Refocus of the demoscene

category: general [glöplog]
Nowadays offshoring becomes more and more a reality. Not to soon in the future, all programming, engineering and computer science work will be performed by cheap, high quality work in oversea. The western world will concentrate more on administrative duties like management, trading and legal issues.

What does this mean to us? The demoscene has been and is a cradle of future computer talent, a place where we are able to gain an impressive skill set than can not be taught anywhere else. Unfortunately, the demoscene is mainly centered in countries where this kind of capabilities will be obselete soon.

Can be afford to spent our youth and young adulthood acquiring knowledge that will be useless in our working life? No, we can't. Therefore I suggest to refocus the demoscene. We need to focus on management, marketing and IP issues.

Please discuss. Some suggestions I have:

- Create more management jobs in demogroups. A demogroup does not only need a leader, but a strict organisation to work more efficiently. Make sure your execution is as efficient as possible. Second place is for losers.
- Every demogroup needs a marketing position. You do not only make trendy computer animations - you create a product, a brand.
- Try to benefit from the outsourcing trend. Do you really need an european coder?
- Demoparties should offer more opportunities for networking.

I've been thinking about moving to Goa and establishing some kind of a coder cult there. Anyone else interested?

After this we could outsource the whole demoscene to India.
nosfe: Easy, just post it here: http://www.getafreelancer.com/

Would actually be interesting to post some requests there to put a real life price tag on demos and intros.

Man, I just can't believe how low all the bids are on getafreelancer.com. It almost makes me want to invest some money in hiring some guy to do a huge project for almost nothing (ie. whatever he voluntarily bids), just to see how much the project can make.

Hours of someone's life for sale. Dirt cheap! Get them before they're gone!

Wtf? Demoscene is more than computer engineering. You can never outsource the work of real art. Of course you can hire some indian company to produce farbrausch like 'products' but you can't never ever offshore iSO for example. It just doesn't work.

I doubt indian people wouldn't even drink 'kilju'.

Stelthz: If India really has so many great coders as some politicians claim, why do we hardly ever get to see a demo from India?

Adok: because the demoscene is an manly european thing? why isnt the scene big in asia, they got billions of people over there, and lots of skilled programmers.... simply because it's not a part of their culture... in europe software copying has always been quite different from asia too.. might be there already where they got fucked. donno really.
why do we don't see that many (good) demos from the land of the free, home of the brave?

bcuz they good better things to do (like whining about terrorism)
I stopped coding demos.
I only code workflow machines and CRM systems for all the demogroups of the future.
I also heard next version of partymeister will feature CRM and networking elements to improve coops between groups on demoparties.
