Annoying music is annoying but visuals are OK.

Way beyond anything in the scene. Which is why it can't win.
This prod. makes bingo just more awesome ;)
fucking awesome
top quality stuff on the visual side, sadly less than mediocre on the audio side.
Its super TOP. 3D Golden Destop :)
Poor color, Poor design, Poor Visual....Nice prod on Amiga :))
Should have won ofcoz, brain melting visuals, insane amount of details.
Stylish to the max!
so lovely!!
Really dig the AR demoreel vibe in this in addition to the exquisite modelling and animation work. The soundtrack didn't hit me a lot though.
Did not like the sound track ... but the rest is insanely good
Perfect craftsmanship, obviously! If you complain here, your own assets are probably just inferior (or non-existant).
Really enjoyed this. Also great to see Muffler back, again! But the Commodore brand in a PC demo (also in Hold and Modify) feels odd to me. Why not put an NVidia logo instead?

Full of energy. Great demo!
Looks great, and I sorta dig the tune as well, although it's close to crossing the annoying thresold.. but where did those 120MB go?
Forgot thumb
Whoah! Ace demo - it kind of makes you forget that this is realtime...
I'm not really digging the track, and some of the syncs, but the demo is really solid!
Also: "Muffler diver award"

Great polish, awesome style and execution! So many things to look at! Music was very good too. AGAIN... But I refuse to get used to quality :) BRILLIANT
Nice direction and rendering as always, but that Commodore logo, wtf?!?! Could have been cool if you had put it somewhere in the less obvious.
And then the music - Fuck it hurt my ears :/

a class above.
Awesome work, one of my favorite CNCD/FLT demos. Big thumb up to Destop for typography work, love this shit, this is fucking gold.
Maytz, this is NOT commodore logo, this is commodore inspired logo, some kind of joke by making C (CNCD) and F(Fairlight) combine. Genius

Sakiaa. Flawless style and visuals, must be my favourite smashtop demo in a long time. Fine soundtrack too. The Commodore logo crowd whoring was quite embarassing though, the only low point in the prod.
i thought this was an obvious winner.
the soundtrack (even if I'm not totally into it), the tech and the visuals are top-notch.

Looks like it's supposed to be a story, but all the elements are just unrelated. Music is not really my kind of style.
And who do you think you are, Michael Bay? Hold the camera steady dammit. Thumb for all the details, because they make it rewatchable.

love the music, lots of nice visuals and little touches, but it didn't particularly feel like you were trying something new which is a shame. the humour in it is subtle like the text on the awards at the end, but that sort of detail is great. the thing that really gets my thumb though is the direction, especially the doubled dancer pose at the end which works perfectly!
wonderful track from muffler if i read right.
pretty much what gargaj said.
expected it to be something awful from all the salty comments here..

Not my fave at all but of course a good demo, track too.
This is what mainstream will look like in 2050.
This is incredible and the tune is baller af! All people complaining are just old and boring I guess?
Nice programming!
Should have won.
What gargaj and okkie said. You can't even compete with this. Well, adapt did, but still. Glad to hear good old jungle in this age, worked super nicely in the demo.
hey,
i dont dig the music, but some of the visuals are really nice. it really could stand on its own without cheap out of place CBM reference though.
lovely energetic jungle music and stylish visuals.
I'm getting bored of black and white. But the pacing, typography, and direction are insane, and I'll commend you for the bravado to use amen breaks and the wahwahwah horn.
Took me a second watch to get the name. Clever. Awesome demo overall.
In a class of its own – demo of the year for me. The tune is amazing too!
best cncd demo since ziphead.. so much stuff to see there. :D
Tons of stuff as always from CNCD vs. Fairlight. But I don't really feel like it all works together; I just lost track at some point, without understanding the whole. Impossible not to thumb up, though.
why wouldn't you thumb this up
A posh, high-end mess, born out of sophisticated tooling & decades of nu-media art experience. Almost annoyingly professional. But pretty cool.
Great tunage \o/ , and great fast paced visuals, very stylish, sometimes disconnected though. still more than thumbworthy =)
Polished. As. Fuck.
It ´s always pleasant to see something fresh on demoscene, a new approach to polished audiovisual style. Fantastic demo, best demo from this year. Blow my socks off...
i can't understand how it didn't win - but after reading this thread i've got a clue of it i guess..
ass!
Lightyears ahead of the competition! Would like to see a proper color palette remix tho.
Awesome stuff. By far the best music on the compo. But as always, people like lame nerd sounds more. :)
Polished visuals and an enjoyable track but I don't think they fit well together. It does look great though.
Can I thumb down all the comments about the music being horrible?
great scenes and music and link between both, liked those contour lines / hill effect switches a lot, beside the rest
I think desktops design style is fucking fanastic, and this was probably some of the best i've ever seen! ...paired with an excellent jungle soundtrack! Thank you guys!! I will watch this all week long.
The only thing that would make this better was perhaps some tighter integrated between the scenes conceptually. It seems to try to jump on and out of macro/micro scale but ends up coming off a bit confusing, yet top notch visually.
Huge thumb pointing skywards!!

