Nice composition but as per my twitter response - "was expecting more from TBL this time, found it a little lackluster. Packs style, but the music carried this one imo, it belongs more in the realms of contemporary digital art than demoscene I feel."

great!
Amazing in every way possible
What an amazing demo, congrats to everyone involved!
you madmen! This was one classy demo.
Pure excellence and well worth the very long road and all of the effort that was clearly involved. I love every last little bit of it. Hugely inspiring!
Instant all-time OCS/ECS #1
One can just applause to that. After one managed to get the jaw up from the floor again. Congrats! Amazing music by H0ff as expected. ;)
It's just impossible how much A500 got raped and abused here. Best WTF moment of the last decade <3 I bow to you!
this is definitely THE next step.
and who else besides TBL could make it?
and who else besides TBL could make it?
Wait WAT? It was OCS, not AGA?
Maaan...
Maaan...
Design! Emotions! Perfection!
Absolutely brilliant
you guys made a proper music video on amiga.
the quality, ideas and direction is spot-on. felt like watching new röyksopp/trentemøller stuff in a lo-fi way.
well deserves every thumb up!
btw. was the barking dog footage from the afx - come to daddy vid? :)

Hell yeah, that was IT :D Amazing fresh demo from TBL - On an A500!
TBL - kicking the limitations :D
TBL - kicking the limitations :D
oh boy this was great
Delivered goosebumps during the compo. Great atmosphere and art. Congrats!
As usual, this is perfect !
Totally insane achievement. Best Amiga 500 demo by far. Even more powerful when seeing it today while sober.
what kind of black magic...!
This is incredible. Absolutely amazing in every way. Hats off, gents!
Perfect demo production for the big screen. TBL never fail to leave everyone speechless
Many thanks for making contemporary digital art.
Also thank you for showing very convincingly that making contemporary digital art does not actually in any way contradict demoscene spirit.

Fantastic.
I just can't even.
this was super inspiring! demos can and should be beautiful.
Admirable what can still be done on an A500. I'm not a big fan of the dithered-to-hell gfx and straight up dislike the music, but there's no way im not giving it a thumbsup :)
Goosebumps during the projection.
Fantastic <3
Fantastic <3
fucking masterpiece! awesome!
great awesome cool
A banger for sure.
What an Easter egg surprise! This is exactly why I love demoscene. Amazing composition and execution. TBL continues to dominate. I'm amazed. Thank you. One ❤ Love
Amazing style (visuals & audio), effects/screens composition and script.
Hoho!
I was not initially convinced at the beginning of the demo (colors, pacing, lightning routine used too much..)
But the girl converting to 3d totally got me!
A memorable demo for sure, thanks TBL!

I'm not good at A500 context but it still blew my mind. TBL rulez!
Totally blew me away!!!
The best TBL release since Ocean Machine. I see potential for a classic here.
OCS? OMG!
and what norecess said ;-)
and what norecess said ;-)
Exactly and more than what I wanted. The music is sublime, the pixel art to poly effects the highlight and the style consistently beautiful and animated in such a wonderfully engaging way. It all fits perfectly and flows together evoking many complex emotions and associations. Thank you for this beautiful demo.
Yes! :)
Amiga is my religion and TBL are my goods! You just raised the bar for OCS demos to a divine level. This is already a classic i my book. Respect
How
Impressive.
Very unconventional OCS demo. Top quality music, visuals and code.
To me it feels a bit like Another World 2.0.
To me it feels a bit like Another World 2.0.
A visual story done properly. Total enjoyment. Thank you for all the work you put in. Love it!
Perfect production! Mega!
This production is quite the exception for an Amiga release in at least two regards:
1. It is NOT something of an intro/dentro length and amount of effects yet released as a demo. Has the length and amount of content to qualify as a proper demo which is so rare lately.
2. It is a Direction/Strong Concept focused production, not just a mish-mash of whatever was at hand.

