hey hey, im new to the scene but i really love music disk. i think i must have goten all of the ones at pouet.net and some other sites annyway.
whats the best tracker in your opinion?
can i make this a poll? ive had a madtracker, skale and buzz but i could get anysound out of skale for somreason.. so anyway whats the best tracker? oh and is a it avaliable on linux?

thanks i'll check out modplug though i was looking for a more difiniative anser <shrug> thanks anyway :):):)
i prefer MPT for normal tracking and Buzz for streamed output. it's a matter of taste really.

- Fast Tracker (the only problem it has is that once you learn it, you can't track on anything else)

Madtracker is the best I know of for windows.
But I want to ask why would anyone choose to use Linux? Barely anything runs on it (and what does is usually inferior to Win stuff) and it's a lot more hassle than Windows.
I've never understood why people use Linux but maybe someone can explain the benefits to me.

Since I have always used it, I am partial to Impulse Tracker. It should be possible to control a tracker completely by keyboard..
The future of tracking is probably stuff like Renoise, Buzz etc. which have better mixing quality and a wider range of effects than oldschool trackers like Impulse Tracker or Fast Tracker.
Oh and I would like to vote against using Modplug Tracker. Worst. Interface. Ever.

Renoise is pretty good too, i think but i never got around to use it.
and linux is better coz it's so fucking secure! (ofcourse, no insecure(useful) applications can be made then...)

Personally not being terribly interested about tracking stuff I'll have to send the most sincere thank you to shane for trolling this thread up with the most braindamaged winuxlindows crap ever.

For making music, I've only ever used
1.) the PLAY command in GW-Basic for my parent's Tandy 1000 TL/2
2.) Modplug tracker
I tried others, but... I couldn't figure out how to get them to make noise. Yes, even Madtracker II and Fasttracker II and GoatTracker and Fasttracker III or whatever it is now... Sorry, I'm just stoopid...

On a sidenote, I tried for years to get used to any Windows tracker. It just never happened. On linux, after a little searching I found a couple of trackers. I tried the first one (SoundTracker) and it rocked.

Psycle is a nice toy, yes, but it still drives me mad. Still the same old crappy way of single pattern sequencing, automation sucks ass etc. What a pitty, it's the only usuable free/open source sequencer out there, besides buzz. If you want a real one, you'll have to spend some money, I guess, although I really wish that all those open source/freeware audio/dsp people would finally get their act together.
Midi gear folks with tracking addiction might take a look at aodix 3 and ztracker, btw.

out of modern windows trackers renoise is pretty much the only alternative. skale might turn out nice if they ever get out of the beta stage, currently it's just not very useful. some maschocists have succeeded in getting impulse tracker or even fast tracker to work under win2k/xp - personally i think those oldies still kick some butt, if you need something more you're probably not looking after trackers anyways...

i'm not so enthusiastic about protracker ii. there are no guarantees that it will be worthy of its name. my all time favourite tracker is still protracker 2.3 on the amiga tho :)
where some windows trackers (such as skale) go wrong is that they develop new fancy features (filters, vst, etc) even though the basic stuff isn't working yet (such as the volume column commands and some effect commands). despite its faults i'd say skale is very promising, and there's a lot of good stuff in it already (such as the possibility to re-configure basically everything).
i'm using skale because i need a tracker that saves .xm. ft2 runs on my winxp but i get no sound, so if i need to save .mod, i do an xm in skale using the .mod restrictions, open it in ft2 and save it as a .mod.
