Just a little big silly question about voting marks in diskmag charts..

category: general [glöplog]

Let's suppose there are 5 boxes in each category. I have to vote my 5 favorite groups, demos, coders, etc. And also, the first one gets 5 points, the second one gets 4, etc..

What happens if I don't know what to vote and I only give fewer than 5 votes? If I vote only for one graphist for example and all the other 4 fields are left blank. Does he get 5 or 1 point? What does each of the responsible for vote counting in PAiN, HUGi or other mags? Wanna hear your opinion and what would be the best? Perhaps, when someone votes for less than 5/5 people, could there be a system where the scener could also give marks of worth in the people he votes?

It's a secret to everyone.
In Hugi we first did it this way: If you were allowed to fill n places, place 1 got n points, place 2 got n - 1 points etc. If you filled in less than n places, the points for each place were the same: place 1 got n points, place 2 got n - 1 points, etc.

We had a little modification of this rule in some issues. In the scheme above, p(1) = n, p(2) = n - 1, etc., i.e. p(x) = n + 1 - x and delta_p = p(x) - p(x - 1) = 1. In some issues, we did not have a constant delta_p, but a constant proportion p(x) / p(x - 1) = 1.5 (if I remember correctly), and p(1) > n.

Anyway, it has always been like this that you got the maximum points for place 1, etc., even if you filled in less than n places. In my opinion that's sensible because each voter's favourite demo should always get added the same number of points. "One man, one vote (for up to n places)."