Beauty.
This.. was.. awesome!
I’m into Amiga now
really amazing demo - the mood, the graphics, the effects, the awesome sountrack. worthy winner for sure!
Thank you.
THE best demo I've seen in a long time! <3
I’m sober again but I still think. Best Amiga Demo ever!
.awesome
ok
Really, really beautiful.
wat?
now you port your aga/060 demos to standard ocs? now thats cheating!
Unbelievable that this runs on OCS! After all these decades this hardware still makes my jaw drop... deserved winner!
A500 demo over the top!
Awesome demo!
good!
Worthy winner, perfectly freshly designed amiga demo, just amazing....
ECS? I can't believe it! Outstanding
good shit
Who needs AGA? No One, OCS is all you need ;)
HD-Version would be nice!
Epic in so many ways !!!
Burial 🤐
that was just awesome. In begin I was not so fond of the gfx but as it progresses, the demo mood and tech are just amazing. Great work and an inspiration for us all.
Fantastic ! What else ?
Stunning
AMIGAA
whoah.
Holy shit. Could you imagine sending this demo back to the 80s? You would blow their effing minds. Amazing.
Cool story, but I like to watch real-time demos. A demo builds up to an awesome part and then it's an animation... It's just such a huge letdown when you're watching. Suddenly it's the opposite of awesome and feels like watching one of those intro disks that came with 1991-1992 games, you know?
wow, amazing!
A little bit to much layered image stuff in the beginnig but the second disc part was perfectly balanced with effects - this is art and pure enjoyment.
Poetry!
absolutely astounding during the compo, but after watching it again im starting to think the hoffman soundtrack is not the best fit. either way, it's really a masterpiece.
This demo masterfully works with the platform limitations instead of against them. The entire aesthetic and the beautiful backgrounds makes it look like low-poly flat-shaded models is a conscious choice made to enhance the look, not a limitation of the A500. Great stuff.
Fabulous! What a production. Also the music is absolutely mindblowing and fits perfectly into the demo and creates a unbelievable atmosphere. Masterpiece.
Awesome prod. Fantastic design, direction and music!
jaw dropping sweet!
no idea what that amiga thing you all talking bout is but holy cow that was such a blast
This one was just amazing to watch.
Amigas die of scaredness when they see the disk of that one approach! Such a sublime piece. The hard work shows indeed! Tons of iconic scenes (and best lightnings ever too :D).
Superb Demo! Especially i liked two things on this demo. (1) the smooth animations of the wolf in the woods (2) the moments when painted pics were transformed in vector-graphics and then animated.
nice
What Sesse said. This is an amazing demo for working within full knowledge of the Amiga's limits instead of trying to break them. I know how nearly everything was done in the demo and I'm still incredibly impressed.
I look forward to an explanation of how the poly anims were compressed -- I'm guessing differential slices like we (and many others) did to eliminate overdraw.

I'm not a fan of story/animation demos, and share much of Photon's feelings, but the sheer amount of artistry, and what was required to get in on screen, is astounding. A worthy winner in what was the greatest Amiga compo I can remember.
Also, I liked the rubber cube :-)
Also, I liked the rubber cube :-)
OCS? no waaay!!!
TBL killed the Demoscene.
Again.
Again.
As someone with no experience with the platform, it's difficult for me to gauge the technical quality of the production. I can see it's well above many of the other creations, I can see it showcases effects that would usually mean AGA, and I can see the smoothness of the animation. This is already very impressive, alas, I am certainly missing a lot of the magic here.
Regardless, even for the technically illiterate, the quality of the art and direction already make this show unique. I still need some time to process and fully appreciate it, but this was obviously a major moment at the party, and my favourite prod there.

instant classic
Was hearing chatter about this new TBL demo the whole party, setting this up as the the demo to end all OCS demos.
My expectations were set so high I was sure I was gonna be disappointed when I finally saw it on the big screen.
Turned out I was wrong, the rumors were completely correct, and evenmoreso.
Such a strong Amiga compo this year as well with all the other amazing prods, I think we haven't seen this level of competition in the Amiga scene since the mid 90's. This makes me so happy, and I hope it's a sign of things to come!

all hail our lords and saviours, tbl
I was just blown away by this one, I love how it has a very defined theme.
This is insane. Love it.
This was really awesome, it blew me away while i was watching it at the compo on Revision!
What everyone (except one) said, still searching my jaw on the floor
Nice to see TBL do a500 !
Efford and Passion! Well done lads!
Keep enjoying this Amiga thing! Till next time!

Absolute killer A500 OCS demo. Loved the vectorized part in the end. Still hard to decide the true winner between EON & DE PROFUNDIS, as both of them are mindblowing :)
WTF.
Insane, got tears in my eyes. The moments after 3:40 in the demo... A500? A500! AMIGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!11

awesome
alda krass!
Stunning in every possible way!
This was awesome!! Congratz on both winning the compo and best of party!!
Kalms, we also had a nice talk outside about how you guys make your demos. You might remember a bunch of guys standing near the showers while walking back inside when I raised my beer bottle and cheered with you.
Thx for the talk man!

