Just listening to it now & nodding to dalezy: something I've also been missing since the arts went down.

So you’ve heard something about the demoscene. You know that it’s a collection of highly talented digital artists from around the world who produce mind blowing demonstrations on all sorts of computer hardware.
(from demoscene.bitfellas.org)

that must be the most arrogant outreach i've read in quite a little while. i'm not sure if i'm happy about it - especially since that attitude ("omfg we're so awesome") is not at all the scene spirit.

also i doubt it makes anyone want to be part of it.

Thanks for the feedback, I think you're right. We need to tone that down so we don't scare away newcomers. I think taking out "mind blowing" and "highly talented" or even just "highly" will already do the job.

what's wrong with "collection of digital artists"? then you can maybe even keep the mind blowing part.

I was expecting this to be more of a fooling around and silly voices session

Well, okkie _does_ sound a little like kermit. But maybe that's just me. :)

we are still in beta and not really being advertised outside the scene yet so now is a good time to tell us what you think. we want to get things right before we start getting more exposure. we're already aware of quite a few things that we need to work on..!

the attitude was never intended to be "omfg we're so awesome" but more "we're damn proud of what we do". it does sound like it's not coming across as intended though.. so we need to address that for sure

thanks for the feedback! :)

special guests

"Special" as in "Special olympics", or...? ;)
@skrebbel unfortunatly 95% of the releases are not exactly close to something that could be called "mind blowing" so its indeed better to stay away from using this term.

Nutman: I'll leave that to you to figure that out. :)

...and besides, we could probably all learn enough from people participating in the special olympics.

Yup. I'm pretty sure I would be one hell of a one-legged runner!
xenusion, well, mind blowing is the goal of all of them, though. but sure, you have a point. imagine people reading "mind blowing" and then pressing random on pouet just to stumble upon rush hour :)

oh and include the apshyxia guy's story about that little boy who wants to code demos. it's eternal :)

tomaes: It ain't easy being green, y'know!

And I concur with Skrebbel on the first sentence of the demoscene site. But then again, we Dutch are pretty modest, so we would never go out and say 'I'm fucking awesome! woo!'. :)

Just drop all the 'highly's and 'amazing's and it should be fine.

the point of having the outreach site is to filter the demoscene for non-sceners. part of this involves sorting out the mind-blowing from the other 95% of the demos. we really want to show them the best and we definitely don't want to tell them "here you are, just go hit the random button on pouet".. at least not until they've got a better understanding of the scene ;)

i think perhaps mind-blowing *is* the wrong phrase as i'm not just talking about the lifeforeces and the debris.. i'm also talking about the unusual demos, the demos from first timers, the crowd pleasers, the ones that make people laugh - the ones that will pique the interest of outsiders and make them want to find out more. so.. any suggestions for a better phrase?

remember that our target audience is non-sceners. we want to hide them from the flame wars and the pouet trolling until they're ready. to get them ready we plan to show them the best that the scene has to offer, and that definitely includes things like "scene spirit" and parties

i'm planing on doing a round-up of assembly demos and, hopefully, this will set out our stall a bit more about what i mean here :)

finally... i don't want to derail the radio thread any more so i suggest that we open up a new thread. would anyone object massively if i took this over to the bitfellas forums?

although i'm aware of the site being beta, the overall design also doesn't go too well with "highly talented" and "mindblowing", i'm afraid. quite the contrary, actually. it looks so utterly dated, oldschool (in a bad way) and amateurish, that it sabotages the snobby text instantly. anybody "highly talented" would be either irritated or amused at best.

i agree with monroe. get ck to redesign the site. he is graphic designer or trace or just somebody else who has teh skills to do so...
added on the 2008-07-31 12:53:09 by uns3en_ uns3en_
monroe, sure, they could've asked a "highly talented" designer... but they wanted the site online within 2,5 years after announcing it. so put a sock in it already, will ya?
added on the 2008-07-31 12:54:57 by havoc havoc
Havoc: Actually, no, we won't. I agree completely with monroe. For a normal retro BitFellas subsite this works okay, but when appealing to "outsiders", the design needs to be brought into the 21st century. There is also too much text there (and "the wrong text" as well, IMHO), plus the whole BitFellas menu-bar at the top has no right to life on such a site, so please remove it. It is simply confusing and alienating.

..but don't get me wrong, I applaud the effort - such a site is sorely needed!
