demos in galleries?

category: general [glöplog]
Today;
found myself strolling through a lukewarm exhibition at ACMI.. and left quasi-unimpressed, thinking "we're so more awesome...".

Any thoughts on demos in galleries/as installations?

haha i had the same thoughts while attending a party at art gallery awhile back. they had these pieces of art with video screens and stupid stuff like a persons head moving across them and i don't even remember what else. but people seemed to think it was pretty rad. i thought it was a joke. ;)

You know what? When I troll through an exhibition or see a performance, I often think exactly the contrary.

I avoid going to galleries so i don't have to start thinking.

there was katastro.fi related (and demoscene) exhibition in kiasma (finnish modern art museum) but it was just small room

I think a non-stop demoshow on a single screen would work better than a gallery/installation-like exhibition (such as the one in Kiasma, where each of the multiple screens of the small dark room showed a different demo).

And yes, it's a pity that most of the "computer technology meets art" hypists are so clueless about the demoscene.
_-__-: I know what you mean; i guess it depends on the artists involved. Of course, there are guys like Ryoji Ikeda, Ulf Langheinrich (experts at their field).. but mostly, I couldn't agree more with viznut. But then, i guess lots of people in that "niche art" sector are clueless about lots of things...

Anyone talk about this stuff at Buenzli (demoscene activism in disguise? o.o)

uns3en_ its not 'modern art' its contemporary art.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_art vs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_art)

i think some of our demos have been shown in some random galleries in austria or some other place like that some years ago.

Well, when i was in some of the little galleries in our town, i talked to them, they seemed interested but then meant computers do not belong there...

I talked also to a owner of a computer gaming hall which had a bigscreen where mostly MTV was shown. I asked him to show Demos instead. He watched a few and said its not possible, the kids there only like hip hop...

Imagine a corridor full of screens with 256byte intros! It would feel awsome!

Gargaj, let's call it clever vocabularism!

are demos more art or kitch? art = communication? kitch, just technics? dunno. imo demos dont have to be art, i think demos are like magician magic tricks.. why you have to put all stuff under "art". what we need to proof to others that we do something important? can't we just be in our little own world, don't need any curators or art reviewers...

we're just too in the middle. demos are too entertaining for the artyfartycrowd to like them, after all, there have to be either five hidden meanings or some sort of 'wtf'-experience for something to be art. i've noticed that people who deal a lot with contemporary art tend to not like fr-025 at all, but love stuff like kolonija and chimera. most demoscene outreachers play a portal process demo, however, and explain about the shaders. what do museum keepers care about shaders? don't show them partywinners, give them the disqualified demos and you may yet get some demos shown on galleries.

I'd actually like to see demos evolve in diversity, so that there would be a greater variance in styles, genres, presentation mediums, etc. This could also make the demoscene more interesting for all kinds of outsider audiences such as the previously mentioned artsfarts.

And by the way, isn't a "wtf-experience" what good demos are all about anyway? :)
Quite frankly, one demo is entertaining for an outsider. But many demos, probably not so, due to what viznut is hinting at. Demos are too fucking inbred. Watching, say, 30 demos in a row from a particular year is almost like watching the same movie again and again.

viznut, with "wtf-experience" i actually meant more stuff like "why the hell is this in a museum?" or "ok this guy is a lunatic" :-)

i get study credits at an art academy for the videos that get not shown at demoparties.

That's a rather broad generalization; it's usually not hard to select 30 entirely different demos, it just takes some effort. Of course, they'll still stay demos in some way or other, but to call all demos alike is a stretch in my eyes.

most demos are very alike. which sucks. :) far far far too many demos use other demos as their inspiration. knos is right - it's totally inbred.

agreeing with knos and smash.

anyway, it's about craft and design, not "art".

Who is anyone of you to tell me us what it's about?

exhibitonist ballet dance performance near gallery took me into prison.
that's why demoscene should go inside