An A500 masterpiece. Floating boy & girl at the end look kinda goofy and broke the magic a bit, but that's just nitpicking.
@jiuice - exactly my thoughts. Congratulations to the whole team. Also being proud that it wasn't our ass whipped by TBL again in the compo :)
Reminiscent of the graphical style of Another World, only with significantly better framerate. Shivers at 3:48.
Magnificient. I love when people use older platforms to make good concept demos instead of effect collections.
That was absolutely awesome! I've seen PC-Demo quality on the Amiga! THIS is what development means. I was absolutely speechless.
Jesus Christ, guys.
what zden would have said ...
As someone already suggested, let's time machine this one back to 1990 :)
After having watched it again a few times today, I'm still speechless *wipes away tear*
Killer..
Solid art direction and perfectly executed. Congrats guys.
Magnificent on all levels. What a fine day in AMIGA demo history this was!
Tbl rulez
Amazing!
Well done!
Has anyone managed to run this on real HW with Gotek+Cortex floppy emulator? For me it fails to detect the disk swap, so the icon keeps showing then after a while garbage graphics appear.
Great work guys, congratulation!
Did not disappoint, to say the least. Some really unique and previously unseen stuff in here.
Kicks ass!
God exists, hallelujah!
One of the best demos ever for the A500
Oh, vanilla a500 + TBL = Miracle
I was baffled for a moment when the cube appeared, because it felt kind of an underwhelming for an effect in a TBL demo. Then I realized I was actually watching and OCS demo and my mind was blown even more.
As far as storytelling, composition and general demo choreography goes, this is probably one of the most impressive works of art I have ever seen made by the demoscene. The fact that the technical side is mindblowing is almost beside the point.
Beautiful.

Holy sheep, Masterpiece! :O
Although I'm not an Amiga guy, I have to admit that this prod rulez! I think that Hoffman's soundtrack does a much of atmosphere, it fits perfectly.
Those polygon animations reminds me my loving Another world. ;)

Also - another example of witchcraft.

great!
Holy moly! Can't remember when I watched an Amiga demo more than a dozen times in a row the last time! Amazing stuff, best story telling ever in a demo, outstanding soundtrack and design. This one is coming from another world. Shivers, speechless, end. THANK YOU!
Great work...As always, TBL leaves me wondering about the coding details of every part of the show.
"My life is now complete." - d.fox
effects wise it's not that mind blowing as we've seen all that 2D/3D vectorization stuff in 1992 already, but, damn, doing it with a modern twist and strong narrative makes it actually very, very good!
beautiful
looks really nice... but what photon said...
only "nice" effect was the cube... the rest is more or less one effect a polystream... so piggy for me...

very nice demo!
Don't you forget that parts without 'in your face' effects/routines are hell of a code too, sometimes even more. Here, nice routines were seamlessly embedded into story/graphics which seem to confuse people looking purely for code. Yep, story demos still can have a great code, surprise, surprise! :D Rotating cube was actually the only part that stood out being rather loose fit.
A really nice and atmospheric demo. Good job!
O.M.G.!
Sorry, seems like a glorious bitmap scrolling and vector anim fest to me. The only realtime effect worth mentioning is the tiny textured Cube.

You sure that cube is not anim fest either with selective line display? ;)
So f*cking great!
If only I could find a good emoji for Kalms reaction to seeing my reaction to seeing this on the big screen !!!!
This was the perfect ending to the best Amiga compo for what seems like an EON

My favorite thing about this demo is how efficiently The Black Lotus demonstrated how effects are an obsolete part of Demos and graphical work and raw emotional content are far more important and noteworthy. Meaningless technical achievements fall into desuetude as the avenues for exploitation grow ever more narrow. Maybe then Demoscene will finally reach maturity as we realize the value of an artist is far greater than that of the coder.
It's actually really great how we all seem to see through the slightly larger pixels straight into the demo; not even many PC productions achieve that, and we're talking about an A500 here, something I—and many others—missed during the compo entirely. Soul transcends all else.
I cried during the encore at the end of the prize ceremony.