great stuff.
can't shake the feeling the direction and the soundtrack didn't quite fit together though.

boring
Really quite excellent on all fronts!
Not similar to that things we all saw from CNCD and FLT in past. But... still good. Thumbs Up.
great! loved the tune too
The soundtrack in the middle and towards the end were good as were most of the visuals, but the rest of it was "OMG why?" :-/ Still a thumb.
way ahead of its time, the music, the visuals, the code, that's why it couldn't win... but it's already first place in our hearts. thank you guys for this amazing trip. <3
Got an Ace Combat vibe from from the map effects in the demo, and that's an automatic vote (and a thumb) from me.
@yolk: I did. Check the comments - I love it 😀
Just damn excellent in every way. Although I could do with fewer glitch effects and horns at the end.
wow, now THAT was annoying
I estimate that if I were to create these graphics, I would have to spend at least 10 years modelling and drawing in a dark room. *throws in demoscene towel*
i like the music
Rocks in every department, next time don't be lazy and bring colors in :)
No way to thumb it down of course, but if I had one wish I'd love to see that dubstep+distortion go already :)
level up.
where i can find soundtrack?
Proper pacing, proper tune, proper visuals.
I don't know what planet you're on but this doesn't even remotely sound like dubstep.

Some interesting effects, but the direction is way too much lolrandom, to the point that i can't tell which effects are supposed to be video decoding artifacts and which ones are.

I have no problem with people watching demos from vidcaps but at the point where it starts to affect your judgement of a demo you've jumped the fucking shark.
Super high quality. Just not for me.

Should have known there's a style police here :) I wasn't referring to this prod alone, just fed up with these recent FLT earbreakers that a true connoisseur can probably tell apart. Used to like Muffler's tunes back in the day.
Trying to watch this on youtube, and not knowing where the demo ends and the compression artefacts begin... any chance of a high bitrate capture? :D
Music... is both good and also not my cup of tea. Visuals are stunning. Also, anything with maps gets bonus points. Sadly there's only thumb up or thumb down, but how the fuck could it be anything but up?

Jungle!
Holy crap, how do you even begin to imagine something like this? I think I need better drugs.

Watching it on bigscreen felt like watching a garbage quality stream. There's probably a top-notch demo buried somewhere and music is nice, but honestly on party I just kept wishing it would end already.
What psonice said about artifacts, plus I can't run it natively on my GTX960, just crashing after the loading screen.
Still, way beyond anything you see nowadays, so thumbs up ofc!

pretty enjoyable
surprisingly small amount of random, I'd say
fab demo + fab soundtrack <3
Enjoyed this a lot!
Minor annoyance: some visual stuff is going on entirely disconnected from the music (a lot the glitchy distortion stuff).
Also: I unchecked the looping option in the dialog.. and it looped :D

Visuals ruled, music ruled too (although I would have liked some more ninjamanmanmamanmanmaman) but human-form models were still unanimated.. :(
Found it difficult to follow, but the craftsmanship and tons of design elements are unmatched as we've come to expect :). Can't not thumb up.
rad!!
the UI scenes remind me a lot of Oblivion love it
What Gargaj said.
To the people, who actually run the executable: I experience strange pauses during execution. It looks like some scene loading / precalculation, during which the animation stop at a still frame (it takes from around 0,5-3s depending on the scene). When the scene "loads", it runs on more or less decent FPS.

