keops, if there is a "secret marketing division" inside fb it must be so secret that even i don't know about it - but yeah, they do a great job ;)
Interestingly, we had real high up officials from the Finnish government's Ministry of education and Ministry of trade (unfortunately, nobody from the Ministry of Funny Walks =)).
It was their first time at ASM, and you could literally see their jaws drop when they saw the party place. We then toured and I brought them to the Scenebooth to experience demos first hand. We then watched Debris and I saw jaws drop again.
They were literally quite blown away. Probably they'd been as blown away by LifeForce too, but I guess their clincher that made them understand just how awesome demos are, was the size of Debris. People outside of the scene need simplification of what makes demos so great. Comparing Debris to the size of a small Word document just drove the point of "demos are cool" home.
I guess that is the same effect that is somewhat at work with Farbrausch's popularity. The size of the entries underscores what is so outstanding about them.

But well, I kinda agree with the fact that the remaining point about demo'ing breakthrough performance is size nowadays. Size does matter, and that's the impressive side and "marketing" argument among the non-scenish population.
It was a time when we used to be impressed by rotozooming and all that stuff.
In 2001+, when I was showing the Farbrausch intro to my workmates, the first thing I was saying was : "it's only 64kb" and of course all of them were wondering how FR had been able to packed all the content in such a small file...
The lethal words were : "they don't"...
However, we are more or less (me) part of the scene here and maybe I'm naïve, but I think that size matter ain't impressive anymore even for Debris. We all know (almost?) why Debris is only 180kb. No streaming music, generated textures, and all those kind of things I'm not an expert in.
Otherwise, it would have been the usual 5 or 6 Mbytes. Probably.
What I mean is that it would be fine for the scene and outside peoples to get impressed by the inside, not the outside. By the content. I must say that both Debris and LifeForce have a strong yet very different content and got that particular "Wow" effect.
I dunno why I've been very much more impressed by Lifeforce though.
More than for Debris I mean. Debris is awesome in every aspect but I also remember there has been a huge "buzz" effect and I still don't know why. I was on the stream during the BP, on the IRC, on Pouet (this was a so bad weekend far from there:) and it was like people got completely crazy. The main argument was -again-... the size.
I remember a post on the IRC which was "Eh guys, they have teh softsynth, the tool, the everything to do that"! (which DOESNT MEAN that makes the thing easy!)
So, after this wise point, only the content remains. Make your choice!

Hm, in my case most nowadays so called programmers think they rule the world, are the best programmers and don't really know much about it. Sometimes when they have no solution I still code sensless things for them, just for helping or try to find an algorithm for their problem. Then mostly the question appers. Where did you learn to code/think like this. (An ironic fact is that I was working as a "stacker driver" in my actual scene times. :)
Most of them can't understand it and if you show them some old scene stuff they still don't really understand. They don't beleive it's true what I'm telling them. So I can show it with some actual demos. There begins the cost free promotion marketing for asd, cns, equinox (wich most still don't understand), fr, sts...lots of others as a didn't code any actual one. :D
Also it's an easy way to find like minded people, what really does not happen very often. The clue of the scene will for ever be a secret for them. They can't imagine to use a computer to make some competitive art in any kind like the scene does. (no rules, no measures just some ill braines that work harmonic together.) If you ask them "try to code some kind of primitive arkanoid in 15 min. in any computer language you prefer." They just think you are crazy.
I've spend some of the best times in my life with sceners. Scene seems to have changed a lot as everything on this little strange planet, too. So I think this chart or competitive promoting thinking is just a modern side effect that grows constantly with the scene itself. (as everybody wants to be a part of it:)

well, ok. Optimus lives, but the answer was too long to be true. Teh.popular.pingu pretty much sums up the answers that i want :)). And as i'm considered a n00b in the pc-scene forums, i can also make st0pid comments. This this place is definitely sold out.
oxb: well, i (like to :) think that debris actually holds up as a demo, regardless of its size. in all my 64ks there are some parts where i mentally cringe and think "ugh, but well, it's 64k, it's okay". when showing it to non-scene friends, i normally don't even mention the size (unless i'm asked), because for debris it doesn't say anything fundamental about the demo, it's really just a number.
of course the size is what probably impresses non-sceners the most about it, but i hope that at least in the scene, the main factor is that debris is a nice demo (and works as such), and the size is "added value" for those who care. it certainly is not central to the work of art that debris strives to be (though it probably is when looking only at the technical aspects).

When I show some productions to non-demo-collecting-friends, there's one groupname they always remember: Farbrausch. And when they go to Pouet to download some demos they will likely enter this as their first search phrase...
Here are some "reasons why" I observed...
- It sounds like a brand name
- It can be easily remembered
- Non-germans instantly think of "german precision" or "technique" when they are hearing such a name... it's the same with "Kraftwerk" (or "Autobahn" if you remember Big Lebowski :-) ) and thus they likelythink of technical superior demos
- and in a kind of snowball effect: they will observe that there are already a lot of productions from Farbrausch in the top ten... so they will download these first.
- and finally: a surprisingly large number of friends indeed know "kkrieger" and are eager to download additional stuff from Farbrausch
But back to the topic: I would really like to see ASD in the top ten with their demos. I understand that some people can't relate to this free-flowing, emotional style of ASD's demos. All I can say is, I love both styles and therefore love both demos: Debris AND Lifeforce. Strange enough, this seems to put me into a minority these days :-). I'm just glad that we got these two milestone demos in one year and you can clearly see that a shitload of thoughts, dedication and hard code went into both demos. Big thumbs for that!!!

I remember enough people in the immediate aftermath of Breakpoint saying "Shit, I didn't realise it was 180K..." to show that it does stand up as a first-rate demo regardless of its size. (I wouldn't disagree that the size is quite probably what propelled it into the all-time top, though)
Zplex: Yeah, that "fantastic" intro is my crappy piece of shit. Its just a school project, nothing more. I am quite shame about it, so it was never released on pouet or so :-)