Runs on a regular factory A500? OCS!
This increases the appeal!
A such nice and mature way of telling a beautiful history using the effects and demoscene stuff as a vehicle to archieve, better than being FX the concept on a pastiche dadaist-cake with 150bpm hard-tech-rave music.
You can still raising a couple of degrees the temperature of a CPU by telling a story and amusing while showing your tricks.
The rational and clever use of the hardware limitations to show us a "drawn" reality intead of trying to failing reproducing true reality at 2fps.
2d and 3d wisely mixed.

Watched already 5+ times, really awesome demo!
Has to go down as one of the best Amiga OCS demos of all time! Yes every demo is not pure technical wizardry, a demo is to entertain and amaze, and even 32 years later when a demo does that, even more so now than in say 1992, then you know it will be remembered as a classic. Bring on the non trackloading version so the rest of us can watch on real hardware!
While almost everybody else in the compo tried to make their demo look PC'ish, this one took the limitation of the machine and just ran with it.
I had had goosebumps at the fox scene, so smooth and damn good!
I had had goosebumps at the fox scene, so smooth and damn good!
amazing
Hmmm, somehow didnt really catch me. Feels too much like 9 fingers 2019. Only without the action. On the other hand it contains subpixel rendering on OCS. And that´s something really hard to achieve in proper quality and speed. So piggy it is...
total & utter rulez! Waiting for hdd-friendly version!
I like it very much. About technical section, I would like someone to explain to me how the hell have played a 500k mod in a stock A500. What kind of witchcraft is this?
best production of the party! good that
Quote:
it belongs more in the realms of contemporary digital art
Watching it again I get this feeling I'm watching a video done by someone emulating old computer style (snes/amiga) using a modern machine and compositing software without having to actually deal with the old limits (like some pixel-art inspired video or synthwave flick... or PICO-8!?!). Except it is actually running on the real thing with all the pain that involves.
This was fucking fantastic!!!
Definitely an ECS milestone, please, please do a detailed writeup about the used tech.
Great
Impressive storyline and music!
Graphics could be more polished.
Code, Spaceballs already invented it 25 years ago.
In any case, a fascinating show!

As always fantastic demo from TBL!! Thank you!! :)
wonderful, great story & design!
Streaming samples, there must be some seriously interleaved data on those disks. :D
Tries to find something apposite to say - fails miserably.
TBL artistry is unmatched, snuggles down comfortably to the lower end hardware and the storyline is stronger and more coherent with this one.
Art for art's sake,
TBL for God's sake.

Thanks for hitting me over the head with this thought, Loady. It didn't come to me during the compo, but you're absolutely spot on. This feels like what Valenberg did for Pertubator's "Sentient" ... but on the real genuine article.
Guys nagging about the "missing tech" and "lack of records broken", I don't know what the fuzz is all about. Reading the info text of the production it is pretty clear where the tech and the record breaking happened: behind the curtain in order to asure the execution of this marvellous animated graphic novel.
And the Hoff better starts writing that paper about the sample switching ... and deliver it at 10 a.m. XD
I'll be honest - this demo single-handedly reignited my love for the demoscene and inspired me to initiate and contribute to more productions in my group.
It is such an amazing production, the pacing, the moods, the execution... when the sleeping girl started turning I lost my shit.
I watched it about 20 times now, I showed it to my brother... my parents... friends... everyone. They all love it, even if they have no idea what the demoscene is.
Mad fucking props.

Very well deserved win.

For those complaining about the vector animation, really, are we having the same argument we had back in 1992?
What did this and the winning PC demo have in common? Direction. It matters much more than effects these days. Also, I think we've been so jaded with TBL's 060 releases that some people are forgetting this is a 7 MHz machine with 1 MB RAM... oh, and running from two floppy disks.
A couple nitpicks though: the lightning could use some anti-aliasing, and the graphic of the two people at the end didn't look good, compared to the rest.

