A bit offtopic about Timbaland
category: general [glöplog]
When you shown the Timbaland thing, I had no idea of who Timbaland was, but since then, the name Timbaland was related to me to "ripper" and "bad composer".
Then I saw in youtube this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePyRrb2-fzs
(Apologize by Timbaland)
Then I thought, fuck, I like so so much the song... maybe Timbaland is not that bad as I thought... maybe even he is a good composer...
Finally, I found the original song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm0T7_SGee4
And, to my surprise, Timbaland did mostly nothing to the original song!? WTF. So, you add some "eh, eh" to a song and you get much more famous for the "remix" than the original composers!? WTF. People like Timbaland should be dead.

well he made you find the song. and yes, it's great.
you've hit it!
..but i dont think that One Republic complains .. because they had that number on his album they have become one of the biggest new names. But yes, the more you read about him, the more pathetic he seems to get.
Try searching for timbaland and iran on youtube .. he has been "sampling" for a very long time it seems..

i really don't see the problem. in full agreement, timba turned their song into a big hit, and deservedly so. i do like timba's version better, despite the fact that the differences are just small - the song has more punch, somehow builds up to more emotion, and has no horrible guitar riff. demanding someone's death because he re-engineered a song with full credit to turn it into a world wide hit record is, to me, way over the top.
i fucking hate that song. horrible whiney singing, terrible tune.
i also fucking hate that song
but timbaland has produced some pretty cool rap & rnb hits during the last ~15 years

Well, this is just the way that business works, apparently. Or any business, for that matter.
I mean... you got a good product, but no real market for it. What do you do? You get a famous institution to endorse it! In this case, Timbaland (and probably most producers out there) is happy to do it, because a) it endorses himself, b) it increases the lifespan of his bankaccount with minimal effort and c) "SEE MEE IN ANOTHER VIDEO, MOMMY!!!!".
It's a no-brainer, really. You're just sorry you wasn't given this opportunity.

Oh, and so many tunes only need a little of this and a dash of that to become better songs. It's what great producers/mixers do, really. Also, seen from the artist's point of view, I'm pretty sure that keeping close to the original is the preferable way to go.
what xeron said. this is just a mainstream song like 1000 others.
Great business model - find some good tune that hasn't become wellknown to the general public, "remix" it a bit, use your marketing muscle to make people buy it, and if someone dares "stealing" it from you by downloading it for free, sue their ass off.
Do you really like this song?
wat?
wat?
If you really think this is a great song you deserve to be fucked by timbaland and his record label.
I think Timbaland really added something to Apologize, since the original version sounds very dry and dull, while the Timbaland version is more fluid and "thicker" in its sound.
Melody isn't everything. It also needs a good arrangement of the instruments to make a track really sound good.
Another good example of this effect are those tracks, that only work when played live but not as studio recording or those, that only works as studio recording and not when played live on stage.

i'm pretty sure everything you said above is the work of a studio engineer
yeah, should every studio engineer take the credit of the original song ?
Every Timbaland thread should have a link to Scott Storch's Built Like Dat Timbaland diss video!

This video is not available in your country.
Wtf? When did YouTube start caring about where I access it from?!

I think, in this case, it is even worse. The studio engineer took the most of the credit. Just take a look of the title:
Timbaland - Apologize (feat. One Republic)
I believe it should be:
One Republic - Apologize (Timbaland remastering)
I also recently noticed that all Aphex Twin's songs on his "26 Mixes for Cash" album are total ripoffs from other artists. People like Aphex Twin should be dead.
Yeah, and every artist and band who does coversongs should be dead!
But you don't get it! Timbaland made them famous and gave them credit for the song! He should rot and burn in hell.
It's a shit song though (both versions)

this thread just tastes wrong. it needs more bass.
Real story:
Eminem heard Dido's song 'Thank you' and really liked it. He sampled it without her permission for the song 'Stan' and just sent her a note saying "sup bitch, I sampled your song because it's awesome! Booyah!".
She replied that she was really honored he sampled her track and she proposed to come on tour with him to do the singing of the chorus live and he accepted and she even starred in the music video as the girlfriend.
This pretty much started Dido's career.

What's wrong in the music business is that it isn't about music at all. Except the Beatles.
