covering the classics - good or bad?

category: general [glöplog]
How come so many chip musicians feel the need to make covers of classic C64-tunes? It's not like you go "wow!" the 100th time you hear a version of a Rob Hubbard tune. Especially not when it's YM-2149 and some sounds come out like farts squeezed through an asshole that has been cemeted shut with crazy glue.

Personally i prefer YM-covers thousand times more than all those generic eurodance craps. But as always, it depends totally on the matter does the remix bring anything new to old tune or is it just a cover, mostly it's just a cover and worth zero. So IMO the platform doesnt really matter but the tune does.

I don't do the aforementioned thing a lot but when I do, it's mostly for the fun and challenge of transcribing the original and indeed, adding something new to the mix. Sample trackers and lesser sound chips can hardly compete with the SID synth so a new perspective is called for. Although I really don't mind if a music editor made for a platform I'm not familiar with comes with a couple of familiar demo songs.

How come so many C64 musicians feel the need to make covers of commercial songs or scene music from other platforms?
The answer to this, and the original, question is probably that good melodies are hard to come up with. But that's just an uneducated guess since I am not a musician.

I think it's an outrage! The YM does not even come close to the original, wam sound of the SID! Every musician that dares to touch an original SID tune and cover it on Atari deserves to be SHOT in the FACE! Fuck them all! Their sound is fucking horrible and they let our SID tunes sound like a DISGRACE! It's bad advertisement for the GREAT music on our platform!

I like Italo Disco covers. There arn't many of them but still, I think that the Italian composers where the best during the 80ties.

I think covers are cool if they actually add something to the original composition. Like a total change in style, creative use of instruments etc. A good YM cover is a good YM cover, don't be dissin' the YM :) The YM might not be up SID standards, but god are the coders and composers for it creative! gwEms tracker for example!

There were a lot of italo compilations on the pirate bay top 100 this past summer, so I guess it's regaining popularity.

Why wouldn't it? Why I don't understand is why it lost popularity to begin with.

No I dont get them from torrents, I have a lot of LP rips over more then 3000 italo songs, without italo compilations. I'm also a space label (MP3) collector got a lot of stuff from Hypersound Productions (Still releasing stuff), Made Up Records, AXiS Records and some other, contact me if you want some stuff. I also have the label scans. My favorite Italo Disco song is: K. Barre - Right By The moon

As for Italo Classics, I reccommend the Italian Soundtrack of the animation series Goldorak (Goldrake). Vega is my favourite of it. They were made around 1980 i think...
