NVScene 2008!

category: general [glöplog]
micksam7: Some of the kits have been sent out, but some are waiting in storage to be completed. We had some logistics issues with getting the CPUs for some of the kits. Rest assured, you will be updated when everything has gone out.

Sorry for the delay guys.

English has a clearly defined structure which applies to everyone.

Perhaps, gloom, but as long as you insist on employing the nomenclature of a post-colonial dialect, with terms like 'period' instead of 'full stop', you're not actually speaking English either. I have nothing against the lexicographical and phrasiological nuances fabricated by proponents of American English over the decades; I simply expect that somebody so concerned about clear definitions as yourself should take care to make the distinction between the two languages.

Pedantic? Perhaps. More pedantic than you? Well as long as I can get the gist of one of cocoon's posts (or indeed any of the billions of grammatically creative postings on the Internet) without having to waste too much of my time preparing assessment feedback and criticism against my own subjective criteria, then not even such a bristling, stuck-up refusenik of American English's inexorable and garbled march across the face of capitalism as myself can find it necessary to hassle him about the positioning of some bloody exclamation marks. Or is that 'exclamation point'? Or 'bang', for the truly deranged...

And besides, multiple exclamation marks can turn any mundane post into the high-point of somebody's day!!!!!!$£%)%_!%)

The application of polysyllabic etymologic quagmires sadly only have a minuscule effect on a misguided reasoning :)
added on the 2008-06-12 14:08:53 by Gargaj Gargaj
I didn't even start on the etymology ;) The reasoning is not misguided however, and arises from gloom's having advised cocoon to "conform or shove off", as I believe it went. So if it's not reasonable for a pedant to stick up for somebody who's being bullied by somebody who can only rely on disingenuous arguments and confused principles, then I don't know what is.

You're a nice guy, Gargaj! A public face for NVScene who didn't bully the international demoscene community over petty linguistic issues might go down a little bit better!

Oh, I see - his misguided reasoning! I should read posts properly before replying. Wouldn't the world be a better place?

Both, actually - his point was that having superfluous and gratuitous punctuation and an essentially entropic capitalization method in a paragraph makes the perception of the actual meaning of the sentence structure considerably more difficult. The fact that he pointed it out in his beautifully uncompromising style is, well, something that can be debated :)

But really, it's a moot point - let's leave the subject, especially because I'm running out of vocabulary. :D

Something tells me that some people will use this excuse to get away with free hardware and no demo in the end :)

syphus, stop it already. i had to read your posts three times before i got them! explaining about english is no excuse to write such difficult gibberish, no matter how correct it is!

You're probably right but on the other hand..

A perfectly capable and large company makes this offer to the scene. People sign up, some people get their boxes at Breakpoint, all fine and dandy.

Demoboxes that put you as developer in the position to utilize the most modern of features. Which is kinda what they want you to do, being nVidia and all I guess.

And then you'll see that for some they'll arrive maybe one and a half month short of the competition itself. .

Draw your own conclusion.

(buy your own hardware? sure -- but don't promise boxes on time if you can't deliver -- and I'm not blaming any of the sceners representing nVidia in organization here..)

(to emphasize: instead of 'free hardware', one could also regard this as 'tools needed to make the production')

I'd have to check a thousand logs to be completely sure, but.. have any promises on delivery date ever been made? I'm not saying this excuses the late delivery, just that it ought to grant us (yes, I'm saying 'us', because there are sceners deeply involved in the arranging of this thing) at least a bit of slack.

No, it's free hardware. If you're in the demoscene, you already should be equipped with at least a decent rig to produce your stuff on. Granted, replacing it with top-notch stuff will allow you to do more (we sure hope so! :) but it's not 'tools needed to make the production'.

Again; sure, I get the impatience, but ranting won't speed up anything. :) We are simply waiting for CPUs - as soon as they have reached the central warehouse in Germany, things will go out speedily enough.

Maybe I should rephrase ;)

"Something tells me that some people will use this *sorry* excuse to get away with free hardware and no demo in the end :)"

Surely no promises have been made, but as you already state yourself that does not excuse late delivery. I do not understand why you sceners have to do this while in reality you just could've delivered a list of addresses to nVidia itself and have them handle the logistics.

Thank you for telling me what I should and should not have lying around in my own home to qualify as a scener. In reality, I was not planning on making a demo any time soon and thus did not have the really proper hardware nor the inclination to buy it. This however was a nice motivator, I wrote most of the demosystem on the crappy piece of shit I *do* have standing around and I'm waiting for the hip hardware to pull off some nice looking stuff. And I'm not gonna walk to the store and spend like 500/600 euros on new stuff knowing that in a few weeks I'll get the box you know.. But coding effects in 320x240 isn't exactly fun.

We're talking in circles here. You feel like this is an attack from me on people like you busting your asses to get this done, but it simply is not.

But damnit I'll deliver.

You should change it to 320x200. Much funnier.

not that i'd contribute anything to nvscene nor did i request any hardware goodies but my all-time demo top five isn't exactly about the hardware it was made for...

Demoscene != only PC. I'm quite content having older hardware, but I'd be very interested to trying new stuff too. I'm just not very interested paying top dollar for it.
