That's really odd. It works fine in Firefox for me, but actually it shows up odd in IE. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I guess I'll see if I can enforce aspect-ratio in the player, but it shouldn't be doing that.

just re-checked the non-alt version and now it still screws up.
Seems like a randomly appearing bug.

I updated the player to try and force the correct aspect ratio. Might need to do a full cache refresh to get it to show up. Let me know if it occurs again.

I've recently uploaded this (originally from here) which looks quite crappy in some parts. Automatic bitrate allocation simply doesn't match the perceived quality, so it requires some manual tweaking and probably some prefiltering to make the encoders life a bit easier.
The same problem will most probably apply to some more demos of the dos era.
That's why I would like to bypass the reencoding step and supply captures in a ready-to-use format.
Would be cool if you could work something out...

hellfire - I'll definately be opening that up soon. Just I need some way to vertify videos actually work on flash. For whatever reason, flash doesn't like some of the mp4s I throw at it [example: mp4s VLC puts out].

Updated alt player with file download [little arrow button]. It depends on the vid, but newer vids will give you a mp4 just renamed as a .flv. Older ones really are flv files [VP6]. Also made the alt player the default since I like the library a lot, makes things a lot easier on my end.

Also adjusted the colors a bit to tone down the default white and made it possible to get back to the capped page.

I'll update the encoder and uploader tomorrow to allow for strait MP4 uploads and higher resolutions. That's all for today.

For hires-videos it might be a nice bonus if you could somehow display the average bitrate. Just to know if streaming will actually make sense...

hellfire - Will add that. Right now the hi-res videos that I have up are actually the same bitrate as the low-res videos [~1024 kbit]. I'll probably bump up the converter to ~1250 kbit for highres though and let other people upload mp4 videos up to 3000 kbit average bitrate. Anything more is a bit too much for streaming video in my opinion [expecially since my connection is only 1.5 mbit downstream anyway ;p].

Anyway, any more suggestions let me know and I'll get them implimented tonight along with updating the converter and uploader for high-res.

I know you said you were improving sound quality, but any chance on increased audio quality?
I just went to capped so I could listen to the Invoke / Still music on my linux machine, and it was so bad I ended up turning it off.

The BPTV stream sound was awesome quality (for a Flash stream...), perhaps you could use the same settings?

A good example of failing spectral band replication...

For whatever reason, the invoke / still vid was uploaded at a sample rate of 22050 Hz and a bitrate of 56 kbit[?!]. I'll try and get my own capture of it and put it up.

Just to note, I'm using AAC two-pass at 96 kbit. It should be good for most people, if not, I'll bump it up to 126 kbit. Some of the vids [such as Metamorphosis] were accidently passed through a resampler, I've fixed it since and they'll be re-encoded soon.

Test some of the other videos, let me know if sound quality is bad on others, they all sound fairly clean to me except the invoke one.

Anyway, in a bit I'm going to pass all uploaded videos through the encoder again for higher resolutions and some fixes to the encoder. Let me know if there's other issues before I do that. :)

Strait mp4 uploading will be enabled in about an hour or two. I'm going to fix the player first as there's a few odd issues with it.

Lots of fun changes for today:

- Enabled MP4 uploads. There's a few restrictions, but simply mail me to get around them if you need to. Note it still goes through queue for mirroring stuff, but it doesn't take forever to encode.
- Uploader now has quality selection. Normal quality will work for most demos. High and Very High are for odd demos with have a whole heckton of motion or details.
- Along with quality selection, the encoder will select a bitrate automaticly depending on video size. I'll probably change it if people have issues with it though.
- Fixed clicking on player causing you to go to the capped page, even if you're already there. [Now it only happens on the embedded player, and you can disable it by adding "&nolink=true" to the player urls in the embed code]
- Fixed download link going to the wrong domain causing you to download the entire vid again [since it should be in cache].
- And of course, upped the resolution of uploaded videos to 640x480.

Current vids are being re-encoded right now for the higher res. Though most of the ones without uploaders will have to be done by me manuelly over the next few weeks since I don't have the original files for them on the server. :(

Anyway, let me know any more suggestions or bugs.

i gave it a first try (here) and it seems to work fine.
i used 1900kbit h264 video and 80kbit aac-he+ audio, muxed in mp4box.
now my question is what's a reasonable bitrate for streaming?

I would actually like to be able to find the direct link to the FLV-file, for editing to motion graphics sites, such as the excellent XPLSV.tv

Also, it is a bit of an "eye-fight" when the background of the page is bright white. Having it black or at least darker would help a lot. There is a reason why most TVs have a black frame these days :)

a cool (dark) design would of course be awesomest. that (imho) really added to the bp party stream (not that i saw much of it but ok).

hellfire - I ussually do width * height / 150 to get the bitrate in kbits for high-motion vids. The encoder does this now too. / 200 for normal vids, and / 100 for those really high detail and motion vids.

Unfortunately I can't watch anything over 1000 kbits due to lame internet speeds. :( I ussually have to pause the vids and wait for them to load almost entirely. :p Anyway, if possible try 1000 kbits first, then use higher bitrates if the video artifacts too much.

Ok some changes for today:

- Added file info back into the player. Note it only supports basic characters as embedding the entire font will size up the player to about 200 KBs.

I'll be doing changes to the website for search and such sometime later this week.

Not a whole lot of changes today, but I just checked my log files

151 GBs used the past 4 days. Over 5,000 video views, most of the views where of the Linger in Shadows demo by plastic. My guess is that a lot of those PS3/gamer sites are using the embedded player for the plastic demo.

Fun stuff :) [and for those wondering, I have plenty of bandwidth at the moment, a friend is using the box for apps and pays for it, I get to use the spare bandwidth and cpu cycles in return for admining the box. I'm saving any donations for when a video gets -too- popular and I have to pay overages ($0.10 USD / GB) - There's no secondary encoding server now though ;P was overkill]

Hopefully I can get a more exact reading of views with a few site updates. Till then I have to work most of the week on other projects and attend a US party, so updates will be sparce. :)