Holy shhhit! I can't imagine how I would feel seeing this on my A500 even 20 years ago, as today it makes me eye watery. And imagine seeing it in 1987... This prod alone would justify creation of that soul-having piece of hardware. When I saw that lovely girl in this demo I thought "this is Amiga" : )
Great graphics and music! I simply love such amazing graphics with limited color palette. Also thumbs up for doing 3D and FMV on Amiga 500!
Really awesome!
Thank you TBL ^ ^
amazing direction
Nice one.
killer soundtrack, that alone deserves a thumb already. i'm with some of the naysayers on the effects: i now shit about the constraints the ancient hardware puts onto creativity, but i see a lot of scrolled and playback stuff. There is little else going on. That said, it's still uberawesome, a piece of art in its own category =)
\o/
Instant classic! Wow...
There's for sure a lot of work involved (story telling graphical art, music, story telling). But I'm still wondering about the technical aspects vs machine specs.... Nice to watch anyway.
Decent. :)
Wow. Definitely in my top 10 OCS demos and i'm a huge fan of Hoffman's music in this. Amazing to see stuff like this being created in 2019. Respect to you all.
The only thing that jarred for mewas the end graphic of the two people floating. It just looked at odds with the art direction of the rest of the demo. Also, my stock A500 it doesn't detect the disk swap and I end up with garbled graphics.
Otherwise beautiful.

I just saw it right now on an A600 with a CRT monitor and a GOTEK (FlashFloppy firmware). It looks incredible.
Congratulations to the entire TBL team!
There are people here and there saying that this demo is just an animation. I would like to see them trying to make a better demo in this style. :]

This, this, this many times. Eon doesn't simply set the new bar for A500—it sends it through the stratosphere chasing the Roadster near the Mars orbit. Every single aspect polished to perfection, be it direction, visuals, or music. Oozes confidence and style from the first to the last moment. Consistently provides superior aesthetics without any regard for sanity or hardware limitations. Works as a standalone music video. Wow. Holy shit. This is just... Wow! I feel incredibly honored to have seen this in person at the party.
whoaoaooaoaooaooaoaooaoao
Lurking on Pouet since 15 years or so, but never registered.
This demo now made me register finally, as I felt the urge to give thumbs up!

bravo pour moi la meilleure demo a500
damn! yes yes yeeess! and this msx track: the class itself
How you layer graphics and effects is just brilliant and you can keep it up throughout the whole demo.
Also clever use of shadows and the background and let the viewer's perception fill in the rest in the 3D parts. I didn't notice this at all when watching it the first time.
Really great work in all departments! And happy 30th Anniversary :-)

Probably everything is already written above. Eon shows how much you can (still) do with our good, old A500. Great work! I hope it is not the end of OCS surprises from you guyz.
Somehow I cannot quite make the connection of the scene with the two levitating (?) at the end with the rest of the demo, and it was probably the weakest scene overall, but wow - this is just excellent. So much style, and everyone complaining that there is no tech wankery in there should just read h0ffman's write-up. Double thumb up!
I hugely appreciate the write-up by H0ffman and I hope that more write-ups will follow. Very inspiring work!
All important things have been said. It's really impressive. Here we can realize the real value of the coder because he creates great tools great artists can work with.
Many thanks for the music system write up, this is supra-interesting.
Nice writing H0ffman! (still reading it, very interesting ;p)
this demo is a pefrect litmus test separating the people who dig the deep meaning of the demoscene and the "waa-waa-i-need-realime-3d-cubes-and-plasmas"-guys who stuck in 90s for good.

Jesus, since when do you decide what matters to other individuals?
If direction and fancy scrolling pictures are all that matters, then what has the demoscene to offer compared to pre-rendered motion graphics?

If I compare this production to e.g. the classic Hardwired, I feel the latter still produces more wow-factor and goose bumps coming from two floppies. And that demo was done in 1991.
stock a500? jesus
Crazy for Amiga 500
what a prod! the wolf in the woods alone deserves a thumb. and the scene with the washing machine cube is on point with the tune. goosebumps. fantastic transition from 2 to 3d at the girl. deserved winner.
hardwired's fucking boring
noby: Still at least this and Hardwired have an identity. Even the game-changing groups like MFX, Orange or Panoramic Design took the origins of the medium on-board.
Masterpiece
I think people complaining about the vector animations are missing a key point.
Given floppy disk speed, the computing power of a 7Mhz 68000, and the slowness of chipram, compared to the number of polys, the amount of animation and the framerate, these parts are not a cop out, they are actually incredibly technically impressive in and of themselves, not just pretty.
As far as I can tell, the code is just as hardcore as the design. So even if you judge this on the traditional technical metrics on which demos were judged, it's still amazing.

A fresh high quality production for ECS. Incredibly amazing.
Because of this I'm gonna undust and restart my A600 today. #impressed #stunned #wish #1992
Absolute sorcery.
That what fucking ace for a simple A500. Would be still good @68060 ;)
This is a super piece of work.
What spike said.
Ah, meh. Thumb for great music and gfx. Code-wise this thing is weak, though.