In this feature presentation, post-millennium preset DNB featuring chord theory 101 slightly disconnectedly decide to meet with the very best of what demoskene-oriented visuals can bring us in the world today
HOLY COW!
What Gargaj said.
Looks and sounds fantastic. I struggled to find things to keep me focused and carry me from start to finish (could be a point, a theme, plot, or whatever, call it direction maybe?) Which is why I voted it #2 instead of #1 at asm. Great stuff regardless.
A little bit too much glitch for my taste, but apart from that... wow! So much to see and experience, awesome! I'm not a fan of this style of music usually, but it worked great here.
Some form of progress bar during loading/precalc would be nice, as I at first thought the demo might have crashed at the "made with notch" screen. But then I decided that this would be unlikely for a commercial-grade tool and waited some more. :)

well fwiw this demo royally crashed my entire desktop pc upon loading, forcing a hard reset and mildly corrupting my chrome browser installation in the process
cooolZ ! nice punchy soundtrack
Not bad, but a bit chaotic at times. Still rules because auf die Fresse.
professionally done, but left me dry
i personally don't like so much pointless lines, rotating dotted circles, bullshit motion graphics around pointless models moving to the pointless beat... so yeah, really well made, but maybe professional skills is not everything... a piggy

Time to break out this again:
Cool dribbble-like UI.
I have no idea why, but this demo reminds me "Killer" by CNCD on Amiga... somehow.

What okkie, gargaj, noby and fizzer said. This really should have won. This is a real beauty with very impressive visual quality. About audio I love it but there's no accounting for taste. Only haters thumb that down.
this is so far ahead of everything else in the scene that can anyone really compete anymore?
This deserves my thumb for sure. I don't think this demo killed the scene though :-)
not this demo alone and not killed but the discrepancy is real
Gargaj, that graph :D It's a funny/interesting read every time CNCD and/or Fairlight contributes and reviews starts to flow in.
Honestly I just feel most people who don't like this are so inbred with the scene standards they don't even know what's good outside of it anymore. Watch something outside your narrow mindset for once.
There're some geometry glitches on AMD GPUs compared to the youtube video, better check those shaders.
surely demo could have been different, more crowd-pleasing or in colours :) David Carson had it right; when someone tells you to be better or different, go look back what they've done and see if it is something you can value higher and/or you like. if not, why bother chancing anything since their stance (most likely) differ fundamentally from yours? :)
for better or for worse, always do it for yourself.
also, what Noby said.

