Ok guys here it is. I was working on speeding a things up on nVidia but It looks familiar to "HalfLife 2" problem. nVidia cards just don't like pixel shaders 2.0. As for the file size. The party version had 15MB (to meet the compo rules). But the sound was so distorted that I've made up my mind and put a 128 kbps version of music into archive. Have fun!

where is the music from?
added on the 2004-07-15 15:13:10 by dipswitch dipswitch
I've written it three times it is "Geinoh Yamashirogumi". This is a group of japaneese people not ivolved directly to music (ie. reporters, actors, painters but also electronic technicians) that were making music in early 80's. Their main goal was to make a japaneese folk music with electronic instruments. They succesfully made a soundtrack to a movie called "Akira"...

And please don't blame me for the music, It was so inspiring to that we thought such scenario and no other. And as for copyrights, we're not making any profit with this production and we have credited the band. This music is about 25 years old.

It's a bit boring (and seems to go nowhere), and ripping music sucks, but it looks great and there's a lot of (well-used) effort in here, so thumbs.

Bonzaj: Were you also talking to me? I know someone was, about it, and I was expecting something cool but not THIS cool. Awesome pix, and it flows nicely. Slow, yes. It's underwater.
So much work put into it.. Maybe more of a movie than a demo, but.. All thumbs up !.

However, I didn't get the story at all.. :(

Wow.. my was that slow.. even at 320x240 windowed It couldn't get past 10fps at times on GfFX5200.. gotta watch it at home on a 5600.. hope it goes better..

But other than that.. very moody.. great work.. and uhm.. was that an underwater ode to death or something? =)

Big thumb up for the whale, sunken warship and that scene in the screenshot...very impressive and the music is so cool + impressive pictures.

The only thing that was negative is that some of the "standard demoeffects" didn`t fit in the scenes.

Überimpressive :)

this thumb is for openly admitting taking dance-lessons and for referring to akira as "a movie". it sure explains why you have the time to code advanced pixelshaders. :)

i'm sortof surprised, this is much better than the final, altho it's like, "rulez" because of the work but as a demo it doesn't really work...
- what's with the fadeouts? i mean, it's ok but not when i expect something COOL to happen...
- i generally seem to have something against japanese orchestral music, i just can't seem to figure out what
- the loud, climax part of the music usually came a lot earlier than in the visuals. :(
- generally nonexistant storyline :)

but at least you have a good engine, good graphics (nice stills, xenu), and people are dying in the demo = thumbs up :D

Pretty graphics and a decent "what scene in the movie was that audio fragment in" trivia game.

It's nice but for some reason it only works in windowed mode on my computer (amd 64 3000+, 1gb ddr-ram, radeon 9600 pro)

When i try to run it in fullscreen i only get sound and a black image after it has loaded, the progress bar and loading artwork displays correctly though.

This demo makes to my brain what sitting in a couch 10 hours in row does to my feets.

*zZzzzzzzzzZZZZzzzzzzzzz*

yah, and it aint that technical impressive, and the artwork aint that good - only good part is the decently blurred room, everything has fucked up uv mappings or simply doesnt have any / just looks bad.

I really disliked one thing about this demo, the characters! The man was poorly modelled and their both's animation looked really bad from time to time. I still miss hair, that wouldn't have too be that hard implementing it, the engine looks quite powerfull so why don't have it? I also still thinks that bold model's looks like poser models and that is so boring!
On the other hand: The 2d graphics where stunning, the bed in forest picture blow me away! The main athmosphere was really nice and I do like the music (even if it's ripped!).
A good technical show but a booring demo. You get the thumb for the time spent!
rulez added on the 2004-07-16 00:16:14 by ekoli ekoli
The style is great!! Could perhaps beat H7 in style and beauty.
But the engine sucks. It is so slooooow on 2,6GHz + GFX5600 ... about 10fps (320x240, all filtering and AA disabled). Even Realstorm's raytracing engine (Still sucking Nature) is faster.

You should do a LOT of optimizing, a pixelshader 1.1 Version would be great for Nvidia owners.

