Mindcandy?! DVD? Where????

And to stay with the topic: I bought a 180 Bucks TOSHIBA DVD Player. Thin like shit and very cool. Rock solid, good Quality and everything you need. mp3, svcd, vcd, blah blah playback.

I wouldn't buy one of those 99 bucks DVD players.

Stay above 100 Euros and make sure the player supports NTSC and your TV supports either NTSC or RGB in, and you should be safe then ;)

How about the Philips JackRabbit32? You can:
- use it as an external DVD player and CD burner if you connect it to a PC
- use it as a standalone DVD player without a computer if you connect it to a television (remote included)
- use it as a MP3 CD player

60 euros LG ide dvd player. It works perfectly, and it's cheap.

Bah, some people have way too spare cash... Download the demos and watch them, it's really that easy.

Most DVD players I have had/seen died after a while. They were no good even for reading cdroms. And region control sucks. Basically, I hate DVD technology. As Garagj said, better off watching demos on AVIs, DivX, emulators or natively when possible.

Go Pioneer! You can probably not get it for 100 euros, but they are good, even their inexpensive models. Otherwise try if you can get one from dubmood's school :)

PS2 or whatever. For a DVD player, the controls suck.. but if you've got a console anyway then...

moT - if you hate dvd, what do you watch movies on?? are you a fan of image noise, tape rewinding and 4:3 pan&scan? :)

I don't know about the reliability of those 60 € dvd players, but I have a panasonic player which is about 4.5 years old and works like a charm. I guess a dvd player is the same as anything else - you get what you pay for...

and IMO mindcandy is a nice way of preserving and watching those old demos. I'm certainly not going to keep piles of old computing junk around the house just for watching old demos. another nice thing is that you can watch a dvd almost anywhere.

I got a "cyber-home" dvd player, really cheap, ages ago. It started not reading CD's so I opened it (out of guarantee period) and found out it was a standard 5 1/4" DVD player, so I just replaced it with a cheap'o computer one and it started working perfectly again. I have all the formats i need in it, region-free and updatable firmware (they're working on putting out a divx firmware). What else could I need? :)

I'd say get the cheapest of em all. Usually the cheaper the player the more formats it does support...
The Cheapest isn't really a good tip. Well depends on what you want.

If you don't give a fuck on RGB Output, NTSC, Superb Picture Quality, DTS, then go buy a 60 Bucks DVD player. But otherwise. 130 and more.

Ps2 is not a good option. Way too loud, no RGB output (unchipped), has problems with many DVD's. And when you insert Messiah Chip, you have RGB output but well.. 90% of all DVD's don't work anymore. ~_~
Or my chip is fekked. ;)

I forgot another option. If you are not really interested in DVD movies, you could also consider a DVD-rom. Here I recommend Pioneer (again) or Toshiba. If you search on google you can even find region-hacks to unlock the regional code. Then you need a player, this depends offcourse on your operating system. For Windows WinDVD and PowerDVD are both fine players.

Instead of that ps2, grab yourself an xbox + modchip, and you'll have yourself a progressive scanning pal/ntsc dolby digital region-free dvd-player. Oh, it seems to play games too.

I'd like to agree with sagacity on the xbox choice. It's not only a great DVD region-free player with RGB Progresive scan, it is also a great plattaform with a day-by-day gorwning scene of homebrew productions, demo and application.

I should specially mention emulators and media players. Being cheaper than PS2, you can have a game system plenty of ultils installed on the harddisk (installation it's not required but doubtless usefull) to play dvd, divx (all codecs), vcd and svcd.

Mine's also have instalaed MameX with 1300+ ROMS that loads and plays in the xbox perfectly.

And, of course, a pretty good plattaform to code in, with two sdk available, the official one and the opensource one.

that's why I absolutely recomended a modded xbox as your dvd solution of choice. Hope this info had been useful tu you. bye. And, in the other hand, Microsoft really really sucks, bur concretelly, xbox doesn't :D
