att phoenix: da hornet rave-dvd :)

category: general [glöplog]

heh, got a bit inspired by haujobb's latest, and had a small psychedelic dos-session (I quit when I started to feel sick hehe), and it struck me that the hornet demo-dvd really needs a rave/psychedelic demos section! imagine that on a huge tv-set and massive hi-fi at a party! :)

include kromiset/mfx, vihreät lehmät/mfx, within minutes/mfx, xaos/mist, kosmiset/haujobb etc ;)

Heylo.. hmm, kinda like public email here :).

Well, side one of the DVD will be modern "eye-candy" stuff to appeal sceners and non-sceners alike. So that can definitely include the psychedelic rave type stuff. We will have a page where people can vote for what they'd like to see on the DVD.

Actually, you know what would be cool.. a "mix" video, maybe half an hour or so, including stuff like within minutes, saint, etc. where the sound & video are mixed into each other. Whoever wants to steal that idea can do so. :)

btw, phoenix: how are you recording old pc demos? are you using a graphics card in the "oldschool pc" with a tv out or is there a way to capture directly via the vga port (probably not :)?

The technical stuff is Trixter's department. You can either email him (trixter@oldskool.org) or wait for the web page to go up (er.. should be coming along :).

Old PC demos are the hardest thing in the world to capture because PC demos don't output at any television standard in the world. 70fps, 67fps, 55fps... it's maddening. How do you convert it to 60fps, or 50fps, for display on a television without dropping frames? Answer: You can't. I have many tricks up my sleeve, but some demos simply will not look smooth and there's nothing anyone in the world can do about it (unless you have $$$ and a year of R&D).

The good news is that when my tricks work, they work perfectly -- it's an all or nothing operation. Even the demos that don't work okay will only look bad in the scrollers. And all of the modern "eye-candy" demos look fantastic because I can lock Windows to a 59.97 (NTSC) output rate.

All this and more will be on the website... soon...

Hmm.. can't wait to see that web page. Just one question: Have you ever got X14 to work?

melw: Yes, X14 works on my P2-450/Win98 under a clean DOS boot. (still have my gus!) It even plays all the way to the end logo; on all my previous machines it crashed somewhere before the end. We have a variety of old PCs for the DemoDVD project, so the only real limitation should be how easy they convert to video (see Trixter's post).

Just announcing that the DemoDVD (NOT the "rave-dvd" :) webpage is up at www.demodvd.org, so check it out. The survey is up now too.

after reading the 'features'-section of the page, I'm confident that the demodvd is gonna be a kickass production. looking forward to it...

Well, X14 works perfectly on my 486, but if you can include it to DemoDVD you'll have at least one people buying it from Finland. :)

(Ok, I'll have to get it anyways, just don't forget to include X14, Inside, Caero, STV, Megablast, Paimen, Into the Dark, From My Heart, Innuendo, Stars... )

Tell us what you want to see on the survey at http://www.demodvd.org/survey ! That will work much better :).

hey phoenix&trixter, will you do an invitelist for graphicians to do the dvdmenus ? :) or do you have artists ready to start working already ?

or maybe make a poll for us (the potential buyers) so we can vote for someone you could ask ?

anyways, great idea, i will most definatly get it when you're done with it

oh, one more thing while we're at it..

which platforms will the dvd feature?

would be a shame not to include amiga, atari etc.
and also if possible some glimpse into console demos would be superb

We expect much of our graphics/design to be done by our own group artist (Stony). However, stuff like the menus has yet to be worked on, so if we need more people for it we'll ask. :)

For your next question, refer to the FAQ at www.demodvd.org, specifically

Short answer: PC.

ok, read everything there is to read on the site :)

still, if demodvd issue#1 sells profitable, will there perhaps be an issue devoted to oldskool platforms?
added on the 2001-07-12 07:22:06 by jelly jelly
Did you really read everything? :) The answer to that is at
http://www.demodvd.org/faq/FlexQuestion994579542
Short answer: Yes.

BTW, the site has a new design now! OK, fractalgp? :)
