Coders: what hardware are you using?

category: general [glöplog]
I am working on an article for the next issue of ZINE that deals with "The cost of demoscening", specifically; what kind of hardware is required to run todays demos. I would therefore ask all the coders here to tell me what kind of hardware they code on and/or what kind of hardware they see as needed for running their demos.

If you don't feel Pouetizizing, just email me at gloom AT scene.org -- I reserve the right to quote you btw. :)

Core Duo E6600, Gforce 8600GTS, 2gb RAM. I think only the graphics card is overkill for most demos these days, but hopefully that won't be the case soon once people start using shader model 4.
I have a:
Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB
2GB DDRII-800
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.8GHz)

I don't know about my target hardware. Depends on the demo. In the near future, I'd like to explore the world of dx10, so 8th generation nvidia cards would be required.

Duron 1300, 512mb RAM, GeForce 7600 with 256mb vram.
surprisingly it runs nearly all demos really fine, except those that make massive use of the CPU.
it's also my coding platform, which means any better system will run demos/intros coded by me pretty fine :)
but I probably will upgrade within the next time.

Max not more than a 6800GT, Athlon 3700+, 2GB as improving this hardware would be too expensive and uneffective.

why wouldnt the "The cost of demoscening" cover graphic artists costs using specific hardware like tablets etc, and musicians with master controller keyboards etc, or is your artlicle just concerned with the core equpipment for viewing and not outboard equipment ?

earx: ..and what are the specs on that laptop? (graphics card, memory and cpu is what matters)

Pentium M 1.8Ghz, 1GB, ATI Mobility 9700. (shader model 2.0 that is)

ok my bad, you say specificaly the cost of running todays demos, so my post is irrelevant, good luck with the article :)

keito: Because that is not really interesting for most. The article was spawned from the aftermath of the ZINE#12-release (which was percieved as too hardware-hungry by many people).

gloom: and zine 12 ran on a ps1.1 card .. :) i think a lot of the perceived problems with zine 12 comes from a) people with crap hw who usually watch videos not being able to cos it's a diskmag, and moaning, and b) people not reading the info file about being able to turn stuff like dof off and get it to run faster. :)

Then change your article title to something less ambiguous. Demomaking isn't just coding :)

Core Duo 1.83ghz, 1gb ram and geforce 7600gs

I usually target my own hardware maybe a little less, but my hardware is always a few years behind, so it tends to work out.

My system:

Amd Atlhlon Xp 3200+ 1G Ram 9800 Pro 128 @401*790Mhz + Samsung 19" 957mb and XP sp2 :)

No complaints on my best 12 demos collections....still runs great !!!...hehe

1 PLASTIC - 195/95
2 ASD - LIFEFORCE
3 Synesthetics - STS-04: Instant Zen
4 CONSPIRACY - BEYOND
5 Traction - ONWARDS
6 ASD - EVOLUTION OF VISION
7 CONSPIRACY CHAOS control
8 ASD Planet Risk
9 ÜMLAÜT DESIGN - STRUCTURE2
10 FARBRAUSCH - DEBRIS
11 FAIRLIGHT CHEGUEVARA
12 COCOON - COMA

+50FPs at 1024*768...my old 2003 ATI still holds very well :)
My Athlon64 3000+ (2 GHz), 1 GiB RAM, GeForce 6800 does just fine. The brand-new notebook with a Core 2 Duo T7300 (2 GHz), 2 GiB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT is OK too, but it has some issues with sound and/or graphics drivers, it seems. (read: "Lifeforce" runs much better on the older machine ;)

the costs are friggin low. Just DL the stuff in movie format. My 933 Mhz ibook runs most of the demos suprisingly well. not to mention the dirt-cheap divx players out there... you need only a cd/dvd burner.
