The future of pouët.net
category: general [glöplog]
Nah, that would be stupid ;p
give more glöps för UD points!
i hope this wasn't suggested already, as i didn't read through everything that's written above.
i'd say, a more refined search result would be important too, like giving out similar results once one misspelled something.
and probably an extended search for specific years would be cool too.(i.e. values could be: atari | 1993 or c64 | 1989)

facts:
1. Glops rulez
2. JavaScript rulez (http://bricks.bsector.cjb.net ;-)
3. Flash SUCKS
4. Popups SUCKS
5. Mozilla rulez (http://www.mozilla.org)
conclusion: Keep glops, add JS if you like, avoid Flash and Popups like hell and lastly try to not loose 100%compatibility with Mozilla which is available for many many platforms (you can also use some Mozilla extensions, for example the sidebar which is a cool tool - take a look at Netscape's devcenter on how todo that :-) and also not to make Pouet.net a Mozilla-only site (it's just an "if" in JavaScript))

hmm i wonder how's the admin tool developement progressing...
reset the glöps :D
Hmm,. reset not remove? Start glopping from the beginning??? That would be even more pointless ;P
Seriously now, if the point of the glops is a motivation to submit productions, then I agree with an older idea of some other people, not giving glops for writting comments (because everyone can write something simple like cool/suxx/ok only for getting 1 glop each day), but only for submit prods, nfo files, screenshots. And I don't say to get some benefit, since a lot of my glops have been gained by the comments, it's just that I agree with "no glops for comments", no matter if I might get out of the top10 list with this change. (Would be fun to reach back then ;)

I really don't know how many glops will I have without the comments. These will be the Real glops! How much I participated at updating the database. I'd like to see the changes with other people too. Other than that, it's a more right thing concerning the meaning of the glops and this time I agree removing the comments glops (How strange?) and keeping only the precious ones, if other people agree too. Then I'd also have more motivation to update the database, instead of gaining glops by just commenting on prods..
I remembered another feature someone asked. Don't know if it is easy or possible to be adapted on pouet but it will be the most interesting of all I beleive. When I will click on a sceners nick, I will get not just the glops/latest prods added and stuff, but also the prods on Pouet in which the scener has participated, as graphist, musician, coder or anything. It would be interesting to see in which demos has a scener in pouet beeing active. Something like the thing that is happening on http://noname.c64.org/csdb/
Go there and click on a demo at the top10 and then click at a scener in the credits and you will see more credits for more demos at his own profile (and specifically if he did code, gfx or music for that demo). There could such a think be added in Pouet and every single scener would add his own credits on the prods that exist on pouet and has worked upon. You may say that some people might add their own credits for famous productions where they haven't worked at, but how has it worked in CSDb? What do you say??? Someone asked this and I thought it would be the most interesting function..

interesting that i just now read that nanook shares the same idea, just some lines above me. =)
that basically makes 2 people that vote for a better search engine, which will definately result in having a better world.

The sceners data linked with prods was there when pouet was not even online. But I thought it was a bad idea for 3 reasons:
- it would make it slower than it is.
- it would be much mre complicated to submit good prod information -> less prods submited
- old demos would have missed many information about the scener, seeing how hard it is now even for release/party info.
Pouet is now faster, thanks to scene.org =) some changes have been done (see the http://www.pouet.net/changelog.php for details) and I'm planning to do this in the incoming hours/days:
- Better looking party page now that it's usable and that you can post party info on already submitted prods
- Better search engine, I know it sux, but at least it's there =) I plan to improve it a little.
- Public syndication (it already exists for the big ones like ojuice, I'll export some RSS/XNFO/XML thingies for all of you)
- Better looking BBS/comments, I don't know why but I think it's ugly to read :/
- XHTML1.1/CSS2 (btw, I'm using Phoenix, so no worries about an IE-only website)
Today I think I've removed all the latest long-loading pages, but I might've forgot one, just tell me if that's the case.
And a great thank to redhound for its perfect upgrade, I'm glad pouet.net is running on a Debian GNU/Linux btw ^^

Nice one Analogue!
I just noticed the thread pages of the BBS were way too long ! =)
I'll split them up tomorrow
I'll split them up tomorrow
why the splitting? I already didn't get the point on the prod comments and I don't see it either in the bbs
splitting is ok for me as long as we can still see everything.

a suggestion,
why only include the last 10 comments on the user page ?
some people still have nice things to say and write very interesting comments about demos.
why should we first search for a demo and then for a comment when we can look directly for comments written by a specific user ?
I probably want pouet to look like it was 3 years ago :P

damn, even splitting the bbs,
at least provide a search feature to look for a specific topic so that we don't have to look for 32 pages of bbs topics,
or provide a daily gzipped sql-dump of the bbs post&topic table(s) :P
splitting the oneliner history is stupid also, just drop the oneliner history, who really wants to read 3 years old onelines ?
or i'm maybe asking too much things,
well continue maintaining the website analogue :P

It would be nice if there were a friends and foes system ala Slashdot that would moderate the ranking of a users post based on their own rating. This would allow users to moderate on their own posts they would like to see and drop the lame trolls down to the bottom of the barrel.
It might actually make Pouet message boards worth reading again. =)

Well, I know this Greek scener...
Well, I know this Greek scener...
*drumroll*
The search feature for the BBS is already in.
Splitting the BBS is needed to prevent those 500Kb pages, maybe I'll add an option to choose how many you wanna see (like for the comments) on all the splitted pages.

Sagacity: i'm pretty sure that particular scener already knows it by hearth, so no use for that either :)
Some things i'd like to see:
1. A prefs page where i can set the number of posts/comments to view on a page
2. List of sceners involved in a prod (i know this isn't very practical for current/past prods, but if people start using xnfo, it could be imported from that pretty easy in future)
3. Yes, glops for adding prods/infos/etc only! Force optimus to work for his glops!
4. Remove pictures from comments/bbs posts - keep the link to image feature. Having gay porn appear on my work computer is not a good thing!

Also only allow logged in users to see email addresses! I've actually received spam to the address i use here already.
That would be very appreciated feature
