MS Demoscene 2007 Home Edition Service Pack 2
category: general [glöplog]
I don't know the exact details and what one is exactly allowed to do or not. If you have some, feel free to share, it might change my mind about doing a 360 demo (with a real SDK/Devkit, not with that XNA crap)
I can find out from the source. It'll take a few days..
Ah, good, looking forward to know an official version from the source :)
actually by source I mean some developers - I don't have any dealings with microsoft themselves. So my information might well be urban legends ..

I never thought about that...
Huh. No offense, but you'd think people working in game development get this "no unauthorized use of SDK material" stuff whacked into their heads pretty much at day #1.
Keops pretty much covered the story. It's all about the console manufacturer trying to maintain whatever image they want for their business. It was (and still is) not uncommon for game developers to get a list of requirements they must meet before even being considered worthy of getting an SDK.
I guess I was the exception then ;-)
Not exactly related...

The Big N has announced the beginning of a search for the next ingeniously ground-breaking video game. At a private developers conference, Nintendo has introduction WiiWare, a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel.
What Nintendo have highlighted as an especially positive about the service is that it paves the way for smaller, more creative games from indie developers to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any financial risk to developers. Nintendo are hoping that combined with the unique controls provided by the Wii, developers will be able to make truly fresh new games through this inexpensive and simple new service.
"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."
WiiWare titles will be posted on the Wii Shop Channel from the beginning of next year. As with current Wii Shop Channel offerings, users will redeem Wii Points to download content. No news on pricing options or actual WiiWare games as yet - Nintendo are saving those for a later date.
I thought it was about control and respect. A way to reassert the game developers it's not their platform, only the manufacturers. Long are the days when accolade reversed and made games for the megadrive, unauthorized. Or even EA.
...yeah, that post made no sense :)
xernobyl: I was toying with that, but as long as we don't really know what the WiiWare formula consists of (and if one can charge 0 wiipoints for their demos), it's yet another press release.

but as soon as there's a possibility to release Wii demos for 0 points our office building's night watch will remember my name for sure ;)
What about "this will never happen?"
I assume distribution is going to be centralized. Something tells me nintendo (the one who can't release AO games) will not risk releasing anything without due approval. And if I were them I wouldn't waste a cent on approving stuff that is going to be delivered for free, when I could be allocating resources on studying + approving monetized releases.

Wiiware sounds interesting, if they would allow demos on it. If they'd allow zero charge, brilliant. If not, I still think it's good if the charge is low (say a couple of euros).
I know paying for demos seems plain wrong, but thinking about it we're all paying for demos somewhere along the line anyway. If I wanted to watch them on a wii, I'd have to pay money to get it chipped, so paying a bit for some demos would be cheaper. And how many paid to watch old demos on mind candy instead of paying money for an old computer or two to do the same?

You pay for the efforts in transfering and editing demos that the guys making the DVD had to do. It's not the same thing as when WiiWare turns out to be the 21st century equivalent of PD floppies with 9 fingers or Protracker being sold for ten bucks.
shifter, are you getting personal here? I'm just wondering.

True, but in the end you're paying some sceners to put the demo on dvd for your convenience or paying nintendo to put the demo on their network for your convenience.
I think PD was great in the day too, prices were pretty reasonable where I live and there was often no other way to get the latest demos other than mail swapping, which wasn't much cheaper after you'd paid for your floppies and postage.
psonice: see, paying for your floppies and postage, that was your mistake right there :D
smash: i always thought something was wrong. My friends all had these blank disks in big boxes, but I bought originals with games on, then formated them. A mate picked up whole sacks of rejects outside some kind of game production factory every morning and sold them on cheap =)
I remember once going into a game shop and there was a massive bin of amiga disks, all blatantly warez with the game names written on in pen - and a "second hand disks, £10 for 10" sign. If you can't beat 'em join 'em eh?

In this scenario, at least we don't need pouet anymore, right guys?
I guess the kickback to the authors will be closer to nil though. I'd sooner buy you a pint at the next demoparty than pay five euros for your initially free demo, where you see nothing short of a nickel.
Shifter: I agree, and the whole idea would suck massively if it was for anything other than a couple of good quality demos on wii that a lot of us would never see otherwise. I'm not saying making make pouet pay per view or anything here! =)
The other thing of course is that demos on the wii network would have a massive audience, which would be good for getting people interested.

I wonder if some well written emails could allow demos on wii. If only I had Mr Iwata's email :D
He's japanese so the chances are he likes good pr0n, so he probably has read "windows 100%" (or what it's called) so he may know the scene!
Demos on any unmodded console would rock. Even software rendering on PS3 linux.

It's a shame Nintendo Of Europe sucks.

Not that I am aware of, but people seem to enjoy finding patterns in my statements that indicate pure, unadulterated evil. Join the rakes & torches crew if you must.

In Bizarro world it would most certainly work :(
Well I was just wondering. It would have made a quite subtle jab.
Still Wii:

Missinterpretation or a little hope?
