So basically looking for a breadbox c64+1541 to buy, possibly with a MMC card reader? (whatever's the most convenient for demo-watching/recording/making)

Best would be a package that the seller has used or tested recently.

If noone can offer a nice kit for you I would suggest that you go for the 1541 ultimate since it will provide full 1541 compability while using mmc card for storage. And it also has cartridge functionality and can work as an action replay. Theres some discussion about the beauty here. The catch is that its hobby project and hasnt been released yet, but theres some 150 people who have paid 100 euro in advance, and delivery will hopefully begin within a month.
It is promising to be the most complete and simple solution for watching demos on c64.

I was actually looking forward to it, although as far as these things go, it can take from months to years to really appear. It's definitely a kit I'd be willing to spend some money on.

what kind of "clone" is it? Can I trust its SID?

I meant the disk drive isnt a 1541 but one of the non-commodore ones....the C64 is completely genuine I guess.

it's one of those newish looking ones though .. No issues with a 1541 clone and diskloaders?

I have an old style c64+1541, I can take it to Breakpoint if you wish. Tried today and it works nicely. Comes with a fastloader cartridge and the original power supply.
