HELP! save assembly!

category: general [glöplog]
there's been a lot of discussion going on the assembly mailinglist and irc-channel about the future of assembly, which is now at stake. some organisers feel that there is no intrest and thus no need for another party, that the whole thing should be just put to the rest.
i'd like to hear what really is peoples intrest toward assembly now? should it all just end?

and please, try not to pouetize this thread too soon.

I was mainly talking about the CD throwing and football competition...

The walk of fame under the tunnel, and then the bright light hits you. Ah, glory..

Winner or not, it's true that ASM has always provided some awesome quality in the democompo (I've never been on stage in 11 years at ASM, so I can speak :D)

If there is some lack of interest well... it's the best occasion to kick the gamers out and have some quality scene party in the middle of august (which is the best time of the year due to holidays, weather and alike).

Probably Assembly can live without demosceners, but I feel like there should be a major event in the summertime.

apart the joke that was to repost nosfe's alt party crying of help (i hope you got that dixan...)

asm'05 was great for me because it was the first time. and was probably the last one... right now i'm sitting at euskal, a place that reminds me a lot of assembly with all the gamers around me, with the downside of not having seperate scene halls and no boozembly - though the warm beer yesterday got me sure enough.

i hope asm never dies - just like the scene. i enjoy watching the demos - yes, asd is rightfully scoring high - but i prefer to do so surrounded by sceners and not by narrow-minded gamers. i'm sorry if i offend someone, but that's how i feel.

so, don't forget, asm shadow party at my place. anyone?

AND OMFG THAT WAS A SERIOUS POST!!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH ME?

let's fix it:

Auch, i didn't get it, i am getting old.
In fact i pressed submit and then realized "hey, a serious post from Jeenio?".
Then I checked ASM forums, which don't mention anything about this, and the bell rang :)

from extremely unserious to just curiously unserious:

any party with seminars should die.
Apparantly you never saw Skrebbels seminar, I say, keep them coming :-)

seriously why always scorning gamers ? if some demoparties can survive thanks to them, why not ? why wouldn't people be allowed to be interested in both worlds ?

and how many retired or active key demosceners are working in the game biz ? :P

mmm let's watch the last razor1911 cracktro ^^

dixan, damn you're getting old!

Zest: I guess the problem is that some demoparties have been killed by gamers. The ultimate example is of course The Party, but The Gathering also lost many of it's scene visitors around '98/'99 because they focused on gamers too much (although they seemed to have learned from their mistakes from what I've heard).

And btw, many parties around Europe prove every weekend that you don't need gamers to survive. You only need gamers to go big.

If you'd ever visited Assembly in the recent years, you would've noticed that not only are the gamers not interested about demoscene, they don't even have any respect for anything else than their quake-buddies. Hate will only cause hate.

Not that the demoscene has any respect for the gamers either. Most random people I've talked to at ASM have been open to influence and interested in compos as well, unlike some lame sceners who take it as their duty to behave like idiots toward the (usually a lot younger than themselves) gamers.

I remember Chaos visiting ASSEMBLY the first time a few years back and him just being amazed how all of those 3000 monitors turned off the moment a compo began and people started watching the compo.

I think that speaks a volume about how seriously we take competitions and the years we have spent educating people.

There is a huge amount of interest towards demoscene competitions at ASM. At the same time, the party wouldn't exist if it weren't for the money brought in by general visitors (not just gamers!), so the party needs to also cater for their needs.

It is delicate balance. It seems that we have succeeded as the quality of ASM compos has been consistently high. If you look at all of the past Scene.org awards winners and nominees, roughly 30-40% of the entries have been released at ASSEMBLY, with another 30-40% coming from Breakpoint and the rest from smaller scene-only parties.

What this tells to me is that for the people who continue to make cool productions, Assembly continues to matter. Whiners can say whatever they please - the proof is in the compo quality.

Yeah, sceners need money too.

abyss: i don't think no-one was here questioning the quality of assembly's compos (oh sorry, ASSEMBLY's compos) so please don't go pesky on that.

i just prefer to be surrounded by other types of people rather than gamers. it's like sex: some people prefer men, others prefer women, others prefer both.
