Sorry to make all you super elite feel so small an insignificant. I don't know what a demo party consists of, true. I may not know what the demoscene is exactly, true. But now at least I know the kind of people that make up the demo scene, and by the cover of this book, I wouldn't recommend it. I like the wiki battle BTW, not me making the changes, but funny none the less. The last edit is the best though, I still haven't seen any "good" description of the demoscene, a demo, or even a demo party from any "scener". I've asked demo enlightened people to provide this info a number of times. You know what I get? Well, lets just say crickets. If you want a better image, why don't you promote one? My site gets a lot of local traffic, and whatever info is available there is seen by a lot of people every day, so please, continue to bitch about my inaccurate description, or offer an accurate one. I could care less, demo parties aren't my bag.

Perhaps the problem could be that an average American has got used to a different style of explanations than an average European, for example.
You know, there must be a lot of "you"s: a lot of referring to things and experiences that are already familiar to "you", and a lot of simplification to ensure that "you" understand the points even with minimal mental effort. And of course, the overall tone must be very enthusiastic with a lot of marketing glamour, or else the explanation might sound like a school lesson, and you know that education is boring, isn't it?

The demoscene, as I see it, is a nebulous group of artistic and technically minded programmers, graphics artists and musicians who design and create demonstrations of their skills. "Typical" demos will focus on style, art, message, programs with size limits (64kilobytes, 4 kilobytes, 256 bytes) or just pushing the limits of what a graphics card can do (such as, getting fast 3D graphics on a 20-year-old machine with no 3D graphics hardware). The visual/design content of demos can be as high, if not higher than modern PC games. Usually demo groups will put greetings to other demo groups they like or that inspired them into their demos.
The demoscene is active on Windows PCs, Mac OS X, Linux, Amiga and Atari computers from the late 80s and mid-90s, and nearly every other computing platform you can think of- even iPods.
There are any number of competitions held every year where demo-groups go to hang out, and compete for who has the best demo in various categories (prizes vary by party and organizer).

You might want to explain that the demoscene grew out of the computer hobbyist/homebrew computer scene from the early 80s... people might know more about that than the cracker scene the demoscene is more directly descended from.
Also, so that they don't think demos are simply animations, you might want to make a note that demos by and large generate the scenes (and sometimes the music, especially in smaller demos) on the fly- which means they might also be different every time.
And I agree, there's just something extra special about an attractive woman, with an exotic foreign accent. Granted, 'exotic foreign' is up for grabs...
I notice all those EU things you mentioned are English- the scene of course includes Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, the Hinterlands, the Überlands, the... I got carried away... anyway, and international groups, etc etc.
And Dr. Who is actually also new; they're making new ones and while much of it is still childish it's actually churning out (imho) more hits than misses.
Oh, and by the way- I've never been to a demo party either and I don't code, so... you may want input from some of these other people. I just kinda read what goes on thirdhand at Pouet.net; hence I know about Winnerdemo etc.
