how much "geek" do you consider yourself?

category: general [glöplog]
17,something% I had taken more silly tests like this :)

How/what kind of geek I am in words:

I am 23 years old virgin, living with my parents, don't currently work but wait to finish my studies in order to get away. However, I rarelly study, when the exams period is really close! I really, really, really can't bother with studies or exams, I prefer going home and opening my computer.

I have a lot of computers at home. My regular PC and two towers with 486 and 386 configurations. And more than 150 hardware pieces that I lately photograph to put them in my website. (soonish :) plus a lot of vintage computers I own.

For some reasons, my older dreams were to spend all my day to become superrior in the demoscene, but this never worked. I also always had the strange wish to try making really optimized software for greatly obsollete pieces of hardware.

I am very hot showing to illiterate PC gamers my 1st CPC demo and my quickbasic effects, making them wondering what's the use of them is. :)

I also once wanted to date with female geeks. A passion that I was oblidged to leave away.. (I hope)

What else? Hmm..

Enough times, I was an "anti-getalife" maniac, planned to write a Freak Manifest, hated the coppied memes of stereotypes of the common opinion, mainstream, or something that I can't explain. I wanted to fight against that! But I discovered it's worthless and I am a part of the same lame thing..

Discussions about girls and computers, anti-getalife, against hardware requirements, technicall stuff on demoeffects, always hooked me up and obsessed me to read to the end.

And all the other you are hearing about me through the net. ;P

The funny thing is that I am changing and changing to getting away from the old geeky self. Understanding my lameness, becoming open and more social through the years, having more real life friends, my best one beeing a real life friend (but still a geek :) understanding actually my position and planning of what's needed to get independent. Only that I understood and recently rejected some of my hardest old passions (female geeks, devotion to the demoscene), might be very sad for me, but an interesting change too. I don't know where I will go. But I am still a geek in heart.

The best way to diferrentiate is to pretend beeing normal. But why should I try to differentiate? Lol.

Optimus: You may as well give up now. No matter how hard you try to escape and change yourself, you will always be a greek ;)

Correction: The best way to diferrentiate is to become normal.

It's funny that most people try to show up that they are "normal" in deep truth. But even the ones who were telling me "get a life", these ones are normal as "normal" the society/common opinion understands. It's just a worthless idea. I can easilly find a lot of flaws in the normality of those "hey look, I am a cool guy who has a life, does gym, have girlfriend, goes out" and our society is supposed to be normal but is a rotten thing in reality. We have just learned that specific things are supposed to be normal but that's subjective, or actually nonexistent because everyone is diferrent really and the "normal" world sucks anyways..

All these "get a life", "normal", "geek", "weird" stereotypes are thigns I shouldn't be engage with at all :(

Blah!

Nobody is really normal. Normal is a perfect state of mind which is an utopy. Which normal person would ever try to define how exactly our lifes should be, to be considered as normal?

Yes, I too find plenty of flaws in "having a life", "a girlfriend" and "going out". It's just so much gosh-darned *fun*, dammit! I don't want that!

Optimus: It's not a question of being "normal," but more a matter of living a balanced life. You know, a little of this, a little of that, etc.. Too much of any one thing is detrimental to personal well-being.
Well, I didn't said these things are bad, I just named the "normal" people as "hey look, I am a cool guy who has a life, does gym, have girlfriend, goes out" people and that's all. But anyways, I almost never make a point out of my writtings :)

I can only say that trying to find a girlfriend would be something new and good for me. It's the only thing of them I miss now and the hardest part. I wish my world domination plan for 2008 would be getting laid and not finishing a kick ass demo for the future or anything darker. Time will tell..

I also miss independecy, almost forgot...

P.S. Oh,. and I really take much funnier all these issues today! ;P

Thom: This, which ancient Greeks have said, is not a satisfactory answer for me: "Pan Metron Ariston" which means something like: to set a limit/meter on everything is the best, meaning something like what you said. Ok,. another reason why I don't like it is because everybody was referring to that in order to go against my geekness, having an air in their speach like "The wise ancient greeks said that and it's the answer to all, the recipe of living! That's why the life you are doing is not physicall and that's a rule."

But:
1st) Society was very diferrent then and weird things were considered normal then. Limits/Meters were diferrent.
2nd) Who can judge when someone is exagerrating or what is the limit, the border that let us away from normality. It's very subjective really.
3rd) It doesn't make me happy. The way my "friends" used that phrase against me, was like rejecting my own way of life, praising upon the words of some "wise" men. It was very sad, I knew there was something wrong but I couldn't respond with something valid. I thought I was physically wrong :(

As for the subjective matter:

A girl once asked me how much time I am sitting on the PC everyday and I replied 2-3 hours average (at my old ages, when it was forbidden from my family). She replied "Wow! They are too many!!!" which was a surprise for me (she was just prejudged because she knew I was a geek, but she didn't knew these hours are too few for a geek). Today I am sitting around 8-10 hours usually and many geeks do that too and seems common in the geek society.

