really beautifull, but slow as hell :/
(but amazing stuff, and an excellent lesson for coders :)

Not as fast & beautiful as tube, but still better than 90% of all 256byte intros. :)

my mind has been stopped when i saw this

this is pure enlitement in code

the true name of god is 256 bytes long

:-)
rulez added on the 2001-12-18 16:30:49 by zden zden
making slow code so you can trick couple of bytes off is an excellent lesson?-)

anyway, it is now "made me to boot to dos/windows" -approved.

hmm. the shading looks odd and "artistic".. like the background faded near edges. may need some reverse engineering:)

wow, cool raytrace! respect. little slow, but who cares, fortunately i have a fast cpu :)
it runs under win2k too

Played for a couple of seconds, then my XP box went blue on me. I don't get it! These two seconds were impressive, though :-)

one word: yay!

I couldn't do this effect at all, heh.. raytracing in a 256b makes me all warm and happy inside. For a moment. Looking at the source, I could have some fun tomorrow playing around, heh.

Dammit.. takes me back to the Asm'94 days when I stared confused at 4k intros.

too bad about the speed ^_^

well.. even tho its pretty unbelievable to see this in 256b i still think thats its boring to se it at this rather low framerate, i prefer the 256b-intro tube by the same guy.. it still rules tho.

Very slow unfortunatelly, but very beautifull anyways! The colors, the texture, the shading, the object it raytraces on are so good for 256bytes! I think we will need more CPU power for better tiny intros, or not? :P
rulez added on the 2001-12-19 18:40:42 by Optimus Optimus
OMG!!

this stuff rocks, too sad it's a little slow even on a 1.4Ghz cpu >_<

rulez added on the 2001-12-19 18:57:03 by p01 p01
Yes it's slow, sawwy ;] I couldn't use tables or advanced iterative technique cuz all that just takes up space. Also, implicit surface that I used is a complete pig ;] It requires many iterations to be hit by a ray (not mentioning hidden relation between depth of field and 'speed' of the ray which needs to be properly balanced). Don't take it too seriously, I just wanted to try something new. Thanks for the feedback people, though! I'm glad you liked it :)

My only complaint is the speed, but I guess you can't have everything in 256b...

Don't worry about speed, it will be fast in a 8 months or a bit less :)

rulez added on the 2001-12-22 16:35:22 by galen galen
It's the most beutiful 256b intro I've ever seen, you can't just stop watch it and try to think how he'd getting it all in just 256b.

The only bad thing I can find is that it's so extremly slow, but it's maybe my P3 733 that doesn't give the intro the speed it deserves. But I guess you can't get everyting in a 256b. :)
rulez added on the 2001-12-24 10:47:15 by bumbu bumbu
as I said in 256b.com, it's GREAT... hm... it's high time time to code 256bytes again... I am so inactive nowadays.
I love such 256b intros: nice warm colors, feeling of a little 3d world...
I am a 256b fan and suc jewels are precious for me =)

Insider note: I had to make it intentionally slow because a) it took less bytes, b) the number of iterations it takes to calculate the surface intersection is used for the illusion of lighting :) It is possible to increase the speed by a factor of 3 just by manipulating a single constant in the code but visually it would suffer. Thanks for all the positive replies, it's been quite a while already.

Neatly done! Still a worthy demo so many years later.

Right, if I remember correctly the RCL was just something that generated usable pseudo-random values inside DH register because Carry flag introduces a "random" bit and CL is automatically decremented by LOOP so it rotates the "random" value differently every iteration. The texture generator is pretty basic. It averages two pixels but also adds a small random value and places the result on the next scanline. I used NOT BH to mirror one of the texture coordinates in the process because the image must wrap nicely and look seamless.