And that's just the sound-department.
It was awesome being in this übercompo with you guys. Everyone was so excited afterwards with that many top demos in the ring.
Just rewatched Eon on my A500 at home now. The amount of work you put into this is enormous, and the reported 1000+ hours for the graphics and direction alone are insane. What a dedication to details. Good start with the phone ringing, clever use of depth parallax in 2D and 3D, and a great dance with references to 9 Fingers. Lovely! Makes me wonder if the dancer in Rift was already deliberately "downscaled" a bit to prepare viewers for this?
Overall a piece of art. Loved every minute of it. Respect!
PS: The gfx when man and women finally meet are a bit weird. She looks teethless and he looks like a geezer. But maybe they are just surprised? I would be.

i'd also like to join the group remarking about the last shot of the two people: it looks awkward and not up to the quality of the rest of the demo, but also too direct and obvious (in the spirit of "show, don't tell")
A deserved winner of the whole Revision 2019! About the demo itself: super nice to see such quality implemented on good old A500 - a very well executed and solid demo proving why everybody should finish their prods in time ;).
You rarely see such good design & tech in any demo <3.

Fantastic!
This is a great demo! I really enjoy it. Good work guys!
Second thumb for the extreme tracking efforts🤙
Great direction!
Astonishing. A breed of its own.
Oh, it's so funny to read comments from clueless dudes who don't even know where to start to make anything close to this, much less on a 500. ;P

THIS is coding, THIS is a demo that runs on real hardware and not "just" a good 3D software engine that draws on a framebuffer with a c2p routine and streamed mp3 music, which runs on emulators and requires a CPU power that the Amiga has never reached...
Pure art and genius.
Pure art and genius.
Jaw dropper, however the man vs woman scene killed it a little. Still worthy winner and thumbs of course.
Well deserved 1st place in the compo and well deserved "best in show" overall!
Truly an artistic masterpiece!

Really good. Builds atmosphere. Plz make a final with a good last scene.
A little bit slow at the beginning but the end is really perfect with this clever 3d. The soundtrack is superb too!
A great success!!
A great success!!
I prefer demos with more effects and less animations, but ok, this one is fine.
Breathtaking design and a truly killer soundtrack.
Nice atmosphere... sometime look like 9 fingers/spaceballs.
Great.
Great.
Wow. One of the best demos ever for me.
Any ideas how to get it run on a A600 2mb and gortek drive?
I tried to switch all drives off except DH0: it boots direct to hdd still.

Amazing job! Great demo! Instant classic on A500
@emoon
Yes. In boot menu. Advanced options. Disabled all except df0:
I took the ADFs linked here and put them on the flash drive.

fuck off

I cried when watching it

Art masterpiece ! Awesome Amiga 1200 demo ... Oh, wait !
I noticed that, most screens only use 16 colors, maybe an Atari STe could be considered using the Hacked Lance MOD replayer ?
This is fantastic ! :)
Excellent music and great design which makes one forget about the pretty neat code, i.e. it's not important if what you can see on screen was hard to code or not. You just watch the demo and feel entertained, really great work.
Absolute highlight of the party - I finally ran it at home on my A500 and still can't believe it's running on the good ol' stock Amiga. Masterpiece. The flow, the atmosphere, the music the direction is all top notch.
Thanks for the (music) tech write-up, I hope there's more to come.

Will take some popcorn, a nice sofa and will watch it again...
The fluent Tai Chi moves look awesome.
I was wondering how the sound/textures/other streaming data was crammed into running on the Amiga 500 towards the end of the demo, when watching at Revision.
Thanks for shedding a bit of light on this already :)
Allthough I'm "too young" to appreciate OCS demos fully, this is just a great demo in its own regard, let alone that it's running on an obsolute computer :)