I have to also stress out the point made earlier about the fades. They don't fit very well. But I can't really see how I would've solved the problem anyway.

- Caustics are nice (always!)
- Didn't like the end with the almost lovecraftian affair, it felt out of place.
- Could have played a more on building a connection between the protagonist and the ship.
- The three parts might as well be reorganized in any sort of sequence, which might or might not be a bad point.

And next time, you can rip a soundtrack from Boards of Canada, this might also work.
added on the 2004-07-16 12:55:24 by _-_-__ _-_-__
And I might as well glose a bit:

If you ever want to rip something by K.Kawai, I just can't stand is usual lyrical sugar. -- except maybe the soundtrack from Innocence. (Whose festival scene felt so demolike, actually, you got to see it)

I must admit and i said so at the time that i really didn't like the preview they put out of this, but i thought id' check it out anyways.

This full release version is pretty awesome in many ways i must say, with music from Akira( a must see for anyone who hasn't) it's not fast paced with shitty techno music granted but technically excellent with great scenes and textures and it works really well as a whole.

Extremely slow on my gf-fx5200. The demo is slow-paced and quite boring at times. But it is impossible to give this demo anything but thumb up because of the obvious large ammount of work behind it, its beauty and its artwork. Great :)

I must thank all You guys that reported crushing and are patient enough to wait for update and not thumbing down for this. I tested it on several XP's with Radeon and I had a bad luck. It didn't crush on any. But today I'll set up another XP with latest SP (maybe there's a problem)?

by: thanks for your opinion. As for K.K I mostly like the soundtrack part form Ghost 1 when there's some spots on a city and the rain is falling. The bus stops and everyone has the same
umbrellas. And that is the atmosphere and ambient that I love.

by: what do You call a protagonist? You mean the diver? There's a separate story about that diver but I didn't have time to show it. Maybe in the future I'll make a demo about that diver and the foggy weather in the mountains (and of course there must be an orchestra walking)

Ok, there was a truckload of work involved. It's all shiny and polished and you can see that this demo wants to be so much more than it eventually is.

The ripped soundtrack (my gosh, the requiem theme from akira, how could you...) distracts me and the partly disastrous character animations make me cringe. Add to that the general eventlessness and the lack of atmosphere (which is badly needed in a slow paced demo like this) and I slowly but surely start to lose interest. Imho, this sort of demo screams for mad direction skillz and a real story.

psonice: I think that You are near to that "point". The idea for the parts beggining with titles and pictures is inspired by "Dreams" by Kurosawa.

where to download the high quality .mpg of this demo!?
added on the 2004-07-16 20:17:20 by magic magic
By protagonist I meant the woman.

Somehow my mind only could explain the demo by building some sort of siren-like or woman-of-the-snow story of a spirit attracting people to their doom, or alternatively of the ghost of a person who died in the sea. (For example in the ship) But this would have required definitely more stuff, and a non sea "dream" sequence.
added on the 2004-07-16 20:29:09 by _-_-__ _-_-__
now that i've seen the capture i must admit that it is all damn pretty. i recognize the ton of work that went into this production, that's for sure.

however (and there's always an "however" :), it gets quite dull, there is no way around it.. and yes, the music-ripping issue - for sceners you simply do not rip stuff off the akira soundtrack. that is a big no-no. :)

all in all, i think it's more suited as a wild-demo or maybe a product demo for ati/nvidia (seriously; you should send it to them) and i am really looking forward to the day you create a demoscene-demo-demo-pure-demo with your impressive engine - that would probably rule (if you have the gfx-card to watch it)

Incredible graphics, I liked the wale and the diver. I did not like the female wood-puppet and the naked man. I guess proper character animation is very difficult to do and if it does not work out properly maybe you should try to design around it.

By: you're right about that "spirit attracting people to their doom". This is a story about it. And all over it is just a blind women's dream. I will make an update soon.

A question: is it a demo or not? Hmm everything is changing and this is our style. We will be doing our "demos" no matter what people will talk.

Imagine that when we'll do an 64k intro in "our" style - what You'll say then? "It is not an intro - it is wild". But it will be a coded 64 kb long artwork. So what it will be? I'm curious.