I dont really know whats going on here. It seems like this demos is made for winning the combo, but it failed. For one thing the music does not fit at all. And like some1 said before maybe this demo is for assembly 2050. To me its just a big mess. Something that i have no idea of whats going on.
damn boois.. soo good! :)
for the most part the audio and the visual content is unmatched + greyscale didn't do justice to it either. sry :( piggy tho
Noby,Gargaj: maybe it's not just narrow-mindedness. Independently, every single effect is pretty cool, I see certain inspirations, fine, it's well made, fine, but together - to me it is just pretty yet random and a bit pointless show off.
The holy grail of TDR appreciaton strikes back with a dazzling amount of detail.
Awesome! <3
Awesome! <3
Obviously, it's good. I like the style a lot, the soundtrack is not something I enjoy. But it's easy to compare this to hold-and-modify (as it shares quite a lot in style), which is much better than this one in my opinion.
its too damn well done to not thumb this up and i really like the music too
but it has a lot of that more-of-the-same feeling...
but it has a lot of that more-of-the-same feeling...
Attention to detail and amount of work this must have taken is truly breathtaking. I can't even begin to imagine how much stuff you had to watch, rewatch and rewatch again to get every little detail in place.
About it being ahead of time demoscene wise - it might be. But I'd be more inclined to say it's a bit off from bulls eye. Overshooting a target too much means loosing most of the viewers, and I guess that's what happened to this prod.
Seeing Yolk back in business is a really great thing, and though the soundtrack is a bit off from my taste, there's no doubt there's a huge amount of work put into that as well. All the little details with glitches, retriggering, reverbs/delays, the general quality of the mixing of the voice parts. Really an amazing amount of work, no doubt about that.
So what I'm getting at, is that while the quality of the prod is off the charts, I'm still a bit undecided about whether I actually love this prod or not. Even after rewatching a couple of times, I'm torn. It might be that it's missing a key ingredient - like the chef creating a five star michellin meal but forgetting the salt in the main course. Only, I can't put my finger on exactly what "salt" would be for this prod :D
But one thing is clear - the thumb goes up!

What Punqtured said except the last paragraph.
:)
It's insane that 1) this didn't win and 2) people are genuinely arguing about whether this is good or not.
I mean, this is not the kind of music I'd normally listen to, but come on, it works wonderfully with the visuals. There's just no pleasing some people.
I mean, this is not the kind of music I'd normally listen to, but come on, it works wonderfully with the visuals. There's just no pleasing some people.
No, some people just have different tastes, and I seriously find it somewhat appalling how the fan crowd in here is suggesting that if you don't like it, it somehow must be because of you, or even your lack of cultural understanding. It's also interesting how it's always the same kind of aesthetics these discussions erupt around, and it's always kinda the same people epitomizing them and belittling others, but hey, it's clearly everyone else's fault!
That out of the way - Insanely good design as always, and effect wise there's actually a lot to see if you watch closely, and - this is my main concern - look past all the design work. Just Fucking Subjectively I feel that the visual effects and everything around it don't really work as a whole but are often at odds with each other. Perhaps that is what Punqtured meant when he said something is missing.
As for the soundtrack - clearly a matter of taste. If you like Jungle, it's probably fantastic, if you don't mind Jungle too much, it's pretty generic Amen Break+Square Wave DnB to a point that people call it "dubstep". :D Can't argue with the production values tho. Also, that horn. ;)
In the end, the thumb clearly goes up tho.

So so.
Disabling Aero under Win7 solved my sever crash issue withy this demo.
What Gargaj said.
oui
Without doubt a good demo, and deserves a thumb up. But not a winner IMHO, the visuals gets messy in some situations and the soundtrack suffered of the "heard before" syndrome.
Turns into a slide show @ 4K on 1080gtx :(
Audio sounds like someone playing an air horn over the Frameranger track.
However, visual quality is amazing (the eye/control panel scenes!) enough to make up for bad parts.

Crashed on launch.
It finally run at the third try.
The UX is not the best I'd say: bizarre default options (windowed, looping), no indication of progress at all during a fairly long load... then the demo came but the performance varies from ok to slideshow depending on the scene.
That, the music, the visuals... let's just say this really isn't my cup of tea at all.

stole my heart :)
on a technical (consumers) note:
when i run this at 1280x720 on my gtx 1060 I get stable 50 fps in almost all scenes but there are annoying freezes just before or after the transition to a new scene.
I know this is probably the engine doing important stuff in the background (compiling shaders on the fly?) but it kind of kills the flow a lot.
As the precalc/loading is already quite long im not sure if putting all that load up front is a way to go but since the scenes themselfes run smooth there must be a way to distribute the workload a little better?

^ Only 4 out of 117 people voted thumbs down so far, around PI percent. :) That's an excellent ratio really and nothing to be upset about.
You made something big with effort, that didn't quite connect with all audiences as expected or anticipated. Happens to everyone who puts out things, be it books, movies or demos.

