some pretty unusual effects there, at one point i've got an impression that there is even a narrative at play )) but the music sync is too off.
When the greetings came i was sold if not before.
This is awesome. So many variations and fx in 4k/
Cool :)
Huge !!!
Sorry if it feels wordy, but I really feel the need to gush all over this product before I go to bed. I normally don't care too much about the Spectrum, or most pre-68000 platforms in general, but this went so, so far above and beyond my expectations I actually ended up considering Megademica my favorite prod of the entire party—which had no shortage of good candidates, to be fair. During the compo I was continually impressed by the amount of different visual content and the excellent track. I even thought it would work just as well as a full-size demo because the concept didn't seem significantly bottlenecked by size; I'm all down for moody demos with lo-fi effects.
And then the second part happened, and I was like, "wait, WHAT?" And it was even better than the first—which was already a solid demo irrespective of the size. Again with an even more excellent track.
And then the ending happened and delivered a hardcore smackdown to what was left of my sanity.
Seriously, thank you so much. This demo raised the bar in so many ways for me as a viewer, and very likely for the other oldskool system 4k producers as well. I think some good comparisons would be what cdak did for the PC 4k scene in 2010 and what fr-08 did for the 64k scene ten years prior: delivering a shocking amount of quality content in a size-limited category. If this doesn't win I'm gonna riot. (And then gonna riot again if it doesn't get nominated for the best oldskool intro or something.)
Out of curiosity, what's the rundown on the space consumed by different parts of the demo? Maybe you could do a small write-up or something?

Superb 4Kb full of awesomeness!
Wow!
how you implemented dither 2x2 ?
4KB? not 4MB? if i had enough glöps, i would give this a pcdc!
moozooh pretty much said it all. I have absolutely no clue whatsoever, how and what you've done here. Probably some kind of sorcery.
Write-up would be much appreciated, although magicians usually don't reveal their tricks either

amazing how Serzh still pushing the borders of impossibility

mildly above awesome and impossible.
My daughter and I like Megademica 4K.
just amazing
fuck yeah!
yea fuck!
Such an amount of fx that still improve during the show, with even bonus in the sound. :O
Serzh never disappoints + awesome music given the constraints
Amazing amount of content, plus, as a coder, I always look forward to your and baze's intros abusing chunks in new and innovative ways. Also, I am glad that you recognized how tiresome it is to watch an effect for longer than 3-4 seconds, so the chosen tempo of cutting is absolutely spot on, congratulations.
However, I do not like it, sorry. Too slow and dirty for my liking. I'll probably spend more time disassembling this than watching this.

compression intensifies
3 x "well that's pretty impressive for a 4k" with growing levels of intensity.
Absolute amazing!!
I don't know what to say. This is witchcraft.
Co to kurva do prdele je?!
oh my god, that was great. Thx!
One of the best prods on any platform ever. It uses the machine's features, not as restrictions but as tools. Awesome. I think this was the best prod of the whole party.
In the next 4k, I guess there will be a music generator, and it will produce new music for at least a few weeks?

shockingly original effect and content somehow in just 4kb
4k?! WOW So So good. Unbelievable!
well done!
even the guy next to me that looked like a scene vet wasn't sure if we were in 4K or 64K category
massive work here, great job!
massive work here, great job!
AMIGA!
awesome
Amiga shouting spectrum thumb! As for the large number of tunnel/lut variants in here combined with the Spectrum's limited memory limited time to calculate new tables while running the previous tables.... I have no idea how this thing works
Madness!
Honestly, I am impressed with all these variations! This is awesome!
now this is insane!
mind. blown.
I have no clue how you managed to pull this off, but holy hell was it impressive! It just kept on and on and never got the slightest bit boring. Already complimented Gasman for the amazing soundtrack. I'm still in awe about how you guys managed to squeeze so much into such little space. Absolutely brilliant!
ace!
was watching this during the compo at the bar when my viewing got interrupted for a fairly lengthy chat. Finished talking, turned round and saw .. it was STILL running!
insane! would love to read a write up on how this was achieved.

Don't know anything about anything oldskool, but I know this is MADNESS.
How is this even possible. And just when you think it's over...
Whaaaaaaat??? I don't know what to say... Outstanding work!!! Impossible is possible ;)
Prod of the year for me...
I am really intrigued about the timing of the table calculations. Shared with the runtime? Or maybe performed on the small pauses?

Very stylish! Like!
And all that content packed into just 4K.