The shipwreck scene kicked major ass!!!
All the other 3d was really good too. Must have taken ages to do. The water effects and dof stuff looked the part. Colours are really well chosen all the way. Id love to see that shipwreck scene in a kind of scary atmosphere without any characters. :)

The music felt a bit cheap compared to the other stuff. Some kind of Polish ambient without drums would probably have done a better job. ;)

I liked the sinking man, but the main character didnt do it much for me. The story never caught me either. Cudos for trying the impossible though(Hollywood havent quite accomplished it either).

Well. Impressive. I don't remember a demo what caused mixed feelings like this. This is sooooo beautifull and well animated. Scenes shocking me. But the other side: booooooring like hell ! That music (rather noise): is hurts and make me sleepy. Btw i wish but i can't give a piggie ... :)

Well ... as much as I apprecciate the hard work of all those 3D models, scenes and stuff (even though those human models look a little too amateurish to me) this production is too much "wannabe" for me ... wannebe realistic, wannabe artsy, wannabe narrative. but where 3D realism isn't automatically art, the narrative part doesn't really excite me eigher. there's nothing wrong with telling stories. Moppi does a great job when it comes to narrative aspects. but hell, they wrap it up in cool style, spice it with great type design and interesting details and cuts. this is what makes their releases art and this piece just ... erm ... 3D. because this one isn't advanced enough to go beyond the pure excitement about pseudo-realistic 3D scenes. and this is where true art begins.

Great demo!
- The textures and light effects are about the best there is, there is no doubt about that.
- The character animation does not look flawless, but I suppose it is nearly impossible to do it much better without some very advanced tools.
- The music is nice. Still, I think the result would have been better, if you had made your own music while keeping this well fitting general style.
- However, I did not get the story until I read several "interpretations" of it here. I think "too slow" or "too boring" does not apply to this demo, but maybe "too unclear" does. For example, which part indicates that the woman is blind? Also, the last scene should stand in stronger contrast to the other scenes to indicate that it is outside the dream(s). Even now I think that the story and the atmosphere is not really leaving an impression on me, but unfortunately I cannot quite say why. Dreamchild, Fr-035 and especially _ , for example, simply work for me, without knowing in detail what they are about.

In any case, I have to emphasize that this is one of the best demos right now.

The title of demo reminds me refrain words of song - Underwater/Delerium

Demo is ok.
Wow.
Plastic artwork! ;)
Cheers

Like everyone said, it looks nice, but it's pretty boring. The beginning, middle and end could basically be swapped around without noticing any change in atmosphere.

Loved this one. Sad the music was not original, would have rendered ten thumbs up on its own. Awesome models, especially the ship. Animation not 100% but ok. Rulez.

This one is ok. Of course, the visual/technical sides both deserve a rulez (especially transition screens) but the content doesn't appeal to me....

very cute intro ;)
plastic really are out on their own with this one; unspeakably beautiful graphics, modelling and effects both lovely (especially 3D spkieblob thing); and subtle effects of lighting is remarkable.
wonderful score.. the modal writing alone deserves a thumbup... although a minor thing, felt that some sections (like the octave-organ+strings, and the more ambient/balinese mid section) could have used different EQ.
...
not to mention the demo style, which is very different as well.. part storyline-come-expression-art piece. impressive thingy.

how could I not vote this up yet. Very Japanese. Probably that's just a single reason why this may not be easy to consume for people who are not fascinated with .jp style of art and storytelling. After years looks very much like PS2 in HD resolution.. but hell still has some power of narration hidden inside it!

I think there are some stunning scenes that hold up nicely like the diver and the whale. The 2D stuff was very nice as well. The use of Akira OST left me with very mixed feelings however. There could be huge potential in this with original magical ambient soundtrack and better direction that would make more sense. Or maybe I just did not get it, but the direction felt very random at times whereas sometimes it felt very nice. In other words, it was all over the place.

Not many demo creators have the energy and time left to spare on thinking much about the overall direction and "artistic emotions" of a demo on top of all the hard work and technical challenges. Therefore I must thumb up strongly for this ambitious project despite its shortcomings.