Great!
Great shit, cool music, the scenes with the bodies...just awesome !
Hey yolk, smash, destop and mazor_
a clear thumb up, yeah!
a clear thumb up, yeah!
Sure
smooth. intense. rulez. (ye the soundtrack is too oldschool for me tbh)
Rulez obviously.. Let's just hope we don't clear the dance floor at evoke when we drop the soundtrack in our live set.
Immense artistic and technical talent at work here, one of my favourite demos in a long while, style n' skillz.
What kb said. Obviously amazing work but I personally felt the design was perhaps a bit like a lot of design for the sake of a lot of design and could have benefitted from some room to breathe, or colours :)
Anyway, great stuff.

I am torn - I kept thinking there would be a story about the character, but I didn't pick up on one. On the other hand, the graphical style and technique are superb! A worthy successor to HAM.
kickass
Solid, with a potential of being rewatched forever. Should have won the compo. All of you MacBook sceners stfu about the youtube compression :)

Insane visual design and effects.
This release got my motivation going. And I keep wondering what that weird displacement effect is actually doing.
The oblivion reference hits home a bit too close for my taste, though.

What the ... a smäsh demo at Ass. ... what year is this?
what smash said
"Smash of the year"! ;)
Definitely high production value, also probably one worth rewatching if only to catch all the small details missed the first time.
The only thing that annoyed me really, was that it kept triggering some other demos in my head, like at some point I was thinking I was watching Variform, then the sound track series of quick beats reminds me completely of another demo soundtrack (forgot the name, it's on one of the Demovibes). It may have been done on purpose, but if that's the case it's not systematic enough to make sense to me, and if not, then well that was just annoying :)

Love datamosh fx & extra sensoric overload. Usual quality ...
Regarding meaning, I play around idea of "Orwellian Dystopia" for this piece..
Btw, why even dare to thumb down stuff you don't like? Only in the case you exactly (and objectively) explain _why_..

my worthless opinion is that i super enjoyed this demo on first view, and it rewards repeat viewings as is normal with destop designs. i'm not sure why it didn't win
I believe it suffers from the claim by the soundtrack that you're going to tell a story. 2 Establishing shots, then orbiting 2mins around some anime girl's boobs and ass is less story than most porn movies have. As a "message" that you go to town, make the puppets dance and broadcast that it's fine, but calling that a story is just leading to disappointment and confusion from my point of view. (please re-read it, this is meant to be constructive criticism and I struggled quite some time to post it to avoid offending anyone as it may sound harsh.)
But that's ofc nitpicking, I cannot unsee that CF logo anymore (damn you! :D ), that pyramid city and "holographic" scenes are really interesting, the character is well proportioned, soundtrack and sync are just flawless and the amount and diversity of effects ... no words suffice.

yeah should have won, no questions about it. "usual quality" standards.
@smash: I'd agree, if pouet votes were actually objective. Which they aren't. They're purely subjective and reflect the taste/opinion of each individual.
Regarding the demo: I didn't understand it. Otherwise good quality etc etc.
Regarding the demo: I didn't understand it. Otherwise good quality etc etc.
In 1995 I saw "Deep" on Amiga and didn't understand what I just experienced and listened to. Just after a couple of re watches I know that this demos (and its remix) is something special and is far above its time. I can say the same about Sokia. I hate the music, but it's so rich in design and visuals and again far above its time!
What piggies says ..
Too messy for me.
Does this maybe need more than 3 GB VRAM? Just tested this on my new Coffee Lake i7 8700, 16 GB, 1060 3 GB and the stalling between scenes is noticible for seconds (and loading time is a dog).
@noname its the same on my 6gb 1060...
Great soundtrack and nice visuals / camera angles, but way too random for my taste.
fucking awesome
WOW that a big stuff! AMAZING!
Highly polished greyscale glitch stuff with no relevant meaning. Entertainment value is questionable. Sorry, usually I like flt/cncd demos but this one doesn‘t work for me.
brutal
Love it. Also love the glenz vector appreciation diagram in the comments above :)