stunning.
Wow, that's beautiful!
I certainly have high expectations on future releases from the people trashtalking the tech behind this.
I like the comparison with Hardwired, because it well illuminates the key difference between a demo like this, and a demo like that.
Hardwired is all about the tech, and it's very explicit with what's happening at every point in the demo. Don't fully grasp what you're seeing? No worries, there's a text on the screen summarising the technical details of every scene, to make sure you don't accidentally miss a coding achievement.
In Eon, the tech is not part of the showcase, except indirectly (though I could argue the cube was a bit explicitly showy). Immediately after seeing this I thought of Booze Design's 2005 gem of a demo, "Tsunami", which some people had similar complaints about. "Where is the tech??". Of course it was there if you knew where to look, but the demo was so mature and confident it didn't feel the need to focus on each and every transgression of made limits, instead relying on understatement and subtlety to convey the achievements to those who would get it.
As I recall HCL eventually posted a list of all the world-first and records in the demo which seemed to dampen the "wheres mah tech??" criticism somewhat.
But just as an exercise, why don't the good Amiga coders who've complained about the lack of technical achievement here (I've seen a couple of you) just get together and release a proof-of-concept demonstrating that this sort of thing isn't hard? Should be a fairly quick effort, right?

I really like how smooth the animation. Great story telling.
Enjoyed the writeup about the music. A writeup for the whole demo would be lovely
damn fine!
I make a comment after a long time, but certainly, this must be good demo.
The power which stands out was a point as hardware as AmigaECS and was perfect in all sound and production.
Starstrack was more impressive in the TBL demo I saw, but this demo feels a new challenge.
rulez.

Also, how is this even possible....
Just great.
Totally freaking awesome!

Awesome!
Superb OCS DEMO. Awesome !!
This is just awesome.
Watched it on my A500+ and I am still totally flashed!
A WHDLoad Slave would be awesome though :)

Awesome production, and a nice surprise to see an A500 demo from TBL! It actually encouraged me to refurbish an old A500 to run this. The highlights for me were the rotating cube, wolf scene and dance scene. However the quality of some of the still graphics did not do the A500 justice (ordered dither looks terrible) and it would have been nice to have a few more cool effects like the rotating cube. I hope TBL will do more A500 prods in the future as there's definitely a lot more for them to explore on the tech side.
Interesting read. Deluxe68 sounds quite useful
Masterpiece of design, styl and hard work.
Hi here ^^
First: it's an awesome OCS jaw-dropping demo ! gg
second: any news about the final version ? I crave to launch it on my real A1200 from the hard drive ^^

OCS?! Really?! :) I didn't believe it! ...Oh! AWESOME!
un-fkn-real
Thanks Kalms! I had my nose pressed to the CRT trying to figure out how the everliving phek this subpixel movement was done.
Magic!
So fascinating and impressive. Thanks guys!
Great demo, however h0ffman's soundtrack borrowed a little bit too much from
sabrepulse - banish (especially after 1:12)
Beat, bass synth and atmosphere comes very close
- or is this a coincidence?

Really enjoy the writeups. Shows the amount of tech and care to details that went into this.
Is it possible to make this run on an A1000 with FastRAM?
On my setup the demo starts and works fine until the first solar eclipse right after the asteroids flyby part at the beginning. After that i'll get corrupted graphics and audio. :-/

nice demo, cool music (especially the first half) and great breakthrough performance but it should be presented in Wild category...

Why exactly? It doesn't need any exotic Amiga hardware configuration.

due to the number of animations... nevermind.
Did you actually read any of the tech writeups? This demo is a little bit more than just a random animation player.
Forgotten thumb.

Oh but I do mind. Please read the writeup to the development of this production (by Emoon, Kalms and Hoffman respectively).
Animation or not, there's enough coding kung-fu in there that totally legitimates this being shown in the proper competition, additionally it being executable on a standard Amiga 500 + 512k. You know that "Wild" is reserved for exotic hardware?
i already said "great breakthrough performance" so i KNOW there is a lot of work for this demo. but if i see animations - they're animations, simple.
and i know that wild is for exotic hardware, but also for extra-exotic prods (dos isn't so exotic but some sizecoding works from 2018 iirc was in wild category) and also "animation prods", and i consider this one is the "animation prod".
you can call me "toxic thumbdowner" if you want... because it's partly true.
(and i think these posts are not worth to be here... nobody wants be banned, right? :D )

Not my cup of tea... sorry.
I think demos are always a balance between realtime calculations versus size and memory usage. The interesting prods come forwards when you limit all of these.
oh wait! someone is bitching about a TBL demo having animations. good to see nothing changed in the last ~15 years :P

hell yea, soundtrack and demo pretty neat, one of the best 2019 amiga ocs demo
Mindblowing! This is indeed a masterpiece! Wow...
thumb up!!!

Heck yeah, amazing!

