NVScene 2008!

Dropping 1000euro/year for upgrade really isn't that expensive compared to other hobbies.

1000 euros is 1/6 of my annual income. So while it may be not that expensive for you, it _is_ expensive for some of us. And i'm pretty sure i'm not alone with that.

Everybody should try to code for the gma950, for a refreshing change!

If I ever get an eeepc, I might just start coding a demo on it for kicks. Could be fun.
But, then again, GBA development is even more fun than coding for crappy PC's.
i'd code for gba on crappy PC's!

blala, uhhh you come around on 6000 euros per year and manage to go to breakpoint?? hats off!

finally i'm not the one complaining about hardware :)

been there done that - came over it.

skrebbel, i have priorities :) and breakpoint has much higher priority than a new computer/videocard. (A demobox would be nice, but i was too drunken to realize that they are throwing us computers for free :)

And well, 500 euros is about the average monthly income here, so it was always the same situation: we have to make bigger sacrifices for our hobbies, whatever they are.

thats just standard ! sorry,quisten !
our intro sukks a lot...but always have in mind there are non-coders voting ;) so i tried to do sth visually lookin good :P
still it suxx tho,but nevermind !

placing 11th with that kind of shitcode just proves what JCO said : SO now the scene is aCTUALLLY VOTING FOR shit !!!oneonelevenonehundredandeleven, elfzwölfdreitzehn !

just dont care anymore,optimus ;)
so, where's the list?

blabla: After taxes, right?
demoscene splitted a long time ago, not everyone can stand the upgrade race. maybe that is one of the reasons it is not wide spread in russia. where i live 300e/month is good. i have less.

grag(r)a, yes, of course.

elfh : something you must keep in mind is that sceners don't actually run any hardware race just for the sake of it.

The thing is that after you have spent many years on a given hardware, producing demos according to its respective limitations, it's only fair that you want to take the next step to experiment new things with more powerful hardware.

You can't blame a coder who made c64, zx or 68000 demos to want to give PC a try with software demos first, then try hardware demos with fixed pipiline later on, to eventually try programmable pipelines.

Not only it prevents those people from eventually getting bored but it also opens new paths for creativity and experiments both codewise and artwise.

having said that, a demo still sucks if it doesn't run on 520STF. obviously. :P

another 5 points to keops for missing the point entirely, again...

Blala : I totally understand the money issue but a decent GPU that will run most demoscene productions released this year costs around 70 euros, which is very far from the 1000 euros / year mentionned above.

70 euros VS 1000 euros, surely you can do the maths and draw your own conclusion as to why I did not even take the time to mention it and "miss the point" as usual.

keops: you assume every scene has a desktop computer and space for it.

but then again, fair enough, thats a bogus argument as laptops are more expensive than desktops so i couldve just chosen demowatching over mobility.

70€ ? where ? The cheapest 8800gt (256megs) costs at least 120€
(the gts which was in the demoboxes is or was a more expensive high end card).

Not to mention that such card would probably need a new motherboard which would need a new processor which would need some new memory chip.

Buying cheap devices isn't really a good calculation anyway, they're already outdated the day you buy them.

i would go mid range
buying top notch gpu at approx 450 euros isn't a good calculation either
Even smash is complaining :]

hitchhikr : a 8600 GT costs 70 euros and will indeed run most demos released this year (ask Ryg he has one)

My 2600 costs $80 and can run most demos I downloaded this year (at a decent framerate).

As for the 120 euros of a 8800 GT, that's still far away from the 1000 euros / year announced.

aeko: i agree with you, i doubt DX10 has brought in many revolutionary features over DX9, but if we caricature, newest cards usually mean more fillrate for coders, they can push more polygons than ever, without spending too much time on optimizing for the last generations to focus more on creativity.

and shader model 4 seems to be way more flexible than former model 3, so more creativity too ?

Gah, not this whole thing again.. :) Okay, this is my take on it: imagine your hobby is not the demoscene, but something like skiing or playing soccer. Just getting the basic equipment for those sports will cost you LOADS MORE than a good gfx-card (hell, you'll even get a very decent full PC and still not come close). A gfx-card is just like that - basic sporting equipment for doing demoscene stuff.

Now, Vista is a different matter - I really hope Windows 7 (or whatever it is called) is finished before I'm forced to upgrade to that shit. :)

ps: you are right about videos and such imho, but watching demos in real-time on one's favorite platform(s) is to get one's kicks that beat other kicks :p
