How about someone coding a cool and fast PC2PC emulator, especially for demos we can never see again?

It'll probably happen - it's been recoded for just about
everything else. Then there's the DemoDVD...

we need a VMWare with support for Vesa2 and Gus =)

I wonder, am I the only one in here who can still see these demos? Just make a dos boot disk guys, simple as that ... works for me anyway :)

nuclear: it just doesn't work for me and almost everybody i know. I still use my 486 just to watch this one.

no, but if anyone is crazy enough to port all the Xtacy demos to win32, I'm all ears.

well..I got a mpeg/DivX link here, in case someone want to download it
btw: I used a bootdisk too, works fine =D

Second reality works fine with me too. But what about other demos? E.g. Halcyon demos..
Though, I bought 386 and 486 motherboard & CPU these days! I will build a second computer with these and other hardware I will get from friends to watch old stuff and try asm bits there! :)
I only need a GUS now...

I like Optimus's idea. I've wished for years now for a decent PC emulator for PC's (with processor + hardware settings). I personally think that re-writing old demos is wasted effort (unless you enjoy it), that could have instead gone towards an emulator.

As far as I know, the closest thing in existence is Bochs, but that doesn't cut it, and in my opinion seems to be in enough of a sorry state that I'd find it more promising if someone started a new one from scratch. If someone with emulator writing experience gives this a go, I'd be interested in helping out.. hell, I'd even like this just so I can run my old code!

Second Reality will be on the MindCandy DVD (aka the DemoDVD), for certain. Fans of the demo will get some cool extra surprises as well.

(for the record, I can still get it running on my PC)

As some of you mentioned, the best thing is to have an old PC for these demos. I wouldn't be able to live without watching "Lifeforms" by Halcyon atleast once a month. :)

Second Reality for windows would be nice, at least for newbies without dos or for very powerful machines on that the dos version maybe refuses to run. Same for Xtacy demos (I like nearly all their demos and I can still watch the stuff from my dos partition with gus sound). But windows version will probably not give the same feeling like the original.

i wonder how many ports of this have been done so far. i only know of the great c64 port which blew me away just as the dos demo did (but more for the technical reason).
i like to consider second reality <flamewar armor> one of the best demos ever </flamewar armor>, so it's kinda reference for me. how about a porting contest? i like to see a port (or at least a try) to do this for example on the great hardware of the gameboy advance.
Newbies can watch desert dreams on the WinUAE and get the same feeling. Why not to put the effort in something else? (even tho a clean dos boot does the job most of the times... at least here).

Not just Second Reality but also Caero would be nice for windows. I can't wait for the DemoDVD :)
Yes, Caero is another candidate that is nearly impossible to run on a faster machine. My last success to run it must be when I had my Pentium-133 or something like this.

If you run Caero and you get music but no visuals, wait! On my TBird 1.4, the intro credits don't show, but the tunnel/vortex and everything after that appear fine.
