breakpoint 07 amiga compos
category: general [glöplog]
oh.. this is beautiful! just really beautiful!!!
@okkie don`t take it too serious!!! but we can`t improove the compo if we did not know what is the problem for orgaz etc
I know, I know.. I wasn't being sarcastic! Now the whole 'PPC LOL' discussion is actually in YOUR hands.. and that makes the circle round..
dirtie: It might help to actually read what ryg posted. No, this is not about PPC or SVHS, this is about "we want another organizer from the Amiga scene". You know, humans and stuff.
Madenmann: No. But now that you mentioned it... Havoc, please contact me ;)
the problem is that we have no one in the bp organizing team who is willing or capable to record the amiga demo compos, plain and simple. (read: those that are willing have never touched a real amiga)
we have non-ppc amigas if bringing your own is a problem (acryds amigas, which we used this year); the reason we would prefer people to bring their own machines is that they presumably know their own systems intimately, so weird configuration problems should be quick to fix.
we do not record to SVHS anymore and haven't been for the past 2 years (tried to buy SVHS tapes recently? good luck :). we're using DV now.
we're prerecording when possible (read: when the machine spits out a PAL signal anyway) because it's really a lot easier. no moving compo machines around, no potential of demos crashing during the compo, no reboot delays, etc. plus we can easily release video captures of the demos afterwards (like we already did this year).
everything using >=640x480 resolution tends to look relatively crappy when recorded as PAL (because colors blur notably, and everything else too when the resolution is >720x576), so we do pc intros/demos in realtime. however, we use 2 *identical* compo pcs for that (so we can switch and reboot during the compo without delays) - i'd say our chances of getting 2 identical amigas are pretty slim.
as for PPC, that frankly isn't even a question as long as we have no PPC hardware. *if* there was someone with PPC hardware, and also more than one PPC entry in the works (really in the works, not "we thought about maybe doing one"), we could at least talk about it; but as long as there's no HW and noone to use it, that debate is pretty useless.
to clarify my initial post a bit: we need an *active* amiga scener (i.e. actually knows how to work with amigas, not "used to know 10 years ago") to do the compo preparation on the party (amiga demos/intros, 96k game, executable music). that's an organizer job, so coming early to help with the preparations and staying for the after-party cleanup is a requirement. and yes, that all sounds awfully easy and boring, but trust me, you won't be sitting around twiddling your thumbs. it's more work than it sounds like.

I think the arrival and stay time builds the biggest problem.
As most of us hardly can get more spare time additional to the easter holidays. In fact I f.e. must clearly state over months "that I'll be away during easter".
I case of knowing the hardware and bug/troubleshooting
I also would recommend StingRay for this but I highly doubt
he would be available from Wednesday untill Tuesday.

i'm trying to imagine sting in a pink or orange orga-shirt ..
.. no. that's not gonna happen. not at all. probably. =)

Soo... does this mean that if there is nobody, the amiga compo will be cancelled?
dodge: You don't have to tell us it's hard to invest that much spare time. We know this. That's what we 30+ orgas are doing year after year.
Btw, the actual time frame is wednesday morning until late monday evening (but obviously this means going to work on tuesday is out).
As all the other organizers no matter what platform they are on manage to live with that, I'm pretty sure there also do exist Amigaceners who'd be able to do the same. If they are *willing* to invest that time is a totally different thing of course. But if not, they would only be proving that they really don't care about the Amiga scene that much anymore and therefore Breakpoint also shouldn't ;)

okkie: We already got one Amiga organizer. However, we usualy don't put the whole responsibility for a whole platform into the hands of a single first-time organizer due the risks involved.
So no, this isn't about cancelling. But it would be a PRETTY poor sign if even after asking 6 months in advance noone from the Amiga scene would accept the challenge to improve the representation of his platform at Breakpoint.
I doubt the Amiga scene is that unconcerned yet. I'm confident our plan will work out :)

So, again to make this crystal clear: Our plan is to *improve* and extend on Amiga platform features. This isn't limited to the compos alone, btw.
Don't you have any german demoscene portal? It just seems odd coming to an international demoscene site advertising for opening spots in the bp crew with demands on staying in bingen(!) during non-weekdays. For scandinavian people you would need to add a day on both sides and also it would probably not be as fun as visiting the party and if you remove the entrance fee it still wouldnt make much differ in the economy for someone who has to pay flight tickets etc.
Because of this you make it sound like you kindof want to "mud down" the amiga scene / compo instead of giving it a positive view by just telling theres an "open spot in bp DEMOorganizing crew". However I don't care. Amiga = Cancer.

Scamp:
This evening d!rt!e and I will collect some basic technincal issues (questions) about the whens, hows and whats.
I've already sent some available hardware configs we can supply.
One thing for sure. We are *willing* to sacrifice additional days for this event. So it's only some re-scheduling for planned releases. Expect another detailed email tomorrow.

Cool, thanks.

you will be expected to [arrive] two days prior to the party and stay for at least one day of after-party cleanup.

Ghandy or/and the other Moods Plateau guys would be good for this mission :)

I nominate Stingray.

Maybe kalms can do it..

Maybe there are some less lazy people at the bitfellas' forum.
An email to Scamp is on the way. Would not be so easy because of my dog and the fact that I am not such an expert. Been too busy working with my PC. But I would like to help where I can.

Thanks everyone, we now got quite a few of offers for help - that was quick :)
So: Hooray, thanks, and subject done.

i think Mad Wizards would like PPC back in the compo , if they have a demo for bp07 that is ofcourse..
Is it allowed to capture an amiga demo from WinUae btw? Starstruck by TBL was captured this way for the assembly 06 demo compo..

I guess Mawi will be able to speak for themselves. As ryg has outlined, if people really are working on PPC productions, they may get in contact with the Amiga compo organizers and discuss this.
We won't dicuss this anymore with anyone not actually involved for obvious don't-waste-time-on-trolls reasons.

indeed, don't feed the trolls!
