One of the highlights of sundown2006 was that Mark Shuttleworth (the guy behing Ubuntu)was there proposing to the sceners to create kind of demoscene pieces for the loading bar, login screen and other parts of Ubuntu. If you ever tested Ubuntu you won't be too surprised as all the screensavers that goes with it are quite scener-ish. As much as I was able to hear (as I was a bit busy) was Navis and Smash saying that something like Moppi's Assembly invitation would fit very well with what he is after.

That to me sounds like GREAT news, an OS where sceners can make nice works for, and also the idea that the next version of Ubuntu will come with XGL and stuff it's just awesome, bye bye Windows! :)

The article was written by Will Pollard, not me - it's not of the highest quality (I would have preferred to have had a look over it before it was posted), but nonetheless the basics are there.

Essentially, Ubuntu <3's the scene, and Mark Shuttleworth is keen to put in motion whatever it takes to make the startup good looking.

yes, the ubuntu screensaver with the lavalamp is prolly the lamest piece of code ever produced...

Mark Shuttleworth did specifically mention that this is going to be part of a next-generation boot-up framework which is more intelligent about determining which services are necessary, and what order to start them up in (i.e. having a graphics subsystem early on is fairly important here). And besides, system startup is not CPU-bound at all (only something like 10% load, typically).

So no, not longer boot sequences at all. Sorry to ruin your trolling material.

may the demosceners replace the ugly browny default Ubuntu color scheme by a dutch coder scheme or by a smooth & slick ASD one :D

The loading bar in dapper has been replaced by usplash in edgy (the next release, 6.10), and it has some neat features, but just some skinning capabilities. Due to the specifics of startup system in linux (be it sysvinit, upstart, initng... ), it's quite difficult to have something else than a framebuffer to draw during the startup process, so no accelerated love in that part.

The login screen is basically the GDM, and it's Gnome field,and you can basically skin it. The screensavers are Gnome also, but there was a branch so now you can have an Ubuntu set of screensavers and a standard-Gnome set, each with their own tools.

And now, with the boom of accelerated X-servers -xgl, aiglx, etc.- your x-windows system can perform some neat and almost not cpu-consuming effects. You only need to check the default XFWM with composite, or the latest Metacity, or Compiz and more recently, Beryl and Emerald themes.

So, right now, the scene could: redesign the whole windows system to make it more scene-ish, add some themes (for xfce, gnome, kde, etc.), create some gtk-based engines, add more plugins to the accelerated window managers, or create some screensavers - which i don't really find useful since either i am using my computer and don't need a screensaver, or i am away from it and can't look at the screen.
