Scientists discover: the scene is not dead.
category: general [glöplog]
After extensive and exhausting research by a team of Finnish and Italian specialists, with the help of Norwegian computational analysts, a groundbreaking discovery has been made: The scene is in fact not dying.
The proof:
The average number of releases per party in a given year has, as can be seen from the above chart, been relatively stable for about a decade. Despite current public opinion, the ongoing year, 2008, is, in fact the year with the highest average number of releases per party thus far in the whole history of the demoscene.
More extensive research into this matter may be made in the future if cooperation with our Portuguese colleagues, and access to their data-mining facilities, is be established.

That's quite interesting really. Care to do the same for releases/year, 64k/party, 4k/party, demo/party, 64k/year, 4k/year, demo/year?
LOL :D
Affirmative. I poked one; It was dead.
so what you are saying is that in 97, when orange released mr.black, everything went to hell?
Now do quality releases/year please.
do also a chart for releases outside demoparties. :)
Do crap memes/year
statistics can prove anything!!!
I strongly want to see this as a feature in Pouet v2 or even maybe in this one. That'd rule.
wait
i've got the perfect idea to make the scene more alive than ever
let's cancel all parties outside holland
that will divide all releases over 3 parties, resulting in an explosive development of the above graph, and thus scene revival
waaaahoooo i am opening the champagne already!!!!1

done that chart after breakpoint :)
zest : now thats what i call a fire-effect on an obscure platform!
Where did you get the data for releases/party from? Just wondering if you have proven that the scene is alive or how good people have become at adding new information on pouet
http://www.pouet.net/parties.php has the number of releases pr party ;)
So yeah, its probably the latter :D
Now if we just could get a graph on "signal to noise-ratio in Pouet bbs".
around -50 dB
I would imagine that a "productions per year" would be a rather sad sight.
dixan: i would rephrase.
the graph proves the impression that since 1997 was the climax for the scene for a long time. but since 2007 the stagnation is over and we are seeing a regain of strong releases mainly because of groups taking initiative with fresh ideas and massive demos. imho kudos go to groups like ASD, FR, FLT, Still, MFX, etc.
and nvision will be the next climax.
this is "jar's law": demoscene activity comes in waves of 10 years each.
go figure.

dixan: the problem is that since 2000, rob is jarig has been released increasingly often and now makes up half of the releases at any particular party.
Not that I doubt Dixan or the Norwegian computational analysts, but I have a strong feeling this chart does not reflect reality. :)
Proof it, like a real scientist :)
Rob: I've been nagging the Hungarian data-mining hobbit squad for ages - feel free to do the same. :)
