3-day demoparty schedules

category: general [glöplog]
niels: agreed, the scene has to adapt itself to reality. my point was just that bruteforcing that process makes no sense, what you propose should rather be reached by gentle persuaision imho.

gargaj, in my experience those who can timewise afford to stay the extra day do so regardless of when the compos are organised. perhaps the fact that we have a relatively high comfort level (read: decent bed for every visitor) also makes it easier on visitors to stay.

garg, most people do *not* live in the town where the party is held (and trains wont go after the prizegiving anymore. and they can't drive because drunk. and because they don't wanna, because it's such a great atmosphere)

havoc: ok well, yeah, i see the point in that. but what is often seen is that 'scenes' (in the broadest sense) tend to get stuck to a certain modus operandi until someone just dares to take the step and innovates in a rather abrupt manner.

gentle persuasion will probably work, but i just think that giving it a shot (pushing the deadline-compo-ceremony cycle back and cutting back on compos) might just be well received if one of the major players tried it.

plek, we'll do it next time you *show up*, ok!

i was wondering for how long you or okkie were gonna hold back on that (cheap?) shot :)

yes, it is true, i am no longer a demoparty regular. for years. does this devaluate my opinion? ;)

"you can organize some kind of breakfast thing or whatever on sunday I guess."

a breakfast brunch after a hard night of partying and not winning the compos would definitely kick ass.

oh or demozone for that matter. "a dutch party".

cool. good eatin' after hard partying always makes me feel tons better. people go home happier == more good memories :)

sure, there's always the lone participant with different plans. last outline (or was it the year before?) some dutch sceners left the party half way to drive across the country (really. edge to edge.) for some brbrrwlwrenPLOINKtrrrrrkkkrrr performance, autechre or something. and to drive back that same night to do some more partying but ok :-)

point is, those people are the minority. i can't imagine half a demoparty leaving at 02:00 saturday night after the prizegiving.

i remember us leaving outline, heading for bp some years ago :)

you dont need to imagine, i see that happen every year.

in my view, that is exactly what is (about to) happen(ing) right now. just look at nvision and the intel demoscene compo, the only missing part compared to what you propose is the boozeparty after the compos are completed. so yeah, we're not there yet, but it's nothing close to blind fundamentalism either ;)

actually, your sometimes (intentionally? :)) outdated argumentation serves very well to illustrate the changes more actively involved individuals perceive. so i for one am happy to hear your voice in this discussion :)

strongly depends on the type of party I guess. but having people 'stick around' by forcing them through a pricegiving ceremony somehow feels wrong too, right?

havoc: well, nvision is stil quiite different from your average party. i didnt want to go that far rightaway (even though we yet have to see how it turns out as an event).

furthermore i just combine (extrapolation of) past experiences plus what i read/see in results to form some ideas or opinions. i'll be happy to stand corrected on those points that count as outdated. care to bring one up? :)

not if they entered the compos...

gargaj, is that function? or where? does the whole .hu scene live in budapest or sth? weird :)

but ok, in that case you have a point.
added on the 2008-08-11 17:40:11 by skrebbel skrebbel
well apparently the competition + the result is the only thing they're after then, right? you're just forcing them to stay by creating a gap between that. i dont see the point of that.

people should *want* to stay, and not just because of a statistic they're waiting for.
added on the 2008-08-11 17:40:44 by superplek superplek
gargaj, the solution, of course, still is beds + breakfast, not moving the prize ceremony :-D

but sure thing, the situation and possibilities are different everywhere.

Uhm, if the prizegiving is shortly after the demo compo, why not make a voting competition run in that time? Say, the ones who vote first on _ALL_ entries from even the least important compos and that half-way seriously, get a prize.

What is half-way seriously?... uhm, say, close to average of the other visitors?

skrebbel: pretty much, or at least 80%

plek: so what would you to make them stay with if they're only there for the compos?
added on the 2008-08-11 17:43:58 by Gargaj Gargaj
gargaj, scary :)

so, move it to a group accomodation in the forest :)
(okok fair enough, would completely change the atmosphere/concept/everything)

perhaps i wouldnt. or try to actively involve them in some inbetween activity.

i remember that at the first bcn i attended, we went out into barcelona with a rather large group to eat and a bit of clubbing. that was a great night filler (not that that particular party needed it per-se, i had loads of fun as it was already).

so perhaps going into town and visiting some club or cafes to socialize in an 'organized form' might be a doable thing on smaller parties. allthough i must admit i dont know how many people attend function :)

there are all kinds of things you can do i guess, just try to involve everyone. even putting large benches and a few beer taps outside the building (if the weather permits it) would be cool i guess.

niels, if i get the chance to make points to prove you utterly wrong, trust me, i will do so. the problem is, you're not so often wrong, especially not considering your POV. my problem as a party organiser, however, is that i have to come up with a solution that solves the problem in the entire scene's POV, or i will get blasted for it. that dictates politics, and in a mixture of ceasarianism and good dutch tradition, i opt for the poldermodel (ie. everyone gets to say what they want until they get tired of disagreeing, after which i pretend to have listened and seize the bounty (visitors) on outline's behalf). :-)

skrebbel: i would love to have function in an even cooler comfier place, but who would leave the city for it? it's hard enough to get people to a different district already. (function isnt exactly in the middle of budapest)
