Ripping, cheating and re-releasing at Breakpoint and how we are going to deal with it
category: general [glöplog]
havoc: I've still got about 400 unreplied mails in my inbox that I need to get to. Just checked, nothing with sender "havoc". Resend or let me know when/where to/from which mail adress you've sent it.
scamp: cool- i am not in a hurry, it's just that i think the e-mail concerns something you'll probably rather want to know about sooner than later. if i'm mistaken, or if you're already on the case, my apologies.
the e-mail was sent from "pvrijn@hotmail.com", sadly i forgot to save it but i'll send another message with the same content in a few moments.

oh and the email addy i sent it to is scamp @ untergr.. etc
havoc: Found it, yes, this indeed is an interesting issue, thanks for the mail. Forwarded it to the team for discussion. Next time: For Breakpoint feedback please use breakpoint07@untergrund.net, will give you much quicker response times.
scamp, thanks for the acknowledgement :) i'll definitely use the other address in the future for other party related issues, in fact i already considered to do so for this report but did not so to avoid any potential confusion and/or miscommunication.
Scamp: our jury results accurately mirror the voting results at ASM year after year, so it is very good measure of what will work and what won't work on the big screen and the ASM audience.
Teel: It seems the topic pops up every now and then, and too bad if it's a dealbreaker for you. I haven't seen that "lot of people" yet though, but definitely some very vocal people, and that's cool - we all have the right to disagree.
At the end, as you say, it comes back to the compo quality, which has been consistently high.

abyss: So the entries that get shown in compos get more votes, and you take that to confirm the jury selected the best entries? I hope that's not what you meant cause that's like textbook false logic.
But whatever, I don't think anyone has a problem with the preselection itself. It's more that you consider the discarded entries to be Assembly property nonetheless. I know what the contract says, but why? What's in it for you, except for a bigger release archive?

Besides all theese lame sample/vocalsrippers we have to give credit to true original musicians who never would steal a sample or vocal.
Big ups for Dixan and lugg..something of Shitfaced Clowns.!

That's just mean stefan :)
why?
doom: the entries that make in the big screen also are graded in the juries, so it is a very simple matter to compare jury grades to voting results, which are very identical.
Jury results for big screen entries are not released, because after jury selection it is the public choice.
Sure, the public doesn't vote for the non-qualified entries, but rarely, if ever, would the jury fail and not qualify an entry that the public would love.
What's in it for me or ASM? The spirit of the competition. It's what we feel is right for the competitions.
It's a matter of opinion, and I can understand that some people don't like the way we do it, and as I've repeatedly stated, that's cool.

assembly has pretty much the best demo compo there is simply due to the fact that 'crap' gets weeded out, and the compo stays sane in size (compare to say ms2k2 or some breakpoints with 35-45 entries in the main demo compo, of which 50% was total crap).
Tho I personally do disagree with the "release stuff that wasn't shown nevertheless".. especially in the democompo (considering the effort some released, but not shown, demos clearly exhibit)

Shifter: I feel like a computer actually got the third place or second place (can't remember), but they blatantly stole the song, which I suppose this thread was all about in the beginning =). The public voted them and loved them as did the jury, until the ripping was found and they were disqualified.
Chimera would have not scored well with the ASM audience. Some people like, some don't, and for an ASM audience, it would have not worked at all, which is exactly what I said.
Sorry, but those demos don't back up your statement at all.

Why shouldn't kids be exposed to more than mere entertainment?
ripping is so teh intarweb, so nowadays...
and remixing can't be seriously considered as straight stealing or cheating specially when you consider that the original 'Dumpa Mig' by Veronica Maggio is so lame and Elusive's remix so good :P
TBL will add the proper credits in their final version, basta, case is closed. :)

I understand the policy of Assembly completely. Demos like chimera would make 90% of the audience (including me) to fell asleep. I want to be entertained!
Because art = porn.
how about saint then ? 'According to the partyversion's infofile, it wasn't shown because the ASM orgas thought it was too much a "ravedemo" and contained "too much animation".'
surely that demo could have kept people awake ?

That was not precisely clear to me. In that light, no, these demos do not quite stack up to the limited interests of the total audience of ASM. You're right about that.

Bullseye.
I just wanna say that I think Veronica Maggio is very cute.
Is she still available?
Is she still available?
Might be true that Chimera wouldn't have interested the audience at Assembly, but if the non-qualified demos wouldn't be released, Halcyon might've had the chance to release it at some other party, where the crowd would be more receptive to such demos.
Teel: Well, Halcyon was defeated fair and square by the jury. And when you lose at ASM, you lose bigtime. ;)
They didn't lose, they didn't even get to compete.
