NVScene 2008!
category: general [glöplog]
smash: well, I guess it was because the coders "optimised" them for the compomachine and partyscreen resolution first, and _maybe_ they'll release final versions with other resolutions.
any news when the dtv stream of the compos will be available?
So, what groups released something? Anything by Fairlight or Traction?
heres a yet uncomplete list, but will be incoming soon,i guess...

Thanks guys!
wow, that was one demo compo! 16 demos IIRC.
As usual our demo had some serious sync problems, being shown as #13 before xplsv, Andromeda and plastic was kind of embarrassing :)

i guess the time has come now to ask this question...
dear nvision visitors, i decided not to shell out on a trip to san jose this year and waste the cash on hookers and narcotics instead. after two days at the party, can you please let me know if i made the right decision? feel free to elaborate on the topic. thanks in advance.

ANNOYING TREND ALERT: people not supporting 4:3 monitors at all with their fullscreen modes. on my machine, 16:9 modes fail to initialise.
NVidia Control Panel / Display / Manage custom resolutions: add 1280*720 (and 1920*1080, if your display can handle it).
NVidia Control Panel / Display / Change flat panel scaling: set to "Do not scale" or "Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed aspect-ratio", for a proper 1:1 pixel ratio.
You might also need to update to the latest Forceware driver (175.x WHQL).
I developed/tested my 4k this way (on a 5:4 TFT).
As a representative of the eurotrash here at the NVScene, I regret to inform you that you indeed did fail on a massive scale. This has been one of the best demoparty experiences of my life. I will write an elaborate report at some point, but for now I just want to say that the people here are cool, the event (outside NVScene, and inside of course too) is cool, the weather is fine and it's really a different experience.
Plus, the food is awesome and the compos kicked ass.

havoc: well, you missed rvscene (http://www.rvscene.org/), the best demoparty on 4 wheels! :( i was spoiled because i live in san francisco, about 50 miles (80 km?) from the party place. it was definitely worth it for me. hopefully some euros who traveled here will chime in.
good evening all,
we have just released the 4k compo (live screener) on DTV. Enjoy!
Working now on releasing the live demo compo too. Stay tuned-:)

Rulez, thx metapat.
my mind is still trying to comprehend the awesome 4kb competition that took place yesterday. :)
yeah sorry smash as one of the guilty coders in targeting 1920x1080. it was one of the compo rules and i was focused on getting the demo and effects done first and nice things like the launcher will have to come in the final.
4k Winners:
#1: Texas, by Keyboarders
#2: Receptor by TBC
#3: Photon Race 2 by Archee & Slyspy

metapat: my tuner's nearly molten, how much longer? :)
also, great to hear ppl are enjoying the party so much! the sound of your praise certainly motivates me to consider moving my ass over the pond some day soon :)
I'm waiting for my plane to let me on it so I have a few minutes for some comments: First, the obvious-to-Euros-but-not-Americans surprises:
* Americans and Euros can get along wonderfully in the demoscene. (By association, there can indeed be two NA demoparties in a year without the space/time continuum imploding.)
* Everybody has a chance to learn from each other, regardless of experience or skill.
* Computer graphics techniques are so universal that you can hold a conversation with any demoscener, even if you can barely understand each other due to English not being your native language.
Here’s what I learned that surprised me, mainly because I don’t write demos for modern platforms, only follow them:
* Realtime raytracing with fantastic quality is not only possible, but can be done entirely by the graphics card using pixel shaders (!).
* Most demos (and some 4K intros!) use a scripting/build system, and each major group has their own tools. One very interesting exception is ASD, whose coder writes all sections of the demo with the ability to render along any point in time (ie. f(x) where x is a float from 0 to 1 with 0 the start of the scene and 1 being the end). He said he likes to “scrub” through his demo using the mouse, and doesn’t mind that his scenes are hard-coded because it only takes him 3 seconds to recompile and run.
* Future of the scene for the next two years in two words: Ambient Occlusion.
I would really like to know what the euros who attended NVScene thought of it, and please be honest.
