Demo videos

Why are so many videos of demos/intros requested these days? I just thought about it and came to the conclusion that...
... and PS2.0 si teh suxx! ;P

Because not everyone finds working C64s in the trash.
And some of us don't run Windows, which is the chosen platform of many folks. And while it would be nice to have a machine just run windows, I'm not shelling out the same amount I could buy a mac for just for the vidcard.
(Yes, I've seen them priced, in US $, above what I paid, in England, at 2:1, for the ibook I've had for the past 3 years.)
Nothing beats the original hardware, period. When I can, I catch them on that hardware - such as at parties, or demoshows, or when visiting sceners. But for all other times, it's nice to be able to see Conspiracy's intros.

And some partyversions have unnecessary MS-VStudio or other SDK libs in it...one has to get from the net and they aren't really needed at all.
Example: I can't get the D3DX9_30.dll from the net (ok, not from where I used to get it...announced but no link, yet) and Track One by Fairlight needs it to run...*d'oh*

one reason is that there are still systems where no working emulators exist.. e.g. the atari falcon. I think it is necessary to provide a video if you want to reach a bigger audience... and people definitely want this... as making demos for 10 people is not as much fun as for 1000 or more :)
Btw I was talking about PC demos of course. Should have added that perhaps. *grin* ;P
because it's an enormous pain in the arse to make demos run on all "compatible" configs, especially if you use slightly higher level technology than, say, opengl 1.1. after all, there's enough problems making videogames compatible (we know, believe me), it often takes a LOT of testing with a huge suite of different machines with different videocards and still takes a lot of patching afterwards.
the chances of doing this on a demo, considering a) we dont have the full range of hw and machines and b) we arent getting paid to fix it, are we? .. is limited. e.g. i had no idea our 64k might not run on some win2k configs because we had none available to test with. we tested on all the group members hw we could find, and that covered a pretty good range, so we called it "job done".
and our demo was handed in incredibly late, so the amount of testing done on the final package was limited to about 3 machines.
a video provides an easy solution - everyone can watch it, it doesnt require further fixing. and (hopefully) it'll still work in 5-10 years. so i'd hope that every release gets a video. :)
the d3dx issue with our assembly release was, while we would normally include all the dlls (msvc 7, d3dx) that are needed, we didnt actually have enough space to make the sizelimit with those in the package. :D
