visuals were good but the demo was ruined for me by a completely cliché psytrance soundtrack with no aesthetic connection to the rest. killing point was the freestyle dancer. shame.

Many inventive effects and a good pace. The breakdance dude killed me!
Crashes fullscreen on GTX 1060 6GB on a 1440p screen.

I'm a huge psytrance fan, so this ticks all my boxes (and a few boxes I never knew I had)

@cce - checked on my old, not updated in 2 years 1060-based laptop, with whatever nvidia drivers it had on. During initial load and depack, I got a "not responding" and I just told it to wait a little longer - after that, demo worked without a crash. 1920x1080 is all my laptop can do, so can't replicate your 1440p, but otherwise, all good

Quite disjointed, but contained a bunch of really nice looking (and not so nice looking) scenes. Soundtrack and visuals didn't match that well, but all in all this worthy of a weak thumb up.
rulez added on the 2021-10-10 16:05:46 by uncle-x uncle-x
gotta agree with the soundtrack being a bit too cliché psytrance, and the visuals had little bit too much everything, but it's all fitting to the style :) So definitely a thumb!

Another strong Bitbendaz release! Keep on raving! Is that motion capture of Mygg dancing?

love the energetic goa and overall visuals, although expected more flyby-like than simple rotateZ() :) still, very enjoyable and worth to rewatch

also thanks for greets, this was totally unexpected :D

Well made for sure.
But the screen-wall setting makes it feel like an extension (or even a recycling) of Laevitas to me, though this time with different overlays, Mixamo and yet another cliché soundtrack. And while the technical execution sure is great, the visual concept lacks a certain secret ingredient elevating it beyond a 3d object rave party.

It was a fun prod to see on the big screen in the compo nonetheless - congrats on the win

Ok, so while I'm a member of BitBendaz, I wasn't involved in this prod, so I'm gonna weigh in a little here...

It would appear the most divisive element here is the soundtrack. As someone that produces and DJs psytrance, I totally don't have a problem with the track. It has a few distinct parts - I particularly like the middle breakdown with the vocal sample. Of course, psytrance/goa isn't everybody's genre of choice - it just happens to be one we enjoy and due to the level of tight sync-work that Stalvik put in, it fits the motion in my mind.

I'm curious as to what soundtrack others might have used in its place. There are definite nods to, for example, Ziphead in the visuals (mocap dancers and lasers), but to use a similar soundtrack as well may be a bridge too far.

Equally, with those visuals, it would have been too easy to pair a psy/goa tune with trippy tunnels, mushrooms, aliens, etc. That too has been done extensively before, even by folks on this thread for whom this demo didn't work for.

So yeah, not a perfect demo from us, but I feel it delivers as much fun outwardly as the folks had making it inwardly. We like to mix it up, sometimes making the demos we want to watch, sometimes making the demos you want to watch (compare, if you will, the difference in feedback Gargaj gave Laevitas to that he gave Umbra).

The next demo is already well under way and brings something different again. Keep making demos, keep evolving and adapting, but most importantly, keep having fun.

Bossman/BitBendaz^RiFT, sending peace.

Well Gargaj, you seemed to like Umbra at least, which is the one I had in mind
added on the 2021-10-12 15:36:56 by Bossman Bossman
Oh, I re-read your question and better understand it now

This one is possibly too much in the "stuff we like" side of things, but looking at the comments, some others enjoyed it too. Next one is something different again, so let's see how that one fares "in the wild" when it's ready

Well made but doesn't really work for me.

I felt a bit burnt out after Umbra and as didnt really feel like starting something ambitious again, I suggested doing something "small and quick" first, something that would take a couple of months at most. I did not want to make a lot of content again (like Umbra) so we thought doing something like a 1 minute demo with one scene would be fun.

We came up with the idea of a room with a timer counting down, showing like one or two effects during that time. But, as always, things dont turn out as planned. As we started, we got into it more and more and ended up with a whole slew of new improvements to our internal engine (Chucky). Stalvik, awesome as always, implemented things like SSAO, SSR, bone animations etc and I think I ended up creating more art than in all of the other Deadline demos combined. And yes, even the monitors were new, no recycled content here, whats the fun in that? But I did think it would be fun to include monitors as a nod to Laevitas, since this ended up being a bit of a thematic successor to it.

