zipfiles

category: general [glöplog]
we need some standard. either zip your files in such a way so that a dir is created with "extract here" or there is no dir info in the zip so that "extract to [filename w/o ext.=dir]" gets u one (1) dir with the files. u know what i mean.
i prefer extract to [filename]

Funny, I was thinking about this just yesterday. I don't think everyone will just be able to decide between one or the other for everything... just look before you 'select all' and 'extract to' :)

"once you grow older, you will see that there are much more important problems in life", some wise men once said.
however i agree with your preference

messy zip-contents don't bother me much .. i always unzip the files in a special folder.

I always look inside the zip before unzipping, it's safer :P

I generally unpack all the demos I download to their own folders... it seems more often than not the programs aren't put in their own directory before being zipped.

just extract to c:\tmp -- that way you will never forget to delete the files afterwards!
the convention seems to be: directory/foo.exe for tarballs and just foo.exe for .zip files.

I stick to that.

is it really a PROBLEM to get like [...]\demos\some_dull_demo\some_dull_demo ?
the extracted files are only temp, atleast for me...

Good demos will be ruined by people wasting time arguing over this... Just stick all the files in a zip, and stop fannying about.

ok

just use winrar, open the zip, doubleclick the exe, everything is unpacked into a temporary directory, after the demo ends, all temp. files will be deleted automaticly.

easy?
yes.

Or how about demos coming as an .exe, which when run installs the demo, copies a load of MFC dlls into windows dir, dumps a load of shit in the registry, and then still doesn't run???

Give me a bootable floppy any day.

I use windows/midnight commander so I can view the .zip just like a directory and copy it where I want.

The way it used to work is that when we had a demo that was in a zipfile and that when expanding it spawned like 50 files and 4 directories, we just knew this was some lame production.

So yes, zipfiles do suck.

The worst ones just have 50 files, and the exe has an icon that looks like all the other icons in the folder.

I had a few of those recently... think i'll dig them out and thumb them down.

I never publicly released a demo, because I don't have the skills to make some really good 5 minute demos, but already I can tell you that even myself, I can make a pack file to accompany the demo. So, the lazy arses that can't simplify the audience's life by squeezing everything in the EXE or in a PAK file don't earn my thumbs up.

That's true, 33. They don't deserve it. Only you do. So take your thumb up and stick it up where the sun don't shine. Like if anyone cares what you think.

I don't unzip.
I use Winrar.
Winrar allows you to open a zip/rar/ace/whatever, click on the exe, then it unzips to a temp directory, runs the demo, and cleans up afterwards.
So I just keep the zipfiles stored in a demos-directory, I don't need to store the unzipped versions. Saves lots of space :)

and thoralez already said that... somehow I scrolled over that... :)

moT also uses winrar in the very same manner.

I also use winrar the same manner, and of course it's not because moT says he does it like that and that he's a Greek with a pita brain that everyone needs to taste his salsa.

FUCK YOU!
