Macbook Air Comparison

category: general [glöplog]
better buy a m1330 - WOW 2 usb ports (that's still VERY few imho), ETHERNET PORT!, fancy blue touch keys, 160 gb hdd, nv8400gs, max 4gb ram, 2 x snd out, 1x mic port, optical drive, thin fancy display, sd mmc ... card reader thingy (i don't use that anyways...), firewire, hdmi, vga, remote control, fingerprint shit... and from the money you did not spent for the macbook air you still can buy a really nice logitech vx nano mouse (kicks ass imho). ubuntu & winxp work great. Uhh and yeah there's also wlan! macbook air sucks.

las: i have one on order already actually. cost only £760 inc delivery+vat thanks to the january sale, and that's with some minor upgrades (better battery and the led screen). that's damn cheap imo. :)

dells are for dorks (worked with 2, 1 in the xps series and an inspiron 9400 and both were troublesome, stupid looking, preinstalled with horrible crap, had problems with their sleep functions and lets not even get started about the laughable battery power)

I don't like dells either. I have a £3k dell workstation at work, it's OK but there are a lot of flaws. Particularly the sound - it's the worst sounding, most hissy PC I've used. HP seem better, so we've switched to them for the last year or two. If I was ordering a new workstation though, I'd go for a mac pro even if it was purely as a windows box - the price is pretty similar but the build quality is miles better on the apple box.

The thing that really amazes me with apple though is their marketing, not their hardware. The macbook air is being discussed everywhere, it even makes the national news. Why? It's just another laptop! When was the last time the latest dell or hp laptop was major news? They're bigger companies too. And we have a 50+ post thread here discussing it, even though it's not a good machine for demos, nor in any way relevant to the scene.

the dell was the cheapest, smallest laptop around with a proper gfxcard and by a half decent manufacturer - thats why i got it.
if you need something small and portable that also has reasonable graphics hardware (i.e. not intel) and doesnt require a remorgage, you're limited to a very, very small number of machines (believe me, i looked around a lot) - and none of them are macs. :)

small laptops just arent meant to be crammed with 8800gt videocards, yet

i know that's a hassle but as long as the majority of small laptop users are flashy businessmen in armani suits and people like me who use them to browse the web and watch dated seinfeld episodes..

.. nobody's gonna invest in making that 8800gt you want any smaller

dell vostro 1500 \o/ - 8600M GT ftw! Also, the 1-business-day support is the excellent :)

- only real problem is not being able to connect via dvi... and no docking-station :(

i wish i was a flashy businessman in an armani suit instead of actually having to code stuff behind a desk

hmpf, now i'm depressed by my own characterization of a macbook air user.

neils: me too, i wish i didnt _need_ a laptop that i could code on.
time to become a producer.

smash: don't let my criticism of dell put you off, they're still good pcs overall. There's not really much difference between them and any of the other manufacturers.. it's just that you notice the difference a lot more when you have a thousand of them ;)

or a tech. consultant. come in, tell people what they're doing wrong, how to do it right, strike up tens of thousands of dollars and head back to the hotel bar.

I had a rough time deciding between the dell m1330 and the macbook but after reading some reviews about the m1330 i realized it was a very budgetish (non polished) product. Smash: better get an empty CD ready ;-)

What I liked about dell is how after I got an issue with a faulty cpu (on my personally bought laptop) they just came at my workplace and changed the cpu on the spot.

i like hp support :

once upon a time i tried to flash my phoenix bios with a version modded by myself (reckless am i), of course it failed, the ultimate bios rescue process never succeeded, so i brought my bricked craptop back to hp support (without mentioning the part where i lamentably tried to hax0r the bios) and in order to restore the bios or the ROM chip... they have replaced the *whole* mobo o_O and now i can browse pouet again on my wc \o/

Macs are sleek and pretty.

Thinkpads are rugged and handsome.

See, it's that simple.

doom: dells are handsome, vaios are pretty. thinkpads just look like briefcases, no tastes there.

stefan: it wasn't a conscious choice, it was given by her company :)
dells? handsome?

They're as handsomel as a shopping mall in the middle of the european countryside can be.

Thinkpads just look geeky to me. Dells.. well, the business ones look OK to me, much better than HPs which just look bland but cheap. A lot of the consumer ones look like toys though, like a really cheap ipod copy for kids or something.

Hehe.. the R series is NOT what I mean by handsome. :) They really messed up when they did the R series. The X series, on the other hand, is beautiful:

T series is also awesome:
