Scientists discover: the scene is not dead.

How does the scientist say.
Don't trust any statistic you've not faked by yourself. :)

Care to do the same for releases/year

I would imagine that a "productions per year" would be a rather sad sight.
I think it's been said many times between the lines in this thread, but the scene looking statistically more alive today is probably due to the fact that almost no one releases anything in between parties.
Further research conducted last night proved irrevocably that if very small parties are factored out from the equation, the peak year of the scene was 1995, and that the drop and consequent plateau ("death of the demoscene") was not, as some claim, resulting from the rekease if mr. black by orange, but instead resulted from the release of dope by complex.
We will conduct further experiments with a closed sample of the target population during this weekend at an undisclosed location somewhere near the swiss alps.

we want more diagrams!
Now divide that between the number of home computers per year to get a sad chart
Hooray for scene chart analysts \o/
Now I want trend-lines to place my limit and stop-loss orders, plz.
++ COMMODITY NEWS +++ JUST IN +++ OMG +++ WTF +++ SCHEI
according to the bullish outlook on scene commodities other precious metals
as well as all other commodity futures slumped dramaticly during the open market.
Another clue for investors to rally the scene productions may have been
the announcement at recently held conference Evoke in cologne, that
it is springtime for Hitler and germany...

Figure 4: an example of argument of the Statistic Mafia theory: the 59.93% increase in SCENE RELEASES futures suggests the perception of a productive scene year. Releases exchanges are increasing aswell as shown in Figure 1.
This will probably result in ### ILLEGAL TELEPATHY ### or in an unexpected DEMOSHOCK in the japanese scene.
Rating: BUY.

To figure out the real health of the scene, we need a solid, long term, reliable measurement of demo quality. Such a thing exists, yes!
So, can we have a chart showing the number of sprite records broken against time please?

how about making a chart by computing the hash of solo2's comment and summing them up?
The scene is dead. Learn to live with it!
After extensive and exhausting research by a team of Dutch and Peruvian specialists, with the help of nVidia computational analysts, a groundbreaking discovery has been made: The scene is in fact not dying.
The proof:
The average number of releases per party in a given year has, as can be seen from the above chart, been relatively trying to look like the pouet pig. Despite current public opinion, it truly is.. just look at it yourself!
More extensive research into this matter may be made in the future if cooperation with our South-African colleagues, and establishing access to their gold-mining facilities, has been a bitch thusfar.

Maali: say hi to our Dutch/Peruvian friend, Sal-One, and tell him to get to Breakpoint.
As for proof: I'm at Buenzli. There's a compo going on. Scene isn't dead. Lamers abound, trying to say it is. Lamers get fuckings.

It'd be interesting to see a chart about the number of demoparties a year next to this one...
boyc: here you are (log y-scale)
I did something like that last year. You can very nicely see rise and fall of The Party and how it was cannibalized by MS.
P.s.: The scene died in 1997
Ok now, do that with french releases / parties :)
The scene is alive and don't forget to come to Inercia demoparty 2008 !!! (ahh this time i didn't write 2005 :P)
In 1999 the scene was in disarray. Both The Party and The Gathering were losing momentum and MS and Assembly were not yet able to attract sufficient releases, leading to more than 15% decline in demoscene productivity. The same year marks the onset of the stellar rise of mekka-symposium with an unprecedented average yoy growth above 40% for the next two years.
i love statistics, so here's what i just made in excel!
also, scientists discover, the new excel has wicked possibilities!
