Hi there peeps,
I've just finished programming a beat for my seriously outdated myspace page and after listening to it with winamp's visualisations on I thought it *might* be cool in an abstract demo (as long as you're not fussy about the clunky mp3 format).
It's an aggressive, rough-as-fuck chopped-up hiphop/jazzfunk workout, about 2 and a half minutes long - on the same tip as early MF Doom / Ninja Tune material. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're into that sort of sound then you might appreciate it. Some of the scene demo's I've seen over the past couple of years have had a similar hiphop sound, so I thought of posting it up here.

In fact that first one kinda reminded me of Live Evil by Mandula meets Halfsome by Fairlight...or at least something like those two :)

I liked "rawelements" more, I am missing some real scratching in the first track :)
Anyway, hard to "judge" the tracks without knowing the raw material (i.e. how much you added and what is "just a sample").
Is the retrogamer mag a project of yours ? looks interesting, I think I'll have a look at it :)

Conspiricybreaks (or conspirAcybreaks?) - pretty cool, but not much variation (I'm missing a lead instrument apart from the trumpet-chop) and the mix has absolutely _no_ bass. Also; the fill-in part around 02:05 is clearly just one long sample, and it sticks out like a hot girl at a demoparty.
Rawelements: A bit of the same "missing bass"-problem as the above. My problem with this tune is that it sounds eerily like you used a sample-CD construction kit and that you haven't produced any of the sounds yourself. Feel free to prove me wrong though.

Which program do you use?
You should definately add more own elements to the samples you are using, e.g. an own lead melody or to underline gloom, an own bass-line. It all sounds quite good already (sometimes a bit too glued together like the use of the snaredrumfill which is a bit offbeat when you play it twice) but suffers from lack of variation. Thanks for posting your stuff here, you should also try the music showroom at bitfellas.org.

First of all, I have to say that I'm no musician. The suggestion that the 'tracks' were built with sample CD's is almost correct - I'm a Funk/Soul/Beats/Hiphop DJ based in the southwest of the UK, and after 10 years of vinyl I've begun the slow and labourious transition to CDJ and in the process of recording my old vinyl over to my PC (40GB so far...) I've been saving samples up and messing around with them in fruityloops and cooledit. I have no intention of formally 'releasing' or attempting to sell my work - these were done just for fun and because I wanted some of my own breaks to use in my DJ sets and in the local radio show I'm starting in mid feb.
Conspiricy Beats - The drum loop here is lifted straight from Kool & The Gang, and the snare rolls/horns/2.05 break are all from some odd nujazz record that I never play (and can't remember the name of - I'm at work a the mo').
Raw Elements - This is essentially an instrumental reworking of Ann Alford's 'Gotta Get Me A Job', a rare funk track. All I did here is strip out the few bits without any vocals (mainly the intro) rearranged them and overlaid and chopped up some extra percussion from various sources (namely The New Mastersounds, Steady Diggin Workshop and Opensouls). It sounds pretty good when compared to/mixed with the source material - it's clearly identifiable, yet structured completely differently.
The production on both is intentionally loose/sloppy because I wanted it to sound as raw as possible - like they were put together on an MPC. I would love to add some extra instrumentation to make these into proper tracks (rather than just beats), but as I said above, I'm really a DJ rather than producer - I'm much better at playing other people's music ;) I just thought I'd post these here incase someone was interested.