Wow, colorful surprise at the end!
Awesome work!
Awesome work!
After a whole pair more of views.
I can't stop wondering how this marvel might work.
My first guess is that all scene are pre-rendered 16 frame loops.
All "videos" stored in 4k, using some kind of nice hyper-clever global redundandy character-block compressor-decompressor, so each scene/cut is pre-rendered using realtime versions of the scene produced by, what seems an Amiga or Win32 PC raster engine, and then ported to a 32 x 24 char SCR frame by frame, compressed by overall redundancy and played.
It's my guess...the other way around is coding all the scenes, in realtime, in 8bit asm with no floating point ...just take 7 scenes and try to imagine the size of the assembler code in bytes just might eat the whole RAM of the poor speccy, and you just reproduce the scene 2 seconds or less? with no variations on the tunnels trajectories, plasmas or spirals? does not make sense.

Even if it seems to consist of one routine, you managed to cram a lot of matrices into 4k <3
What YERZMYEY said, pure wizadry, pure madness coming from Russia+UK. And it's 48K, not 128K!!! One of the best 4K on any 8bit platform without a doubt.
Wow!
This one blew me away at the party. Massive respect.
Overstays its welcome by a few minutes, but still stunning. It would be interesting to know how exactly is it made - is it just a huge number of clever movetable tricks or is there something else going on?
Incredible
This intro could be subdivided and still would be pretty nice!
this is great, can't wait for final
Awesome!
That guy from Shadrinsk (if I remember correctly) is still active and kick ass. Crunched awesomeness.
Are you NUTS? This is INSANE! Nothing will be the same again.
congratz!
Decent, but long.
Simply amazing!
impossible
4K? omg... that's AWESOME!
so cool and so bored :) 8 mins, omg
Woho!
bloody brilliant!
Never thought something like that is possible on ZX! Kudos =)
good but too long
Well deserved winner
Amazing how you managed to squeeze all of this into 4k (with virtually no repetitions). I guess those lo-fi aesthetics would probably work very well as the backdrop for a chiptune concert, too.
holy shit. this is absolutely AMAZING
That's 4kb? No way! Amazing stuff!
Ohoh!!
Totally rocks.
Amazing to see a sooo long 4k... with this final sample :)
Cute with these colors at the end!

Love it
Agree with the commentators arguing for brevity, but magical coding for a 4k!
Holy fucking shit!
Awesome! (also: it never ends... just like brexit :)
woOw
Spectacular! At first I suspected some one trick pony with very clever parametrization. By the end with so much variety presented, I was more "that's a giant herd of ponies and unicorns".
Some effects are really hypnotic, interesting and fresh, regardless of size and platform. I mean, some full-blown demos on more powerful machines would benefit having such kind of visuals!
I also love the soundtrack, perfectly fitting and emphasizing the awesomeness.
Revision's orgas may have found my jaw while cleaning.
Also, what HellMood said.

cool
So much content and cool music <3
Excellent music and lots of content. However, I would have liked a shorter show as in the long run the effects are getting repetitive to watch.
As a programmer I'm completely mind blown
Awesome!
We joked at the party that there would be a part 2 - but not because we were impressed but because it was about 3 times as long as it should've. You have to respect the technical feat, but this is also mindbogglingly boring.

My bet would be a mix on the two; kinda like the classic palette-rotation animations, except rotating blocks/block types instead of colours, with each animation lookup table being precalculated as the previous is rendering (since it's just a lookup it doesn't seem to require a lot of CPU so there's plenty left in the tank to spend some time calculating the next screen, no matter how crazy the math is)
Had to download and run it to be sure that it's not secretly "just" streaming a video from the internet.
Amazing!
Amazing!
Felt a bit short, but the content that was there was damn awesome
very cool for 4k... drags on forever, but then, woah... colors!
secondary thumb for the excellent soundtrack 👍
Should have been ranked higher. Also, we can see you cut your teeth in 2014!
holy smokes, what a feat.
Fucking crazy Speccy 4k with awesome music just saw it for the first time
shut up and take my heart
woah
Unbeatable in this category!
jawdropper and first contender for the prod of the year!
Great!!!
This is absolute insanity! Soo many scenes, the second part, the speech synthesis - all in 4k! Totally blew me away at the party!
Great packing is great!
It just got crazier and crazier!
Awesome amount of content, but because it's all so slow and chunky, it's not really enjoyable to watch. I remember thinking of the exact same concept for C64 after seeing artefacts and I'm glad I didn't go for it.
The hype sort of missed me on this one. I get it's a 4k and all, but looping—seemingly random albeit stylistically consistent—LUTs for minutes on end is hardly entertaining or stimulating for me. The vocal bits at the end certainly flatten any moodiness preceding it. As far as the technical feat goes I'm obviously a layperson at judging it but it certainly doesn't feel outside the realm of thinkable to me.
It's kinda cool but I guess I just don't know hot to feel about it beyond that.

100th thumb from me
dope and sick in amount of mem!

great
nice
Deserved winner of the PC 4k Compo ... ehm, oh wait...
russian style, Montage, sincere art. technically speaking, there's tearing. music is good. haunting doesn't render in chiptune.
Very Superb Coolest So Long 4k intro! Its looking like a full demo I think!