This is the WTF for oldskool platform. Great soundtrack by H0ffman, cool graphics by Louie and etcetera
fuck
Does anyone know if there are still plans to release a verison of this that works on AGA?
Absolutely loved it. Beautiful piece of art, and the fact it was done on the OCS, superb. The perfect demo.
WOW!!! <3
please aga hdd support ! :-)
classy
Real masterpiece!
Cowabunga!
Incredible! It's so future retro but with a modern soundtrack!
There were quite a few write-ups added to the authors' website without announcements here, so for all those who were following them as eagerly as I did, here is a link to a seemingly full collection: http://tbl.nu/posts/.
AMIGAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
Very little redeeming factors in this kitsch- and animfest. Deserved winner of any animparty.

I would have thought that an Amiga coder has more appreciation for the coding challenges needed to pull a demo like this off. (Also there are readups explaining some of them actually)
By far my favorite TBL demo, for once not an (admittedly, technically badass) salad of their usual gimmicks, but a stylistically, narratively unified demo. Eerie atmosphere, and a fav theme of mine.
Wow.....
venom, this demos requires one disks too many, and on one disk it still wouldn't be a great demo for my taste. What would a writeup change?
The soundtrack is great, the technical nitbits getting around the memory limitations of the machine and the tooling are interesting (but e.g. sample swapping was done in 1992 (JoEs) and sample mixing for drum loops is, well, no magic).
However, this does not save it from having weak transitions (with visual bugs), ugly 8+7 colour graphics (is there any pixel art or are these just downcoloured 3D renders?) and well, yes, most of it is pre-calculated animation. The scenes also feel pretty much random. For 2019, I just can't see the innovation.

How about that subpixel precision blitter line algorithm by Kalms? Isn't that completely new either?
I'm referring to this technique.
Anyway, I'm not going to forget in 1995 when we made our first demo "Kugalskap" in Amos using prerendered animations and TBL crew shouted "Animakjooon" in disgust followed by 3000 nerds booing my ass. Now look at yourself!!

2 ugly colours, no design, forgettable music.
What I forgot to thumb this? Stunning in person at the party, on youtube, AND on the hardware. I have no idea what demo Kimi was watching.

Scali had done this in 2011 already, see https://scalibq.wordpress.com/2011/12/28/just-keeping-it-real-part-5/
It also was discussed on EAB: https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=62607
(CPU driven subpixel line drawing was probably around two decades earlier.)
Nonetheless, I am very grateful for Kalms making his code available.
However, in EON the subpixel blitter line drawing is not used in many places, because the animplayer uses the CPU to draw the lines (without subpixel resolution AFAIK).
Hi emoon,
Wonderful work, simply amazing styling. Not a huge fan of the ominous diamond lightning thingy, but I get what it symbolises.

Hello. A year and a half has passed since the promise that a demo with the support of HDD and AGA will be released, we are tired of waiting)) Will there be an AGA and HDD demo at all? I apologize for my English, I am writing via google translator :)
my fave Amiga Demo
i didnt even thumb this classic up... until now. soundtrack rules!!!
Great music and impressive tooling, but I agree with Photon and Bifat.
Almost 3 years have passed, the promised version of AGA - HDD is still missing. I'm still waiting, waiting, waiting...
Finally, had a chance to see this one on my real Amiga 500! What an outstanding production! Hard to believe it uses only OCS/ECS and looks maybe even better than most AGA demos!
What an incredible atmosphere these artists managed to create, with the music as the star leader.
Still one of the best demo on Amiga !
@emoon : do you still plan to release a "final" HD loadable version ?

just wow! great atmosphere. Liked the transition to 3d vector movement extremely!
What Scali said / 2019-04-22 18:39:42.
I like the plot and the atmosphere, and the music continued to echo in
my head for quite a while after I had watched the great show.
By the way, there is an informative talk of Kalms about "advanced
basics" with the title "High-performance code on Amiga 500"

Gets better over the years ... like a good wine.
Solid, remarkable presentation.
Amazing execution!
GR8! Specially, the developed toolset is mind-blowing. One thumb is simply not enough. Thank you.
One of the best Amiga demos ever!
Love this and needed to make sure I'd given it a thumbs up!
...final? ;-)
Good but not great... And it's not for the OCS what Starstruck was for AGA.
It was 2023, and no one saw the promised version for the AGA and HDD...
What LeGend said, with adding that the soundtrack is brilliant.
Vraiment top !!!
Damn!