Also, I have heard geeks criticizing insane geeks, for example one who went to a demoparty and couldn't stand because his computer didn't arrived to the partyplace, wasn't talking to anyone, he was all the day anxious just for his computer, etc. A very weird thing. I also heard rumors of another geek who had coded 72hours a megademo and drinking a lot of coffee but in an interview he was sooo cool and pissing away "get a life' arguments with ease! A third one which Antitec met in Ze Meeting, came into the meeting, sat down in a computer for 3 days, talked to known and left :) In front of all these, I am just a very "normal" geek. I can live hapilly without a computer at times, my current meaning of life has nothing to do with computers, I am interested in other things too, I am getting better and I was never a very extreme personality really, looking natural at first sight. You see? It's very subjective. And I don't blame all these people. If it makes them happy..

The final point is not to define a meter in what is normal or not. Some people might be happy by focusing in just one thing in their life. I can't proove it could never happen. But the most important for myself, is to free my mind and drive it away of all these judgements against my own weird life, because they only confused me more and never helped me,... and think clearly: "What is the thing that I want to do in my life, the one that will make me happy!"

What people said about me, well.. mostly said in a bad way and they degraded my personality, even if there was a point in their sayings. But they didn't really knew the point. These sayings always looked like thoughtless expressions of the common opinion of society. They never tried to know me and help me, just expressing these memes that 99% found true because everybody says it. But they don't know. Well,.. I discovered that I should walk through life alone and only me can judge what's wrong or right in my way..

More babble like this? I should better write an article. They are not funny, they are not insane, just random thoughts thrown upon this thread :(

Btw,. if you see the JapanTetrisFinals video in the URL beelow, you will feel "normal"! It's a bit big to download. (Also, JetLi vs BruceLee has nothing to do, but it's funny and small :)

Something final. It made me angry at the older times to see geeks trying to proove that they are "normal" by showing that they are doing in their life what is supposed to be normal too. The point is not there anyways..

I remember to had read an FC nfo file, where it said, our members goes to the gym, out, most of them have a girlfriend, they listen to music and blabla. Heh..

A magazine reviewing netcafes, said: "Now, you can go to a netcafe and show to the people you are going out to drink some coffe with your friends, while playing online games or surfing the net. Who said that geeks aren't normal?". This one is funny to me and very hypocritical :)

There is an air in their saying (what I always can't explain but only feel), like trying to show that they are normal or inside what is accepted, but seems like they have to say again the words of the common opinion, as a tape recorder, without these words beeing their own. Both the geeks who justifiably try to protect themselfs and the ones who know nothing about who geeks really are but just want to have an opinion upon the matter. In a similar way like when we had to right an essay at school to get a grade, never knew anything about the subject or it was not inside our life, but just coppied and said what the teacher wanted to hear, predictable arguments, the ones of the common opinion, that the 99% of people beleive.

The truth is far away from all these..

Ugh,. I don't like life recipes.

John Carmack has focused a big part of his life in 3d engine coding. He is succesfull in what he does. I don't know if he has life. I don't know if he is happy or not. I would like to hear his opinion. Cause mine is still too confused and I have only flooded you with unreadable text :(

Beeing balanced or not? Who sets the center of balance anyways??? Am I balanced? I go out for coffee with my friends sometimes. I walk a lot, I go to holidays, I am bored of gym, I have no girlfriend, but I am quite talkative sometimes (annoying as here today!). Do I have to stop playing flipper in my Nokia at the coffe store, in order to follow the rules of "normality"? Ugh! Who set up these silly rules of what is right and what is wrong?!? Every judge and this talk seems very stereotype in my eyes! Even my words seem very biased to me, because I had to bare in life through the stereotypes with my own ones. Hell..

Sorry. Thoughts are bursting into my brain. I wanted to close the net but I came back because I remembered more! It's a matter I wish I could give an answer oneday, one to justify every poor. But not through this thread..

Remembering more: Sometimes, I reactivelly act like a weirdo. I was with friends and I was playing GBA but I knew someone would feel weird that I am at my world instead of talking with friends (but I could hear them and reply at the same time, so? ;) and the reaction was predictable. "Hey, leave that thing away. Don't you have a life?!" This made me angry and drove me to play GBA in front of my friends for even more hours just to break their balls and I was saying "Anti-GetALife" opinions once again while playing!!!

the question was:
"how much geek do you consider yourself to be?"

quite simple question.
can't you just answer the question WITHOUT WRITING YOUR ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE STORY?
