what graphics card to buy?

category: general [glöplog]
Monstarrs opinion = My opinion :)

I have the 4200 with 64MB, but manufactured by
XFX/PNY and i must say: This one is a rocker!
Everyone who buys a High-Terror-End-GfxCard 2Day
will never bring it to its Limits because 2 Years later
a new Card will be buyed (More Features, DX9 etc...)
So, i dont understand why People buy Cards like a
4600... (AND overclock them,too.... tztztzz....)

Sorry for weird English :) And always remember:

Nvidia seems to be the way to fly nowadays, but I cannot escape the notion that usually demos barf on Matrox and ATI cards for no reason other than the fact that demos are coded a bit more sloppy that say, a commercial thingie like (random game) or 3dmark.

As far as I can tell, ATI usuall spews out pretty nifty hardware, but fails to realize that launching products with functional drivers MIGHT sell more cards.

I'd just wait for when DX9 comes out, then NVidia will launch their DX9-based card, massive price-wars will ensue between NVidia and ATI and we will all end up living in some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland, quite possibly with robots.

anyway, this will also mean the older legacy non-DX9 cards will become dirt cheap.

shifter: I haven't had problems with the R8500 drivers anymore, in the last half year or so (in fact, in my own D3D-experience, they are closer to refrast than my GF2 drivers)... and R9700 drivers are reported to be quite mature aswell. So I'm getting a bit tired of the old "ATi drivers suck" routine.

The main problem I have is that most sceners can't code, and write code that accidentally works on nVidia (try running with D3D in debug mode, a lot of productions will simply fail, or flash the screen all the time or such), or that people use OGL extensions for nVidia, and fail to make a workaround for other cards. For this reason, either the coders need to die, or OGL... or maybe both.

Anything with pixel shaders. My friends got new 4MX but so we couldn't watch demos requiring pixel shaders or the new 3d Mark 2003. How lame ;P

I will personally get a new 3d card when the pixel shaders ones will be very cheap and when I also upgrade my PC. Some BP releases were also very slow and this pissed me off, like they are telling me that my gfx card is for the garbage. Anyways,. I will upgrade oneday, afteralls my main PC has problems with the motherboard too since many things were burned once upon ;P

i want to upgrade so i can make better demo rather than for the sake of these resources greedy demos ;)

i just wonder if this radeon 7000 is any better than gf2/4mx

Everything you say is fine, but where the hell can I find a GF3? I think it was one year ago, when a friend of mine wanted to buy a new card, and we were searching for GF3 because we prefered it from GF4MX, it was the only pixel shader card somehow cheap (GF4 were the other pixel shader cards which were very expensive that time), but found out that GF3 were already shipped away of the market. It wasn't possible to find one, but my friend would prefer that, than the 4MX he got. Of course the 4MX, was good enough for him as he was playing mainly games and there were somewhat less than 1%% of demos needing pixel shaders. But anyways,. in few time pixel shader cards will be sold very cheaper and then everyone will be able to buy. Afteralls, this friend is a fan of raytracing and when I showed him the link to the raytracing hardware (saars or how the hell it was called) he got obsessed with that :)

Forget GF3, you likely won't get *any* of these cards today.
Forget the 7000 since it's pure crap.

Get yourself a Radeon 9000 (I've seen 9000Pro w/ 128MB for about 100Euro) and everything is fine. Maybe a GF4 is a little better, but it's also somewhat more expensive (starting at 150 here)

But I guess if you want to be prepared for the future of games and demos maybe you should grab all the money you have and get a 9700 or 9800
Oh and let me add that since the latest Catalyst drivers my good old 8500 starts to rock *seriously*

this looks interesting as well:

ATI Radeon 9100 w/64MB DDR+DVI+TV out $65
ATI Radeon 9100 w/64MB DDR+DVI+VIVO $72

does it got yer fecking pixelshaader? ;)
and wtf is VIVO?

too lazy to search specifications on the net and study terminology..

definitelly don't buy a MX card... it is pure crap.

You should at least buy an ati radeon 9000 or 9100, it has more funtionnalities.
The nVidia geForceFX 5200 has even more functionnalities, and will make run more of the future demos, and remains at an interresting price too. In performance it is roughly the same as radeon 9000.

If you wish more speed, you might buy a radeon9500, which remains arround 200 250 euros here in france. IMO it is silly to buy a better card since the performance gain doesnt really follows the money you would spend in it.

the radeon 9500 cards are also quite cheap these days, even the 128mb version (160 EUR +)
I actually don't know too much about the 9100 ones, are they limited in some way ?

oh, and ViVo is simply: Video In - Video Out, these cards have both. quite nice.

'kay - so i clearly see 9100 is a better choice than any gf2/4mx tho i'm not sure i can afford this 9100 even it no to mention something costing 200 euro - rough times over here :)

I meant, including the 20,6% of taxes here in france, the geForceFX5200 has AGP 8x, DVI output for 95 euros.

i don't think any other card has a better funtionnality/price ratio, since this card is 100% compliant with Direct3D 9.
