ah, memories. I had a company worse then that, and I played cat&mouse with them! here's a short version of the story:

I had a linux box at home running as a server with apache+mod_ssl, VNC and SSH.

at first VNC worked (port 5900) and I was able to just use VNC to browse the internet remotely. Then ports >1024 were blocked.

I could set VNC To work on lower port but since VNC is buffering a display, it is rather slow to actually get some stuff done. Then I tried SSH, (port 22) which can compress the running data and tunnel 64k connections. tunneling port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) worked fine, untill company blocked port all ports except 443 (HTTPS), so I simply changed SSH to listen to port 443 and it lasted a week until company closed all ports and activated a proxy that almost all trafic must go through.

Then I used Ajaxterm to IRC, pHproxy to browse the webm, icecast for http music and more (you can use apache to tunnel anything you want using ProxyRedirect). this worked wonders for ~6 months until one day company bans my dyndns IP range from the connections... and I'm mad.

something no one will ever block is ICMP - the protocol that is use to ping. using ICMP tunnelling was my last resort, and it worked until the day I left.
PingTunnel and itun are good tunneling programs. Just make sure you got a lot of upload bandwidth, cause al of those systems are upload pigs.

If you need anything, I might be able to help, since I know what it's like as well as several tactics.

Yeah, I wrote to NOV IT and a bunch of other companies to explain that Pouet hosts 96k games. Just doing my duty as a responsible intarwebs citizen. You're welcome.

at my school, pouet is categorized as "porn" in the firewall O_o
I once had yahoo mail, irc and msn stopped (but never pouet !) and it was madness. Solution: changed jobs.

Lira: bloody brilliant. Personally, I think any thinking Joe running a web company should hire you immediately.

is it just me here who thinks that all that effort made you waste much of your top-energy working time on non-work, having been encouraged so by your employer? ok, i don't know what kind of work you do, how spectacularly large the cubicle hall exactly is over there, etcetera, but wouldn't asking the sysadmin to be reasonable not be much more productive for either side? him, or your direct boss? (who can ask his direct boss if need be, etc)

in short, to me it feels like these companies are cutting their own fingers. encouraging people to not do private stuff at work is fine, but only people can do that, not technology.

LiraNuna's case isn't uncommon in the 'other scene', except that sysadmins are often implicated :>

LiraNuna: you must have really liked your work or employer? :)

personally, i'm still pouetting and dhsing alot. but i dropped instant messengers and irc alike. for me, they were too counterproductive.

i would work harder and visit less frequently if the office i'm sitting in wasn't such a darn irritating environment.

this isn't going at all well.

in my future job as net/sysadmin i'll never block pouet for the employees ^^
that said, i doubt they would ever attempt to go there.

i'll just block the entire internets but pouet. MUAHA!

LiraNuna: blocked ICMP is common. Wrong, but common.

(Yes, anyone concerned, it's still possible to defeat that scenario.)
