high results in IQ tests doesn't make you a genius. By other hand, genious use to be able to do very good IQ tests: they are genious and can do a lot of mental things very good.

I am an ex-Mensa member, and I've known a lot of good iq tests solvers. For the most of them, their ability to solve iq tests was their most notable ability.

What Stephen Murdoch said is rubbish. The Nazis did sterilize people who they believed had low intelligence. The standard question at court was: "Please form a sensible sentence containing the words hare, hunter, countryside." (German: Hase, Jäger, Feld.) If the tested person was not able to fulfil this task, he/she would be sterilized. But that was not an IQ test.

At Mensa there are members from all layers of society. IQ alone is not enough; to achieve something great, you also need strong curiosity, ability to focus on a problem until it is finally solved, diligence, persistence, creativity and probably also some other traits which I forgot.

Once I proposed in the Mensa forum to work together on the question whether P = NP. The only reply I got was: "Many great minds have already worked on this problem and failed, so it makes no sense that we do it." That's definitely not the attitude to achieve something great.

Yes of course the skills involved in an IQ test (logical thinking, maths, reading comprehension etc.) can be trained!

For me, intelligence is an attribute much like physical strength. How much you can achieve is dependent on how much you train, but some of it is also up to your genetic heritage.
An IQ test can then be compared to a specific strength test, for example bench press. But being able to bench press a lot doesn't necessarily mean that you have strong legs etc.
Still, if you want to hire someone to lift heavy things, and you see that applicant A can bench press 300 pounds and applicant B only manages a 100, you can make the assumption that in general strength-related tasks, applicant A will probably do better. Now you make this assumption even though you do not have any data on how strong legs applicant A has, so in some rare case it might turn out that he has real chicken-legs and can't lift much at all!
But still, if you were to make an educated guess on who to hire, I'm guessing that most would agree that applicant A has a higher probability of being the better choice.

It depends, of course on the aim of the executer of the test.

Like in so many so called scientific studies. And if the result does not match the wanted theory (oh sorry, eternal truth that is, we are talking about science, right?), new tests are necessary.

In the end the truth has to be found.
