I'm no musician or high end user so the budget HD201 does the trick for me. It's comfortable to wear, the sound is warm and has enough bass. Oh, and I like the clean design...

but returned all of them, because the denons are simply the best i have ever put on my ears.

But this one's photoshopped. The curl doesn't start until 50cm lower. Also it looks like the paddings have been exchanged. Very nice for working with a bit of background noise, because that's not getting inside these babies. Admittedly VERY tight fit at first but I made the choice to stick with them and they've loosened up a little since. Hmm.. what is this topic about? Should I recommend these? I can, but I suggest you try them out first. Probably not for everybody, but they will loosen up after some time. I also love my gf's

Koss PortaPro. Superb for whenever the HD 280 Pros are a little overkill. Shall acquire a pair of my own.

Quite pricey but so good.
It's my third model from the Sony MDR series, I like them very much.
I also had a Beyerdynamic, a little too powerful at bass frequencies to my taste.

Headphones are very important in my production process, because they are my main monitors. I don't trust in speakers. Mostly, I don't have the chance to own a soundproof room.

I bought these when I visited Germany a few years back, 180 Euro at the time. They are very clear for treble and mid-range, bass on the other hand could be a little more refined.

actually i use one of those:


nice sound and sweet noise cancelling (good when you're on a plane or at a demoparty) - not expensive and excellent quality (suitable for a coder)

0€ thus why should I care if they sound good or not, they're still good for dj'ing and checking instrument panning within a given mix ;)

Then again (and thanks to certain party sponsorships), I do have these as well, but they're moreover waiting for some hacks than actually used for any monitoring..

Since this thread moved on, I want to again state that Grado is overrated, just to piss off Irvin who spent two years worth of paychecks on a pair that broke after a few months and quite frankly didn't sound all that good to begin with. :)

How does the HD280 compare to the HD265 ? Been using the HD265 for 10 years now and wanted to buy a new pair, but it seems to have been discontinued. These are the best headphones I've used... Tried the Beyer dynamics but sent it back, terrible sound :(
I'd be curious to try the Denon mentioned above though...
The Koss porta pro is inded incredible for its price and size. I can't imagine anything else plugged to my ipod.

Moby: I haven't tried the HD265, but it is way better than the BeyerDynamic ones I had before. The HD280 is a bit unprecise when it comes to the lower bass registry, but not any worse than anything else in it's price range I'd say.

I have a pair of HD280 Silver, and am very satisfied. It's my third Sennheiser set, and far exceeds the other two I had (one in the HD4-something series, and one in the HD2-something series. can't recall the exact model).

There is something to be said for the longevity of the HD280 as well. I have had mine for over 4 years now, and they still play very well. I only had to use a bit of gaffa around the expanding plates on either side to keep them in place after they were trampled on at Solskogen last year :)

i found the hd 265 to be very dark/bass heavy. not linear at all.

my favourite closed headphones are my modded hd25. i use the velour pads that come with the newer versions and a copper-cable. normally i am not into that audio-esoterics stuff, but here i just tried it and heard the difference. compared to the included steel-cable the copper-cable adds a lot detail and what audiophiles call soundstage. :)

the only downside is that they are not cheap and the bass is a bit boomy, but bass seems to be the problem of every closed headphone. still the hd25 are excellent imho.

The conductance of copper is by a factor of 40 higher than the conductance of steel. Your cable reduces the series-resistance to the speaker by a couple of Ohm. A higher resistance especially attenuates frequencies below the mid-range which results in a more diffuse soundscape; see Blauertsche Bänder (sorry, german only).
So in this case there's nothing esoteric involved.

yeah well but it quickly becomes esoteric if you hear audiophiles talk about about cables and full-size headphones with about 300 ohms etc. the "couple of ohm" can not really matter there ;)