And maybe the music is "cliche", but it was kind of what we wanted and Mygg delivered a banging awesome track as always.

Huge thanks to everyone who voted for and liked Tempus, we love you! <3

bossman: i think the music is well produced, that's not on the table as an issue. i just see no relation from that genre with these visuals, just felt like "hei, we need sound, how about good old psytrance? sure!" and no extra thought put into finding something to match the actual visual content. atleast for me psytrance/goa is about a journey/trip. i would also hate to see the obvious tunnel and shrooms references indeed, for it's been done to death and is also cheesy as hell imho; but a room full of technological stuff and a mockup guy freestyling doesn't really fit psytrance. atleast not for me, but if it worked for others, cool, glad you enjoyed the demo. sorry for negative criticism, just pointing out what i would change to make it cause big demoshock to japanese brain.

To be fair here, the music came first and I made the visuals afterwards. And yes, I tried avoiding the obvious stereotypical stuff. So if there is a disconnect between visuals and music, thats on me. I did not want to change the music as I loved the tune.

purely asking you out of curiosity and not as a negative criticism: what in that genre made you think tech backgrounds and freestyle dancer?

To be honest, the idea with the room and monitors came first, as we wanted to have a timer counting down in the background. We did not plan having a dancer at all, but when Stalvik decided he wanted to implement an IK system into our engine, I thought putting together some kind of dance would be cool. The actual dance is what it is, could it been better, maybe, so could the entire demo. So can all demos, they can always be improved. But we are happy with what we ended up with, especially considering how quick it was put together and we had lots of fun doing it.

This one is kinda meh in my opinion. There's nothing terribly wrong or particularly great here IMO. It's a bit all over the place. It doesn't really leave me feeling much one way or another. It feels a bit like a demo that's made to check off a box, rather driven by an idea or a goal.

The industrial-ish visuals don't fit at all with the psytrance music, but that's already been covered well by Mr. Psychic Symphony above (aka "what ps said").

The return of the sugar-coated-eye-candy-goa-demo!

If anything, if feels a bit like you threw more elements on the screen over time than you managed to direct in a cohesive manner (to me).

Well done anyway.

Perhaps, I certainly went to plenty raves in industrial setting in my youth though :) Also, one big inspiration was an incredible DJ set with Ellen Allien surrounded by big screens in an old warehouse. But the rest of your feedback is valid to me.

Wow. This did not resonate with me much. It was close but yet so far.

Here's the thing. The effects and visuals are mind-blowing on their own but the problem is that there is no build-up and anticipation for them. It felt like everything was thrown at my face with the speed of light so I did not even get a chance to process what should I feel about each effect or how the music is supposed to be connected to the effects. Almost every scene was filled with constant flashing and overlapping effects which made it very hard for me to watch personally. The drama curve for this demo started at the climax and stayed there until the end.

I'd like to imagine how this demo would have turned out if the background was removed completely, tempo of the music was turned down and the kick and bassline were removed completely or turned into something more old-schoolish and goa like. Less flashing and no recycling of the previous effects. How about that!

But yeah, in the end demo looks like it was super fun to develop with all this crazy stuff going on. I think for most demo creators having fun with the process of creating something is the best part, not if the end results are aligned with other people's tastes or expectations. At least that's what I try to convince for myself when I do something related to demos on my free time.

So keep it up, and keep asking yourself why are you pushing these triangles on to the screen and what's the meaning behind them.

I have problems running it on RTX 3090 - it will display an orange/brown screen after the chucky logo instead of the demo.

Still kicks ass when watched on youtube tho :)

Yep, I think it's caused by recent Nvidia drivers, I better try to fix it and recompile it some day in close time. Thanks for the heads up!
not working on AMD/Radeon (6900XT)
will display solid grey filickering screens, which sucks.
still rulez tho.
