Seen in Static Line #45, about fr-025:
"The movements of the dancers are very realistic, at first I thought it was done with motion capturing but the credits mention bones, so I'm not sure."

They motion captured this:
He meaned sceletal animation or anything? And what is it???

Normal practice is to create a model, add bones to it, and then motion capture a person (or monkey, if you're on a tight budget, tho the results aren't so good)
The motion capture data is usually from fixed points on the body (head, shoulders, elbows, hands etc.), and that data is mapped to the ends of the correct bones (eg. hand data is mapped to the target of the lower arm bone)
So yes, it's skeletal animation, combined with motion capture.

It is extremly expensive to rent a mocap rig.
It's more likley that soemthing like Character Studio was used with good ol' .BIP motion sequenced together files.
Either way, very nice results.

Actually mocap is not that expensive. All you need is at least two video cameras, however, three or four can do a better job, and a mocap software like MatchMover. Additionally, you need some walls, covered with canvas, some black stretch outfit, and two dozen pingpong balls to be used as markers. Yes, renting a professional mocap studio costs a fortune, but who makes family videos with IMAX? :)
to clear up the fr-popular demo rumour here at least:
They did NOT use mocap...but a very good animation designer called 'Sarah Hill' (compare the credits!) who works freelancer like for several customers needing animations similar to this...like for games, commercials etc...
She seems to be pretty very good in his job...as you already saw it in the demo! ;-)
Really _nice_ job !!

what? the movements in fr-25 is so fuckn ugly we laughed so much we couldnt breathe at my friends place some time ago when we watched it... or maybe its just a superhackednerd who thinks thats how its supposed to be
dubmood: ever tried doing skeletonanimations byhand ? i guess not, ever tried making a demo with skeletonanimations at all? i guess not, you are stupid and really have no clue.
i hate to say this but, i must agree with dubmood... the movements weren't very lively, no matter if it's hard to do by hand or not :-)
dubmood, rasmus:
If you think you can do it better...Just Do It !! ;-)
Guess scene would definitely like to see the 'first _real_ realistic skeleton-by-hand-animation ever' in a mindblasting demo...!!
There's _your_ fame...waiting for !!!
So GO for it !!
...or at least do something 'similar' (bad) as well!! ;-)

Hm okay, my actual point was the whole quote was stupid because the original writer thought "bones" are incompatible with "motion capturing". Never mind. :)
I know/knew that... ;-)
But who cares...(as you can see here!) ;-DD

weasel: get a hobby, just because i can't do better bones than <insert some 3d sceners name here> doesn't necesserily mean that <insert the same 3d sceners name here> is a good 3d artist nor does it imply that the output of <insert the same 3d sceners name once again> is worth the look.
Well, and 'just ragging' about something is surely _always_ easier than having _facts_ or maybe _constructive suggestions_ on how to do it better the next time, right? ;-)
Oh well...
Oh well...
i suggest everybody to shut the fuck up.
I refuse to shut up! (but I don't care about the thread either)
It was just a suggestion.
