PSP - homebrew antifriendly

PSP sucks anyway. NDS, GBA and GP2X for the demoscene winnars!!

you can also grab yourself an old Game Gear and a Totek SMS flash cart. you will need to also purchase and adapt a GearMaster Master System > GameGear convertor/adaptor. the adaptation is just a matter of crossing a couple of pins in the converter with a patch wire....this allows you to use your Tottek SMS cartridge on your GameGear with GG roms. That whole adapted kit also make the GameGamer ftw!!

but not PSP, PSP is so lame and for the losers!

For some reason, this does seem to be the prevailing opinion around here...the fact of the matter is the custom firmwares have pushed the PSP vastly further than Sony ever intended the device to go (and light years ahead of the DS). The only handheld that comes close is the GP2X. I really wonder why it hasn't gotten respect as a demo platform?

The lack of a permanent solution to run own made programs is a major let down, i think.
Plus, most of the bigger demos made for that console are flybies and there's a reason for that.

I don't follow...custom firmware allows you to run any unsigned code (read: homebrew). Any PSP can be converted to custom firmware thanks to Dark_Alex's Desperta Del Cementerio v7 (you can even restore a new idstorage to a bricked PSP for goodness sake...the man is a genius). The coding toolchain is freely available. What's the holdup? Suicide Barbie proved that the PSP is a viable platform for demomaking.

Thanks for the help. I will try something at night and I hope nothing goes wrong and my PSP gets bricked :P

When i cracked it back in 2006 i was rather enthusiast about that console
and wanted to explore it more but since then i've been rather disappointed by it's hardware, after having seen the capabilities of the GPU and even if it looked more or less like a lame PC gfxcard from the previous century, it's direct access made me think i could use it for general computing purposes but it didn't work because some wise guy at SQNY with a O thought it would be terribly smart to interleave the stencil buffer with the alpha channel in every GPU operation thus disallowing a lot of possible nifty hacks, a major let down.

Second, i thought about doing some small sized intros, i even succeeded in producing a complete framework in less than 4k but the different file formats of the numerous firmwares + the fucked up way to load libraries (security protections in that console are crawling everywhere) and the poorness of the dev environment made me stop before even finishing an executable files packer for it.

Suicide barbie just proved that people can't go anywhere near it's quality (even with ripped commercial material) and that they'd better abandon the platform right now or suffer the comparison each time they'll release a prod.

honestly now, why do you waste your time on this... Why all this trouble to run a demo on an exotic platform when you can just watch the video (there I said it).

..because it really feels great on the real thing (and the neat PSP screen too :)

The psp can display'em as videos too

yeah, pretend you're watching them demos in realtime while you're actually just showing videos of them on the psp! sounds great :)

Which might actually be a lame alternative if the downgrade doesn't work :)

I sort of wish I could play cave story (and some megadrive emulator) on this piece of plastic though!

Coding for it, I don't know, I don't see much more of a drive than the PS2: In both cases the difficulty of releasing your demo so that others can watch it in a decent way is too much of a bar :/

(other than on youtube or from some lame handy-shaky-camera)

Other than that I guess we'd have to distribute the demo with a pre-baked solution such as: memory stick+pandora battery for psp and memory card: memor32/independence exploit with a cd for the ps2.

In both cases it's a bit steep of a barrier.

Ask and you shall receive:
Cave Story PSP Port
PicoDrive: capable of fully emulating megadrive/megadrive cd games at full speed on both fat/slim units

lol hitchhikr's still bitter about Suicide Barbie
navis: when you actually hold the thing in your hand you just _have_ to see it playing a demo. its a calling from the hardware demon..

navis: why run an asd demo on your pc when you can just the video... and also what ps said.

Navis; weren't you raving about watching Lifeforce on your EEE at 1fps? :D
i have that cave story on my psp too. is it really the full cave story game ?

Whatever is released on GP2X, gets also released in PSP.

i bought my PSP for homebrew shit, the games in the early days of the PSP, sucked ass. then already you had to use GTA exploits and whatnot, firmware downgrades. and all that shit didn't even work halfway. i never got to the hello world stage and after a few days i gave up. so, then i got a GP2X. PSP is still the most powerful handheld around. but the fun is not there imho.

I kind of agree with hitchhikr on the impact of Suicide Barbie. I also got a PSP and started doing some small effects, but I know that nothing I ever do will come close to what TBL did.
Damn TBL for releasing such a demo early on in a consoles scene-life. You are supposed to start out with crap and then gradually over many years work your way upward! :D

Bought my PSP few years ago ( after some thoughts of buying a GP2X, but really PSP was sexier ).
And this is some real fine piece of hardware ... and once you setup the toolchain, and downgrade the FW, you're good to go, and that's not quite a difficult task imho.

What i find quite depressing is the homebrew scene : quite dull at the moment, really mis-employing the hardware, with 2d crappy-lua based games. Oh well, maybe it's our duty to rock this scene too ... think of it ^^

i never tried the firmware downgrade. it could be that this would have made a big difference. but it's tricky when booting a new game overwrites the fw again ;)
