i hate it when nutman restraints himself. i'm happy he doesn't do it a lot. nutman, break free. let yourself go. restraints are for conformists!

"we've decided to cancel the theme graphics competition because of a notable decline in both quantity and quality of entries over the last few years - it just seems like there's no significant interest."

did you started to talk about the quality before or after you found out that you werent able to decide about a theme 4 weeks before the party starts?

scamp: Great news! I'll start making my entry now :)

(also my condolences to theme graphics fans.. but it's really nice to have a "coder" competition since even 4k intros have become group efforts now)

xenusion, it's been a subject for a long time, and fwiw, we did decide on a theme: it would've been "This is NOT a drill!" (weird emergencies/catastrophes etc).

honestly, why do so many people believe we're lazy/stupid/both? hint: if we didn't give a fuck, we simply wouldn't organize a party in the first place.

somewhat related point: if we had specs for the compo machines, we would post them on the website. things will NOT go any faster because you send us an email nagging about it.

ok.
to bad then... ive checked the website several times while waiting for the theme.
now we have another code compo with questionable results

why dont you just draw a drill and whack it in the regular gfx compo.. it's not that the quality/quantity there is so much more higher there

Can't someone run an unofficial theme graphics compo if they really want to?
xenusion: you can just organize an unofficial compo if you wish.

The scene definitely has a problem in regards of gfx artists. Their number is low, and motivation seem to be even lower - most scene gfx artists seem to prefer fora and competitions outside of the scene these days.

Simply killing the competitions and giving up on it is not what we are going to do. We did however have not enough time to create a new master plan. We definitely need to find out what we can do to make gfx competitions more attractive. We need a survey on this, and we are going to hold it after this Breakpoint. While it's too late to announce some radical new form of gfx compo 4 weeks prior to the party, we are very interested in suggestions on what could be done to attract more gfx artists taking part in compos again.

There is one positive side about the theme gfx being cancelled: The prize money of it will go into the freestyle gfx competition. In the background we are also working on a few things to possibly make the freestyle gfx compo more attractive.

What about my question?

No one likes me :(

xernobyl: In case this really was supposed to be a serious question, here is the relayed answer of the gfx compo orga: "According to the rules, typical photo retouching steps like contrast changes etc are OK, especially if they could also be achieved the analog way. As you have submit the original foto together with your entry anyway, we'll be able to easily see who's stretching the rules too far".

Do competitions of a certain specialized kind get more people interested in those involved in the demoscene?

What defines the attractiveness of such competitions?

Is participation to specialist competitions a proper indication for the health of the respective activity inside the scene?

rarefluid, that one's in since 1993 and it's called "demo compo".

i must say i agree with xen on his last remark, way too many compos for coders and ever less compos for graphicians, even though there arent that many good and active graphicians in the scene and i guess the quality of the compos also quite reflect that, i still found themed compos alore more fun and overall fair (considering some factors of time and avoiding the tits and dragons cliches) then the typical standard graphics compo. but well, it always depends on the theme itself and on who bothers doing something for it this time around.

despite maali's suggestion being somewhat retarded and completly off the point in question, i think i will try to do some graphics about drills and submit it to the regular graphics compo :) come to think about it since i mostly do vector friendly stuff i could also submit it for the 4k graphics thing.. we'll see how it goes timewise..
